I argue Hip Hop is both and .
: These colors suit the golden age of hip-hop, where there was a strong emphasis on storytelling and technical wordplay ala Slick Rick, and Eric B & Rakim respectively. is suitable here because while these songs were praised for their innovations of the spoken word, alot of their content reflected a lifestyle that focused on acquiring and living a life of excess. "Metal"? Not necessarily, but the selfishness and single minded focus on taking what you want definitely earns the .
: These colors suit the 90's era of Hip Hop, better known for it's "Gangsta Rap" and East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry personified in Biggie Smalls and "2pac" Shakur. Both of these individuals demonstrated a technical prowess in their songs, but had a very "Live by the sword, Die by the sword" mentality. Especially 2pac, as he read alot of Niccol Machiavelli who was an accomplished Renaissance Italian Politician. Politicians are often characterized as "Machiavellian", as they were depicted as highly unscrupulous in Machiavelli's book The Prince.

One edit to my previous post. 90's era hip hop, and to a degree a subset of hip hop today is . There's a bigger emphasis on selfishness, and that single minded pursuit of acquiring "things" (women included), additionally, there has been more of a focus on the objectification of women as well. Then you have the influence of drugs, and the selling of drugs and the crime and stories that come after it. Some of the artists that personify these colors best are: Any of the "mumble" rappers like anyone with 'lil in their name, Wiz Kalifa, and Gucci Mane. There are more technical rappers, but they're more of a , and they would be Dr. Dre, Eminem, The Wu-Tang Clan (if not, most of - especally Old Dirty Bastard).

, especially enchantments or life gain, is kind of a soft classical--lots of piano and strings. Think Moonlight Sonata or Pastoral.

This is a fun thread...I actually have a designated Tool song for each individual color, which are:
= Vicarious
= Parabola
= Eulogy
= The Grudge
= Right In Two
I could probably go on for nearly every color combo, as Tool is definitely my go-to for Magic.

Whenever I think of 90s rap I think of Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy, and Arrested Development

@ Argy, honestly i've never heard of Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy until now. The closest thing I listened to was probably Black Sheep (that song "The Choice is Yours" is still AMAZING!). I think that brand of hip hop was classified as more Political Hip-Hop, almost something akin to Spoken Word. What colors would you classify them? They're more doom and gloom - "Television is the new drug of our nation" rather than the Money, Cash, and the objectification of women.

Yeah I agree with that. Arrested Development is kind along the lines of A Tribe Called Quest.
I would call it political/social hip hop.
When I think of 90's rap scene, I think of Dre, DMX, 2Pac, Mobb Deep

"I &think that brand of hip hop was classified as more Political Hip-Hop"
No, it wasn't. I was there.
It was just good hip hop.
The line is "television, the drug of the nation".
As much as I dislike the colour , I think Disoosable Heroes of Hiphopricy would be .
Driving, dark hip hop, with a conscience.
Arrested Development would be . A little more fun, and sunshine, but still with a worldly message.
