Okay, for esper tempo in standard, which one of the following follows these criteria best? It must:

  • A. Block (or kill) Siege Rhinos.
  • B. Be able to cast with 22 or 21 lands.
  • C. Be flying.
  • D. Have protection.
  • E. Block (or kill) Stormbreath Dragons.
  • F. Give me some other form of advantage.

Here is the list of cards that I'm thinking of using.

Femme_Fatale: Comet Storm? As per criteria B) 22 mana should make it lethal.

Doomwake Giant gives you blocks for days. And on top of that it wrecks your opponent's weenies, allowing yours to swing through. That or Silumgar, the Drifting Death. Slower damage throughput, but flying is nice. Not to mention that hexproof. Those are my votes (other than Comet Storm of course).

So I lowered them down to these ones. Now I also have room to sideboard in one of these as a two of along with mainboarding one as a 2 of. So essentially, choose two of the following:

  • Dawnbringer Charioteers Pros: 4 mana, easy to cast and protect. Synergizes well with my deck because of heroic. Flying helps to defend against opposing fliers. Lifelink helps prevent lifeloss from pain lands, Thoughtseizes and Read the Bones. Having both flying and lifelink means I can ignore the Siege Rhino on the board and swing merrily into their face. Cons: Is white, so weak to Glare of Heresy and Stormbreath Dragon. Requires an investment of other cards to get powerful to prevent the advance of Siege Rhino and Silumgar, the Drifting Death.
  • Doomwake Giant: Pros: is an easy casting cost. The constellation thing means it trumps opposing tokens. At 4/6, it is a nice defender against Siege Rhino and their ilk. Not being white means that Glare of Heresy doesn't hurt me. Cons: Don't really have any other enchantments besides Dictate of Heliod. Not a flier so can't prevent some of the weaknesses this deck has. Can't kill Siege Rhinos.
  • High Sentinels of Arashin: Pros: Buffs my creatures to evade Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow. Can potentially replace Dictate of Heliod (meaning I can run something else as well). Is a flier. It is an excellent late game card as the counters can build up in plentiful numbers. Can easily kill a Siege Rhino. Cons: Is white.
  • Hundred-Handed One: Pros: Easy to cast. Excellent at defending. vigilance allows me to swing happily without fear. Monstrous is pretty easy to activate in terms of cost. Excellent against Sidisi Whip and token decks (when monstrou is activated that is) Can kill Siege Rhinos. Can block fliers. Cons: Is white.
  • Master of the Feast: Pros: Very easy to cast. 5/5 meaning it can kill Siege Rhinos. Deals a very hefty amount of damage very quickly. Can protect it easily. Kills Stormbreath Dragons. Cons: Opponent draws cards. Against certain decks this is more of an issue than others (more of an issue against control than against abzan or sidisi whip).
  • Ob Nixilis, Unshackled: Pros: Trample gets through opposing fliers. Is a flier. Slaughters fetches (and in turn, Dig Through Time). The buff can happen really quickly when they are killing my creatures. Makes them think twice about using removal, especially Drown in Sorrow and Bile Blight. Synergizes very well with my ability to remove creatures. Kills Stormbreath Dragons. Cons: Hefty casting cost. Needs a conditional of other cards to block Siege Rhinos and Silumgar, the Drifting Deaths.
  • Scuttling Doom Engine: Pros: Doesn't care about mana. 6/6 is beastly. 6 damage is beastly. Kills Siege Rhinos. Cons: 6 mana is hefty cost. Doesn't fly.
  • Silumgar, the Drifting Death: Pros: Hexproof. Destroys opposing tokens (and helps get mine through). Can repetitively debuff my opponents' creatures. Is a flier. Can block Siege Rhinos. Can't exile with Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. Cons: Hefty casting cost. Three damage isn't that much, makes it easy for UB control players to exile it.
  • Soul of Innistrad: Pros: Deathtouch makes it hard for opposing silumgar's to block. 6/6 is beastly. Reanimation is a extreme boon to this deck as it has limited number of threats. Can still reanimate even after death. Kills Siege Rhinos and is a pain against opposing planeswalkers. Cons: Hefty casting cost. Reanimation goes against Dig Through Time (alternatively, I can run Jace's Ingenuity, I'm normally casting Dig for 5 mana anyways). Doesn't fly.
  • Soul of Ravnica: Pros: Can draw me cards. 6/6 is beastly. Flying means I don't have to worry about most opposing creatures. Kills Siege Rhinos, blocks Silumgar, the Drifting Deaths and kills Stormbreath Dragons. Could potentially replace 1 or 2 of the 6 draw spells I have. Cons: Hefty casting cost. Exile ability goes against Dig Through Time. Abilities are even heftier in cost.
  • Soul of Theros Pros: 6/6 is beastly. Kills Siege Rhinos. Vigilance means I can swing happily without worrying about opposing board states. Lifelink is really powerful, especially when I can give everything vigilance too. Can potentially replace Dictate of Heliod, meaning I can use something else as well. Cons: Is white. Doesn't fly.
  • Torrent Elemental Pros: Cost is relatively cheap. Blocks Siege Rhinos, Silumgar, the Drifting Deaths and Stormbreath Dragons. Works very well with Dig Through Time. Very useful against the exiling effects control uses. The tap opposing creatures abilities synergizes so well with my tokens in being able to hit damage through to my opponents. Can bring out quick deaths. Cons: ETBT clause makes it slow to come into effect when blocking. Doesn't kill any of the threats.

