Ryotenchi It's really not a debate when you're looking at empirical crap. Only when you get into philosophy can you begin debating.
And I've done effectively no research at all, and am pulling literally everything I'm saying out of a hat. But for someone who gets information from a hat, I must say I've done quite well.

My argument is that morality isn't a leash to be used by others, it's a natural leash to be felt by everyone regardless of the existence of others.
War is always bad. In vivo scientific testing is not always bad.
FAMOUSWATERMELON - some diseases multiply slowly, some quickly. Another factor many people forget is that certain diseases are killed off by the weather (microbes are very susceptible to the cold - hence the invention of the fridge). This means that they can die out without us ever getting involved. Some on the other hand are extremely quick to mutate and resistant - they are not slow at all. After WW1 more people died to Spanish Flu in ONE YEAR than every casualty of the war combined. My argument is that the ONLY reason we survive as a species is because we do not quarantine and forget about people, we actively fight disease. This is not relevant for the vast majority but in cases of like say.... TB or Polio or Flu it's extremely important we fight back. Also worth noting that we're all still VERY susceptible to certain things but because we've actively fought them they don't exist anymore. Polio has almost disappeared from the face of the Earth. Why? Not because we ignored it, but because we actively immunised everyone, including those who had it.
March 31, 2015 7:54 a.m.
(you can't quarantine air-borne diseases such as flu - that's why it's particularly scary).

That was a really disappointing response. Nobody going to play devil's advocate? Talk about being set in one's ways.
Come on, someone justify it.

I woke up to a philosophical discussion about morality. Interesting. Since I'm not big on philosophy and I haven't had my morning tea, I'd rather not get into this a whole lot. And I would agree that morality isn't a societal leash as you seem to have argued JexInfinite. However, I disagree with ChiefBell that there is such a thing as purely objective morality. All morals are subjective to a certain degree. And I find the fact that you simply broke people down into a bunch of biological parts, ChiefBell mildly disturbing as I truly believe that humans are more than the sum of their parts. And yes, before it's said I know that's just a personal thing.
I think what I take issue with is your sense of "logic over emotion" JexInfinite. Well, more so your Individualism. I would consider myself to be an empathetic person, indeed I would consider myself to be very empathetic towards people. I have very little understanding towards those who claim they don't see the value of emotions. I understand them even less if they believe that emotions are some sort of hindrance and that only those they are emotionally connected to matter. I suppose I don't really have an argument here, just getting things off my chest.
However, some food for thought, just because I recognize my capacity to care and that I often place everyone's needs before my own, I still wouldn't consider myself to be a good person. But that is also tied up with my depression, anxiety and a host of other insecurities. Heh, what a way to start off my day.

CanadianShinobi To accurately determine what a human is, we must first discover what consciousness is. What actually is consciousness? Rene Descartes tells us that if we think, we exist. "I think, therefore I am."
We have established that we exist, but we are no closer to discovering what consciousness is, and why it exists.
Emotions attempt to cloud over logic, and make people believe things that can be really illogical, and counter productive.
The over-arching theme to the morality discussion is subjectivity. There is no such thing as true objectivity when it comes to this. We are humans, and therefore will have bias. Because of this bias, we are unable to interrogate ourselves about ourselves, which is what we must do to become objective. However, to become truly objective, you must let go of everything, essentially erasing your existence and becoming a presence that observes. It's not possible to do that, though.
I think it was Heidegger that said that there were two paths we can take. The path of faith, or the path without faith, which does not achieve objectivity.
It's probably clear to everyone why I'm a bad person by now. I place myself above others for the reasoning that I think a certain way, and therefore understand better. As a human, I have been classed as a failure. But this worries me not, for opinions matter not in the quest for true knowledge.

