Which card do you most appreciate for each of the above reasons?

  • What's your favourite Johnny card? One that makes you feel creative and value interactions and originality.

  • What's your favourite Spike card? One that is the most ruthless and adept at being competitive and winning games.

  • What's your favourite Timmy card? One that's large and impressive.

  • What's your favourite Vorthos card? One that has great artwork and flavour, makes your imagination run wild.

Mine are probably

  • Reveillark : because it can do amazing things depending on how you use it, and how you stack triggers.

  • Phyrexian Arena or Abrupt Decay : both of these cards single handedly win games. They don't take any prisoners.

  • Wurmcoil Engine : it's a massive creature that even does something when it dies.

  • Vizzerdrix : that art, that flavour-text. Pretty great.

Johnny: Norin the Wary , Varchild's War-Riders . They are pretty bad. They win games in the right deck.

Spike: Necropotence , Phyrexian Arena and co. Captain Card Advantage says hello.

Timmy: Worldspine Wurm , Craterhoof Behemoth , Inkwell Leviathan , Terastodon , all the Eldrazi...

Vorthos: Lignify . I mean, look at that card! It's pure gold...

Johnny: Gifts Ungiven Dem piles hurt your opponents head

Spike: Gifts Ungiven Dem enablers for powerhouse plays. I mean the reserved list in vintage is for special cards.

Timmy: Gifts Ungiven What's better than my favorite fatty? Casting it turn 4 off an Unburial Rites , or that Tendrils of Agony for 86.

Vorthos: Gifts Ungiven I mean, it's a pretty lady in a bed with some toys....

Treasure Hunt , it just feels so exploitable some how.
Sensei's Divining Top , it works in any deck pretty much and is incredibly powerful. Fix all your draw steps!
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , who doesn't love the big flying noodle head?
Polymorph because it's too damn funny.

Johnny: Diamond Valley . So much can be done with sacrifice. And hey, it even gives you a little tip!

Spike: Yosei, the Morning Star or Mana Drain . Both of them leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

Timmy: Craterhoof Behemoth . It makes all my non-fatties fatties.

Vorthos: Essence Warden , what a beautiful card.

I wanted to post Necropotence four times, but now it wouldn't be funny...

  • Trading Post - Johnny. I love this card and all it's wacky shenanigans so much. Especially in artifact decks and in combination with untappers, like Voltaic Key or Clock of Omens .

  • Cruel Ultimatum (Alara version) - I nominate this for Spike, Timmy and Vorthos.

If you think nothing could ever be better than drawing 4-5 cards with Sphinx's Revelation , you need to play Cruel Ultimatum. The card single handedly turns the game into a farce. You'd have to be unbelievably far behind to lose after resolving this.

But the card also intrigues me from another perspective.

"Location: Grixis, inside a towering necropolis, in a huge room made of blackened skulls and bones of all kinds

Action: Show something no one would expect to see: a great, winged demon lord . . . cowering in a corner. Maybe's he's even clutching a gut wound that oozes black blood. On the walls around the cowering demon we see the huge shadow of a figure whose shape is distorted by the skulls and bones of the room's walls. The shadow reaches an outstretched, clawlike hand toward the demon.

Mood: A creature of supreme evil dominance, brought low and terrified.

Notes: The shadow should suggest some kind of enormous humanoid dragon or dragon/demon hybrid. It's meant to be a very subtle clue/teaser for a character that players won't see until later."

That was the art description and I think Ralph Horsely pulled it of fantastically. The artwork perfectly represents your opponent after you've cast this.

Johnny: Would have to be Ad Nauseam it's a powerful card and storm is one of my favorite combo decks.

Spike: Deathrite Shaman hands down. I'm a big fan of planeswalkers because they generate so much value and are just plain cool and what's better than a 1 mana planeswalker b/c that is what Deathrite Shaman basically is.

Timmy: This one is more difficult because I'm not much of a Timmy but cards that I would include would be Wurmcoil Engine , Primeval Titan , and idk does Elspeth, Sun's Champion count as a fattie I mean she puts out a lot of damage.

Vorthos: Any planeswalker (did I mention I like planeswalkers).

Johnny: Birthing Pod . This card leads to really interesting deckbuilding decisions, and lets you do crazy things with ETB/LTB effects and let each game be very interesting.

Spike: Thoughtseize . I won't cop out and pick a Power 9 or something like that, and this card sees play in every format and makes games play out completely differently than they would normally.

Timmy: Progenitus . Most impressive because of its mana cost and having protection from all the things. I mean, look at the card.

Vorthos: Maze's End . Any of the cards that directly connect to the storyline of their block (Avacyn, Angel of Hope , Eldrazi, Deicide , etc.) would be great choices, but I think that this card has the most flashy effect on gameplay while still being a gold-standard card in terms of flavor.

Johnny: Zedruu the Greathearted because WTF ARE YOU GONNA DO TO ME??? Also it helps you explore the card pool and makes you a more knowledgeable magic player to build around him.

Spike: Dark Confidant nothing feels better than untapping with this guy, unless you're at less life than the highest CMC in your deck, but even then it's kind of fun, like playing Russian Roulette =P

Timmy: Enter the Infinite I JUST DREW MY DECK THEREFORE I WIN

Vorthos (wherever the heck that came from): The combination of Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Griselbrand . Read their flavor text together, and you'll understand why. Close second, Angel of Serenity

Johnny: Grapeshot ....What?

Spike: Courser of Kruphix . The amount of value makes me ill.

Timmy: Kalonian Hydra . It has the word "doubles" in its rules text!

Vorthos: Any Theros god. So. Much. FLAVOR!

@TexasDice, do you like my way of sneaking around putting 4 Necropotence ?

August 7, 2014 11:26 p.m.

Johnny - Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage

Spike - Deathrite Shaman and Abrupt Decay

Timmy - Emrakul, the Aeons Torn followed closely by Primeval Titan

Vorthos - anything by Richard Kane Ferguson. Notably Dakkon Blackblade , Arcane Denial , and Price of Progress . The original, The Dark printings of Blood Moon and Maze of Ith art is also fantastic, whomever did those.

Johnny: Darksteel Reactor . Anything that says "you win the game", basically. Feels so good.

Spike: Definitely not a demographic I'm in. However, back when my Talrand EDH ran Capsize , I did get a joy in playing the darn thing 3-4 times in a turn, bouncing all of the things. So probably that.

Timmy: Worldspine Wurm . It's a dude! That's big! That makes other big dudes when it dies! And it keeps coming back!

Vorthos: Hmmm. Hot Soup . It's SOUP.

One problem, black doesn't have any miracles! That being said, whenever I draw Tendrils of Agony , it is quite a miracle that it happened.
