TappedOut Debate: Emergency Personnel Safety

The Blind Eternities forum

I'm taking a step back from Magic to discuss a very serious issue: Emergency personnel safety.

A brief backstory Show

Just get to the point?

I want to hear your thoughts on the topic? Here's some topic points for you to get stated with:

  • How could we have prevented this?

  • Is there something we could have done differently?

  • Is there equipment we could have used to keep him safe?

Discuss!

Hold on, I have a few rules:

  1. Be civil. Don't use vulgar language. Don't write something you wouldn't want your mother to see.

  2. It is ok to disagree. Just tell whom in a polite manner.

  3. Explain your thoughts.

Ok, now Discuss!

There is no what ifs here. Crime will always exist. People will always find ways to commit them. There is no perfect solution to any problem.

Also why is this on tappedout?

sirbar, No doubt crime will always exist, but couldn't this have been prevented?

Also, I wanted to see what the community thought.

Crime will always exist. Murder will always exist. If someone comes up to you with a knife and stabs you in the back of the head with no warning could that be prevented? Not really. Nothing in life is guaranteed.

The assumption that you can prevent crime, as an absolute conclusion, is well-intentioned but naive.

Crime will exist. You can, after the fact, think about specific actions that might have prevented a particular crime, but this is misplaced effort in my opinion. It's more productive to consider what is reasonable. Reasonable controls are how you build a secure environment.

Without knowing anything about the gunman or his motives, I can suppose that it's likely that no reasonable actions would have prevented this crime. Intentional murder is difficult to prevent. You can equip police with training, vests, and information, but you can't eliminate shootings. The issue is that a hostile actor who keeps their plans secret will be able to evade what controls exist and avoid provoking the implementation of other controls that might stop them.

Epochalyptik: According to local sources, Jorge was wanted for other crimes and has a long rep sheet.

I suppose the answer that comes closest to what you want, then, is that our society needs to focus on criminal rehabilitation instead of allowing the privatized prison industry to breed repeat offenders.

It's really depressing I didn't even hear about this considering I only live 30 minutes away. God bless him, and prayers sent out to his family.

Regarding the situation of preventing this, I don't particularly think it's possible. Unless we come up with a technology that can prevent people from dying, or make AI do these types of jobs, crime like this will always exist and people will die. It's just sad it happened.

Heavy stuff for a Magic site. I expected a discussion of Angel's Grace.

You can't really do anything besides be educated. Buy a gun, or a knife, or pepper spray, whatever. Learn how to staunch bleeding and other basic trauma care.

For dealing with a police manhunt though? Buy a helmet and stay indoors I guess. It's important to learn how to just deal with inability too.

I work in corrections, Epochalyptik... Yes the privatized prison system has its flaws, that I'll agree to. But at the same time, at a state run prison (like the one I work at) the goal is and always has been first and foremost, rehabilitation of the offender population, with programs that are completed in exchange for time off their sentences, and if they have a violation of policy or law, they risk adding time back onto or extending those sentences.

Not to stoke flames or anything, but I've always believed that private prisons are businesses first (like universities) and their highest concern is to keep making money. Similar to how oil companies start rumors and spread misinformation about renewable energy, what good will your product be if people find out there's an easier solution (in this case, rehabilitation and reintroduction)? Private prisons are built to keep the incarcerated on the inside.

I think the real atrocity is that private prisons are even allowed to exist in the first place. When money is the goal, nothing can change and human decency is the first thing to fly out the window.

As for how this post fits into the discussion, I'd say about as well as this discussion fits on TappedOut.
