Hearthstone?
The Blind Eternities forum

So, I'm in a bit of a Magic slump right now. Spoiler season usually ends up with me theory crafting, but so far I'm underwhelmed. As such I'm trying to fill in some hobby time.
So, before you set me on fire for heresy, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for someone who may be interested in getting into Hearthstone.
My advice is do it. It's fun. Gets grindy if you want to get all the cards but if you like most of the tavern brawls like I do then you'll get enjoyment out of it.

I play hearthstone. ALOT. We can play if you want. I absolutely love it.

DrFunk27 I look into installing it given the positive responses.
My question remains: Is the any good advice for someone just getting into it?

Accomplish every mission each day if you can. Over a week you should have enough to buy a couple packs. I'd read up on the meta. If you decide it's something you like, pay $20 and get packs to boost your library. New players have to overcome the hurdle of a small pool of cards but it's so worth it to get into.

Adventures are really important. They cost a ton of gold, or about 20 dollars, so you'll probably end up having to pay money for them, but the cards that are exclusive are usually important in a lot of good decks.
Once you get a handle on the game, I would start taking a crack at the Arena. The Arena is the closest thing to limited that hearthstone has. Depending on how well you do determines your prizes. Once you get good, you can chain arena runs so that you just keep building on your collection without spending money or a ton of grinding for only one pack a day. I would definitely look into some Arena streams, as those have helped me immensely. I've watched a good bit of Adwcta on YouTube and sometimes twitch, and he and a fellow streamer share an account. When they do co-op runs, the amount of information you glean from the discussions they have is overwhelming.
Last, don't expect to be good. Playing magic certainly gives you an upper hand over someone new who hasn't played another TCG, but it will only get you so far. Just be patient, and willing to learn because there is a learning curve.

I suggest getting into Arena as that will give you a fair chance since you don't have to depend on cards you own. With your magic knowledge I think you can "draft" a good deck right away, and build your collection this way.
Of course do the missions and tavern brawls too since those are the easiest ways to get gold/packs.
I would advise against adventures to start because they are very expensive and even though they provide unique and good cards, I think there's more to gain quicker via regular packs.

You do know T/O has a whole separate forum, dedicated to hearthstone:

Boza I did not. Thanks for the link.
Souljacker thanks for the advice. Too bad I'm the worst drafter you can possibly imagine. Must be my dislike of the format.

Drafting in hearthstone is a lot easier though, as you only have to pick from 3 cards each time and those 3 cards are random (so not dependant on other drafters). Also your curve is displayed and updated as you draft, so that's easy to keep track off too.

I forgot but yes, the adventures are a must purchase for stone players.

Eh... I'll purchase them when and if I feel the desire to invest further into the game. But I've installed it and am currently messing around with the AI.

I'll tell you now, the Arena is not easy. There's a difference between capping out at 5 wins and actually averaging 7 and being able to max some out at 12. 7 is what you need to average to get your pack and enough gold to pay for another arena run. You need 3.5 wins average to just break even. If you want easy wins, wait until the next expansion/adventure is released so the Arena meta gets shaken up, as consistent Arena players have this one figured out. The Arena is the most economical way to get packs once you have enough experience, but it will only frustrate you if you can't do well. I quit the game for about 6 months because of my struggle at the Arena that I didn't think I should be having. As a new player, just buy the packs. I would invest in classic packs, as they'll never rotate out of standard

Unforgivn_II Thanks for the advice. I've built up some basic decks and am just playing for the fun of it right now. Definitely a change of pace from Magic, but I'm finding some basic skills are applicable. Definitely a nice change of pace. I am a little despondent that there's no chat feature, I often enjoy banter with my opponents.

That's why you spam the emote from your character. :D Easy way to troll.

Yeah, I'm glad there's no chat. A lot of times I find myself using the whole turn to make the correct play, and I don't need people telling me that I need to hurry up. The hardest thing to get used to is the hero power. It's always mana inefficient, but sometimes it's the better tempo play than just dropping a bloodfen raptor or a river crocolisk. That's going to be the most important thing, knowing how your decks function (not the cards, but the deck overall) and using the hero power accordingly

Unforgivn_II Yeah, it takes some getting used to. I've mostly been using a Mage thus far, but I'm going to play around with different classes soon.

Don't bother, Mage is best.
Haha that's a joke. They're all fairly balanced in ranked play, even though I do prefer Mage. Priest is probably the weakest there, but it can still hold its own. Mage is far and away the best class in the Arena though. The hero power + the possibility of getting a Flamestrike is just too much value

Kala I'm not very great myself. Can't seem to get above Rank 18.

I'm pretty big into hearthstone, and to boot I'm one of those Free-to-play nubs who has built up a collection over time. I normally tell people who don't want to invest a lot of time into the game that they only need to play every 3rd day since you can only have 3 quests at a time. If I had to do it all over again, I'd start out by getting good at arena. Even if you only get 3-4 wins, you're breaking even and you'll always get a pack out of the deal. I essentially look at it as I'm paying 100 for a pack like normal, then 50 gold to try for a chance to make a lot more. I've yet to get 12 wins, but getting 11 wins sure feels great nonetheless and gives you plenty of rewards! There are sites around the web that offer 'tier lists' for the cards available in each class to give you a general idea for which cards are typically better in arena (basically your 2-for-1s and other handy tips).

GeminiSpartanX do you have any info on the Wild Metagame? Try as I might, I've yet to find any information on a solid ranking system. I ask, because I built out a Tempo Mage list for Wild, simply because the remaining few pieces I needed were mostly commons.

CanadianShinobi- From what I can tell there are a number of generally good decks considered higher-tier, but no clear front-runner for the title of 'best deck'. The nut draws for any of them can beat poor draws for many of the others. I run a tempo mage deck as well, and consistently get to rank 10+ every season with it, without spending much time on the game in general. Someone who really knows the meta can do well with it for sure.

I know nothing of the game, but watch Brian Kibler. I hear he's good and does regular Hearthstone streams.
