Pokemon EX

So...since Red and Blue came out on gameboy I haven't been involved with Pokemon. But now my kid is into them and is getting harassed by his annoying cousin that he doesn't have any EX cards.

What is this? Why should he want them? How does one get some if you do indeed want them?

Thanks in advance.

Some sort of rare more powerful version of a pokemon.

EX pokemon are better versions of pokemon. The game has a huge power creep so decks don't really function without EX pokemon.

You open them in packs like any rares. or you can just buy singles.

In every pack or are they more like our mythics?

One good thing about Pokemon is that there isn't as much price inflation, and the Pokemon company has been very good about reprinting good/in demand cards. Plus the only format of the Pokemon TCG is effectively "Standard" in the sense there isn't an eternal format to drive up prices. So any "good" EX cards won't be absurd amounts of dollars.

E.g. the most expensive EX card from the newest Pokemon expansion is a full art holofoil Lucario EX and it's $25 SP. The Non-full art version is $15 NM.

NOTE: I don't play the Pokemon TCG, but at my old LGS there was quite a large crowd who did so I got some knowledge of the market/meta via osmosis.

Here's my basic knowledge of Pokemon TCG:

  1. My buddy is trying to sell a foil Charizard that is worth ~$50 (not first edition).

  2. Pokemon Energies make fantastic basic lands to freak people out with. They do pretty much the same thing and the symbols are generally close enough that people will get over it very quickly.

I know a bunch about pokemon, so you can ask me anything you need, but if he wants to play competitively, I can't help you. If he doesn't play, buy a few full arts for cheap, because they look cool, and some are cheap.

As far as TCGs go the pokemon TCG is much, much better than most. It's easily the 2nd best TCG in terms of design, balance and fun.

@ NorthernRaven

He's only 8. He's starting to take better care of the cards he has, but they're still occasionally buried in his mess of a room. I'd hate to see what expensive cardboard would get trashed in his room.

Get him sleeves and a deckbox and make him take care of his cards

Legendary Treasures is the best bet for buying packs for him, because they're cheap and he will find EXes