Femme_Fatale - have you tried Dark Betrayal in sideboard for rhino and the like?

February 27, 2015 3:23 a.m.

bigguy99 says... #21

Femme_Fatale I like Soul of Theros, Soul of Innistrad, Doomwake Giant, and Scuttling Doom Engine. They're actually pretty good. There's a reason a lot of the cards you listed aren't used at all. Your reasons for considering them are very hopeful, at best.

February 27, 2015 3:26 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #22

I've just found out about Dark Betrayal after looking at your list again before you suggested it scrotality, so it is in there as a two of along with 2 Glare of Heresy's.

Also, PEOPLE JUST DON'T SHUT UP ABOUT Thragtusk! My fucking god. What part of HE HOLDS NO WORTH TO ME don't they understand? I'm gonna start making the statement that this isn't RTR standard. This is modern. A completely different beast. Thragtusk may have been good in standard but experience has shown that he just isn't good enough in modern. Splinter Twin and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker abuse aside that is. I don't mind that.

Quite a few of those cards listed are used bigguy99. About half are used and half aren't used. But what I've done is go for a bunch of one ofs. I removed 1 Dictate of Heliod, 1 Read the Bones, 1 Monastery Mentor and 2 Brimaz, King of Oreskos (what was originally supposed to go) for 1 Soul of Theros, 1 Soul of Innistrad, 1 Hundred-Handed One and 2 High Sentinels of Arashin. The sideboard got 1 Torrent Elemental and 1 Silumgar, the Drifting Death.

Holy balls Femme calm down.

I think I'd add in Hundred-Handed One. It's got the fewest cons, and although it can't block Stormbreath, it blocks almost everything else 4daze.

February 27, 2015 7:37 a.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #25

Have you even tested Thragtusk???

February 27, 2015 7:44 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #26

Um, Femme_Fatale I just have to point out that Thragtusk trades SUPER well with all 10 of Abzan's Goyfs.

"You have a 4/5? Neat, I have a 5/3 and if it dies I get a 3/3 that can still block you."

In reality, Thragtusk IS super good when roughly 30% of the meta is Abzan.

February 27, 2015 8:36 a.m.

Caligula says... #27

Yeah... I don't know why you WOULDN'T run Thragtusk in a modern blink deck. It just makes sense.

"so as such I have utterly no idea how a large portion of the top tier modern decks are built." This sentence right here leads me to believe maybe you should listen to the community before lashing out.

You seem to have a grudge I notice against certain spike cards that people recommend, There is a reason they recommend it.

Because it's relevant in modern.

But MEH, If you don't like the card then you don't like it.

