When Sorin, Ugin, and the lithomancer were trying to trap the Eldrazi, Nicol Bolas, who wanted to use the eldrazi as slaves after his recent victory in the elder dragon wars, tried to stop them. He was unable to stop the eldrazi being trapped by Ugin, he was able to stop Sorin from killing the eldrazi. Then as Bolas tried to free the eldrazi from captivity, Eramakul, who didn't want to be a slave of bolas, lent his power to the lithomancer (Eramakul was once a 50/50), and the lithomancer used the power to first look into Sorin's mind, then curse Bolas so that he could never free the eldrazi (he learned the curse from Sorin's mind, and improved it with his new eldrazi power). Bolas was outraged and tried to remove the lithomancer's spark. However, using his power as a lithomancer, he made a hedron golem, possessed it using eldrazi power and knowledge he gleaned from Sorin, then, as the other hedrons absorbed the power of the eldrazi, his golem, and through his golem, himself, absorbed the spell casted by bolas and all of the UBR mana that the spell was made of. In extreme pain, he inadvertently planeswalked for the last time before his spark was removed.

As he was dependent on his pre-mending spark to sustain his immortality, he would have died had he not absorbed the power of the old 50/50 eramakul and the mana of bolas's spell. Pushed to his physical limits, the lithomancer passed out on the ice of dominaria's north pole. Because he was radiating mana, the ice melted and he fell to the bottom. Unconsiously, his body changed into something more than eldrazi, warped as it was from absorbing Bolas's magic. As he dreamed his identity changed to Marit lage, and he continued dreaming until he felt Bolas's presence making himself king of Madra. He rose from the ice and attacked. The fight between them was brutal. Finally,Tetsuo umezawa snuck up from behind and slew Bolas. Then, they fought for dominance in a fight that ravished the entire land before Marit finally forced umezawa to retreat back to Kamigawa. However, before he could assert his dominance, a kjorian priest banished him back underneath the domiarian north pole. Both the fight and the banishment took a toll on Lage, and as much of his power was spent, he shrunk down to a 20/20.

Sorin knows that while Eramakul is a 15/15 now that much of his energy given to Marit, he will soon grow back to his original size. Sorin needs to find a being who could defeat eramakul before he becomes a 50/50 again. After encountering Aishok, he learns from him that Aishok was recently feeding off of the dreams of a 20/20 dominarian monstrosity. Sorin tells Aishok to guide him to Lage, and to distract the kjorian priest's with a never ending nightmare while he finds Marit, and restrains him until Aishok returns and communicates through his nightmares who he once was. The hard would just be restraining Marit Lage

Like you have a better explanation for Marit Lage, JakeHarlow and ifired

Seeing as we don't know much about Lage, nobody can come up with a "good" explanation. You did mess up Lage's gender, though. She was a sorceress with a kraken-like physical form. She was capable of planar travel, but was not a Planeswalker.

"Little is known about her life, her fate, or what exactly she was; all that is known is that she and her followers did a lot of damage to Dominaria, and her defeat left her frozen in an icy prison beneath the sea."

Source. That's it. That's what we know. I would be astonished if we were to discover Lage to actually be a transgender lithomancer of Zendikar fame. But hey, even though your interesting narrative is based on virtually no evidence, you could be right.

I just doubt it.

Uhhhh I guess it was an interesting read but it would be cool if you had a disclaimer saying this wasn't real lore.

Yeah I got all the way to using P/T as an indicator of power before I got skeptical that this wasn't canon and then got about halfway into the second paragraph before i was sure. This is a cool story bro, but a disclaimer would be nice that this isn't canon.

Moved to BE. Please use the Lore forum only for canonical discussions of lore and "what if" scenarios (which are still based on canon anyway). Fanfics are lore-based, but they not canonical.

It was an interesting read and the premise was quite amusing. I'm sorry if I seemed overly harsh. Creativity is cool.

August 4, 2014 11:13 a.m.

JakeHarlow Ok, didn't know Marit was female. As for the matter of she being a planeswalker, her spark was removed by nicol bolas in my fanfic.

August 5, 2014 8:27 a.m.

Epochalyptik, how do you know that this isn't cannon and that I'm not just a member of the creative team whose posting what's about to happen in the lore on this site, without anybody knowing it's real until it's finally officially canon?

August 5, 2014 8:32 a.m.

No, I've said too much!

So many fanfic author stereotypes being confirmed in this thread.

julianjmoss I read her wiki before I created this thread, I just accidentally forgot about her being female. Other than that, there are no contradictions.

"Marit Lage was a powerful sorceress who had a kraken-like figure and existed during the Ice Age (all true in my fanfic except for gender, unless maybe the lithomancer changed into a female from bolas's spell or later from eramakul's energy). Although she was not a planeswalker, Marit Lage was able to travel to and from planes and possessed other characteristics of planeswalkers (in my fanfic, Bolas removes his spark. She is still able to travel between planes because after eramakul gave her his energy, she turned into something like an eldrazi, but more powerful and not colorless because she also absorbed Bolas's spell that removed her spark). Little is known about her life, her fate, or what exactly she was (until now!); all that is known is that she and her followers did a lot of damage to Dominaria, and her defeat left her frozen in an icy prison beneath the sea (both true)."

BTW, wouldn't this sort of count as a "what if" question, with the what if question being "What if this was how larit mage was created?".

August 5, 2014 8:32 p.m.

It wasn't presented as a "what if" question, so no, it's not a "what if" question.