Chief yes, diseases are much more prominent and deadlier than war has ever been. However, notice the use of the past tense. If we were to have a full out war now, modern weapons would ensure that humanity would be dealt a serious, perhaps deadly, blow. Also, quarantine is not a cure, simply a way of buying time while science progresses. And it does work. Without serious quarantine measures in Africa, we would all have Ebola right now.
March 31, 2015 9:50 a.m.
I actually like the 50 over the 20. Much easier to find what page I left off on. In other news, my only class of today was cancelled, so that made my day.
March 31, 2015 9:57 a.m.
FAMOUSWATERMELON - Ebola is fluid borne. That's why quarantine worked to some extent - it was never going to spread quickly anyway. Also by all measures quarantine actually failed given that it spread throughout the continent - the only reason nothing happened was because ebola isn't very ecologically designed. So there are two sides to this. The first is that our human intentions of quarantine were inadequate, but the second is that ebola was never going to be ridiculously bad anyway because it's not an airborne pathogen.
Ebola kills people too quickly, making transmission difficult. The most dangerous diseases keep you walking and feeling good for a while so you can spread it to all of your friends without realising. Ebola kills people too fast. That's actually a a good thing in this case. Flu for example is more nasty because the symptoms take ages to develop - but you can still give it to others. It also spreads in the air, not through blood and sweat. You can sit next to someone with ebola and not catch it. With flu you'd be screwed in that situation.
Trust me, Africa failed to contain ebola but it was never going to spread to the western world anyway.
Pathology is really, really interesting but trusting Fox News' opinion on it isn't a good idea.

I'm playing so badly in the league. I feel really down about it.
March 31, 2015 9:59 a.m.
Hey, just remind yourself that you weren't the one that inquisitioned a Loxodon Smiter. Pretty sure I qualify for guaranteed worst play of the whole league right there.
March 31, 2015 10:06 a.m.
I've lost to inquisition twice. One when you removed by Anger of Gods. And in another game when someone got my shattering spree.
March 31, 2015 10:10 a.m.
That doesn't necessarily mean you were playing badly though. It just means that your opponent took out a key part of your strategy.

March 31, 2015 10:19 a.m.
Yep. Just don't let it get to you, you know? I've made mistakes in the past that I've kicked myself over, but you learn from them and move on. And for this tournament, I'd say just have fun no matter how well or badly you're doing. You've got nothing to prove; we all know you're a good deckbuilder and know about the modern format. Your success, or lack of it, in this tournament doesn't affect that.
March 31, 2015 10:22 a.m.
You're still an awesome player, ChiefBell, better than most. Couple of games with jank decks don't sway that.
March 31, 2015 10:22 a.m.
Maybe. I still feel irritated at myself. Perhaps it's a hint of perfectionism.

During the first two games, I felt really bad for my deck. I mean, I thought it was strong, etc since I worked really hard on it. But U/W control might be too much for it...

Speaking of the tournament I should work on getting some games in today...

You openly express an opinion that I, and many others, deem as incorrect.
In my days of dealing with children, you don't ask for them to fix their obviously wrong behavior, you tell them to. Otherwise, they're going to say no, and continue doing what they were doing.
I'm not trying to say that you're a 5 year old child, but posting what you did incited a reaction from me as though you were. My bad for trying to keep some peace.
March 31, 2015 1:36 p.m.
Ok but you have to realise that this isn't your website so it's not up to you. Whilst you might prefer that, it's not going to happen. You have the right to post whatever you want, but we retain the right to "ask" you to leave if needs be, or to discontinue posting.
We run this community to be as free from direct personal attacks as possible. That's just what we do. When someone such as myself or Epoch reminds you to not do something then by all means you can choose to ignore it, but you should remember where the balance of power lies. When you post here you need to imagine that you're a visitor in Yeago's house; sure you CAN do whatever you want but what you'd normally do is listen to the host's wishes. That's just common courtesy.

FAMOUSWATERMELON says... #1
Chief, actually, I have to disagree with the "virus/bacteria killing us all" part. Sickness has been around for the, what, 2 million years that humanity has, and yet we're still here. Think of it as a race. While virus and bacteria evolve to kill us, we also learn to fight it better, become resilient, and find cures. Many sicknesses that have ravaged us in the last 200 years would have annihilated us 3000 years ago. It's also worth noting that sickness is slow. Take the example of cancer. It's (so far) incurable, but it takes years, sometimes decades to kill people. And we simply reproduce faster than that. The number of people that die to cancer in, say, ten years is nothing compared to the number of people born in those same ten years. While sickness has and always will make many victims, it won't kill humanity. Leave that to global warming and atomic bombs. They get the job done quicker.
