Just wanted to let you know that Terry Pratchett, the author of the Discworld series has passed away today. He was one of the greatest in his area. Rest in peace.

I've read almost all of his work, the more you read the greater respect you feel for him. Luckily there's still one book that hasn't been released yet. He was one of the few still living authors I was interested in.. Sad this day is :(

@NorthernRaven Terry Pratchett was the author of the Discworld series, one of the best comedy/fantasy series in existence. Although he isn't related to MTG, I would definitely recommend that you read some of his work.

I considered starting the discworld series a few months ago, but it honestly looks like something you needed to have started while growing up. The first couple of books just look kind of silly and like children's books, which really doesn't sound interesting. Maybe the series evolved or got better, i assume it did, but starting midway through a series really kind of aggravates me and the starting books just don't seem interesting.

Well, I looked up the books, and I can actually buy them in my native language. I looked at the cover of the first book, and as kyuuri117 said, it kind of looks like a book for childrens! Is it meant for grown ups?

NorthernRaven I wouldn't say that he aimed towards children when writing the Discworld series. You notice quite fast if you tend to like the books or not. Then reading the series strictly from no.1-40 isn't neccesary. Sure you get some references and jokes better but you can start almost anywhere. I read them completly out of order and it turned out just as great.

Some tips. Read the books in English and do NOT ever WATCH the FILMS.
Also personally I don't actually think the first book is neither the best or the place to start.

"First book is not the place to start"!? So.... Where to start then? :)
And, why should I only read it in english?

I have never really gotten around to reading discworld but I have known for awhile that I should. Many people have sung their praises but reading a 35+ book series is a bit daunting prospect right now.
RIP, we fantasy readers will remember you.
Also What book should I start with? I know that the series isn't written in chronological order but haven't ever gotten a good recommendation for the order.

I would say Equal Rites or Guards!Guards! and maybe Mort would be the best place to start since they introduce The witches, the guards and death in that corresponding order. Also the English-thing is rather very specific since I dislike most books translated into Swedish and jokes is particular difficult to translate correctly.

To quote the man himself: "A man's not dead while his name is still spoken." I never got round to reading many of his books though.

I actually just found this on the front page of imgur, assume it's because the author died.

One of my favourite books is Good Omens which was co-written with Neil Gaiman.

I love his "Going Postal" - a witty satire on the post office and communication in general. I took it home one Thanksgiving an kept sneaking off to read it. My family looked at me like I was nuts 'cuz I couldn't stop laughing. I'd recommend it as a decent starting place for anyone new to Pratchett. It's the introduction of a new character (Moist von Lipvig), and I got on pretty easily, even though I'd never visited the Discworld before.
And Pratchett will definitely be missed. His death is a huge loss for readers everywhere.

I haven't read any of his books, but I respected the guy based on what my friends say about him. He seemed like so much more than Suzanne Collins, or other crap writers.

I haven't read all the Discworld books, but I've read enough to have a deep respect for this man. The world will miss him in his passing.
