Television help

I’m looking for competent input from any users who are knowledgeable about televisions. I’d like to upgrade to a new tv for the launch of the next gen gaming consoles, but don’t know enough to make an informed decision. In addition to research I’ll be doing, I thought it might be a good idea to glean what I can from users on this site.
I’m interested in finding out exactly which Tv is best for the new consoles. I do not care about other uses for the tv, it is strictly for gaming.
From what I’ve researched thus far, it seems at bare minimum I’ll want a set that can display in:
•4K resolution
•Minimum 120Hz refresh rate
•HDMI 2.1 compliant
•Good HDR implementation
Aside from the above, I’m now sure what else I should be looking for. Is OLED a must? Is VRR necessary? Should I wait for 8K? I don’t know.
As a point of reference, it seems the LG CX models are the front runners for the time being. They seem to be the most highly recommended online, but I’d like more input. Thank you to everyone who reads this and shared any insights.
I will be picking up both consoles, so no console wars here. This thread is like Switzerland. No fighting! I only want to hear tv input please.
RiotRunner789 thanks, I appreciate the input! I’m not an audiophile, so Tv speakers have always been good enough for me. I’ll be picking up the Pulse3D headset too, so sound is covered. I was mostly concerned there was some technical specification I was omitting or undervaluing; I’m glad I’m on the right track. Do you think I should worry about 8K? Or will must have games that support that resolution be too few and far between for that to really matter?

In personal experience, I've had good luck with Samsung brand TV's.
My tv is a few years old now but it's held up well. It's 52 inch 4K, 60HZ (hence the age), HDMI 2.1 capable, and it cost like 300$ on sale.
Just don't go for things like Westinghouse and you'll be fine.

@Massacar I’ll keep that in mind. I was leaning toward LG or Samsung or Sony as the potential brand. Since Sony has no HDMI 2.1 ready sets, I wrote them off, so it’s between the other two at the moment. Not sure if Qled or OLED is the way to go.

Ive had ambilight on my TV the last 10 years. Its amazing! Its not just a flashy gimmick that many thinks, it makes the watching really easy on the eyes. If you dont want a Philips TV they have an adapter you connect your HDMIs to so you can get ambilight with HUE lightstrip (new lightstrip made for tv ambilight that can show more colors commin soon)

I wouldn't worry about 8k now, namely for stated reason of lack of support. Even when it does come out the consoles will be a few months behind and the games a few months after that then, you might as well wait for 16k.
If you wait for anything it should be a sale however, nice, large flat screens have gotten incredibly cheap regardless over the last decade.

Generally speaking, LG and Samsung are the top of the consumer market. For overall performance, features, picture quality and pricing.
If picture quality is the most important and you can't decide between displays, aim for a display with Dolbyvision. It is still better than the latest HDR.
Get a smart model if you can as well. The added features dont hurt the display performance and are nice. Especially if there's a wireless connection feature included.
For sound, I think the only true native atmos pass through is on a couple of sony and LG displays. I know you mentioned that is not a big deal but for completeness I thought I would mention that too.
If price is paramount, Samsung is better priced in the market over LG usually. I would feel comfortable with either brand.

Almost forgot about refresh rates, the Sony XBR series and the LG CX series are two of the few model series that have a true native 120hz.
Most other models use software-driven refresh rates which are not quite the same.
Hope this helps, happy hunting!

Thanks to everyone for helping me with this thread. You’ve all cleared up a lot of gaps in my knowledge, and I can safely narrow the field down now.

I'd say you pretty much have it figured out.
The only thing you didn't mention is sound. If you don't have a sound bar/speakers/base then I would recommend getting them because typically the TV speakers don't last as long or pump as much. Then again, if you're using a headset then this point is moot.
Then it's just about getting a deal on TV. I'd stick to name brands, sharp, lg, Sony, etc. Less quality issues that way. If you go to Best Buy, they have a wall of TVs, with spec info, to choose from. Should be simple from there. If you need to order online, newegg, Walmart, Amazon, best buy and target are best. Walmart and amazon are the most likely to have random tv deals outside of black friday. Check daily and grab one on sale if you want to save a little or wait until black friday or cyber Monday to get the best deal.