Don't get mad when people recommend an honest fit for your deck.

February 27, 2015 9:40 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #28

Though thragtusk does cost more mana than any of the goyf clones and dies to all of them. Also worth pointing out the token he leaves behind can't touch the goyf clones.

February 27, 2015 10:01 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #29

ChiefBell while that's true, Thragtusk can blank an attack step from those goyfs just by entering. That's almost as good as chump blocking one.

February 27, 2015 10:05 a.m.

Caligula says... #30

But blinking a Thragtusk is huge field/life advantage.

If they don't remove it before it starts to blink then the game really starts to run in your favor

February 27, 2015 10:07 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #31

You're effectively playing 5 mana to kill a goyf clone and then chump block one. In a single card that's pretty good value I suppose because Lingering Souls and a killspell would cost you 5 mana I guess......

Still I wouldn't count the token for much but threatening Scooze.

February 27, 2015 10:08 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #32

I just don't see the field advantage against abzan. Almost everything they play can beat those tokens, and can do it for less than 5 mana. I mean they can play Tasigur for less mana than a single blink spell even costs.

February 27, 2015 10:12 a.m.

Caligula says... #33

Which is why blink decks aren't very good at being competitive lol.

It's just too cute of a mechanic to really get online before Abzan stuffs the board with threats.

It's just too janky really.

February 27, 2015 10:27 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #34

What do you think of this.

Do I go? It's $350.

February 27, 2015 10:29 a.m.

slovakattack says... #35

Kinda like Exalted. Cute, fun, and...... eeh.

If you really want to do a 'blink' deck, try out Value-Twin? You can still get that feel of a lot of ETBs, but in all likelyhood will be more competitive.

February 27, 2015 10:30 a.m.

@Chief uhhh that looks pretty damn awesome, but idk if it's worth $350.

February 27, 2015 10:31 a.m.

bigguy99 says... #37

Bell, there's too much bad there to be good. I see Bastille as the only good band there.

February 27, 2015 10:31 a.m.

Caligula says... #38

Yeah, I dislike multiple stages, You can't see all the bands you want without missing another.

February 27, 2015 10:42 a.m.

PreZchoICE1 says... #39

ChiefBell well the cool thing is how they've split the different genres up at different stages. To me the lineup isnt THAT amazing but then again Im not a big fan of anyone on the card. For 350 bucks it seems like a good idea with the way they've designed it but Ive heard that british festivals dont afford a lot of room for movement so like Caligula said if you want to ever go from stage to stage that could be a pain in the ass.

February 27, 2015 11:08 a.m.

@ bigguy99 them's fightin words son. Firstly, Bastille is pretty meh in my opinion. But you've got Mumford and Sons, Metallica and Frank Turner, which are all good, even if Metallic is decrepit and old. I'd go just to see Mumford and Sons. I don't know a lot of the other bands though, but avoid the dubstep guy and Simple Plan.

However, I don't think this is worth $350, at least not to me.

I was just curious how old you are cuz my sister is like 13. I don't mind Pierce the Veil they're ok. Were you meaning they're the best in their genre nowadays?

February 27, 2015 11:53 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #47

There is a metric ton of bands with zero talent in that genre who get signed onto these small time labels. They all sound the same : very bad and try hard. Bands like Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens / Alesana know how to perform the music damn near perfectly. Despite popular opinion, post hardcore is a hard genre to do well. It's too easy to sound like every other band out there.

Also, that song you linked reminds me heavily of the 90s. Something my mother would listen to probably. It's not bad.

February 27, 2015 11:58 a.m.

Caligula says... #48

I wouldn't even call Pierce the Veil metal...

Sorry, I'm an elitist when it comes to the genre and that is so filtered down from it, it'd call it hard rock. Honestly.

February 27, 2015 12:06 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #49

Yeh they always do the timetable such that bands do clash and you have to make decisions. Most people pay the $350 on the basis that there'll be around 5 or 6 bands they want to see and they get the whole experience of going to Reading which is one of the largest festivals in the world.

February 27, 2015 12:09 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #50
