The Official Gaming Thread I: TappedOut's First Line of Defence

The Blind Eternities forum

Posted on Aug. 16, 2014, 5:19 a.m. by ChiefBell

(This has been shamelessly borrowed from another forum - many thanks to those guys that came up with this formula, without them this structure wouldn't be possible).

This is the first official gaming thread. I don't know what makes it official..... but I decided I'd try and make ONE thread for everyone's gaming needs. If anyone sees someone posting another thread about games or gaming they could perhaps be pointed to here instead. Console gaming, PC gaming, online gaming. Is it considered video game related? It goes here.

Feel free to ask any gaming related question, there will be many here willing to help you out.

In order to find the thread in the future click on the magnfying glass in the top right (the search icon) and type 'the gaming thread' with any luck (fingers crossed) this should come up.......(this is a bit of an experiment actually)

The Rules of the Gaming Thread, version 1:

1- Stay on topic! This is not the place to discuss TV shows, guitars, homework, kittens or the mother of your neighbour. It's called the Gaming Thread for a reason.

2- No unmarked spoilers! If you're going to post spoilers for a game, please mark them properly and make them discrete.

3- No spam. Spam and disruptive posts will be reported to relevant admins.

4- Please refrain from posts consisting of only "Hello everyone" or "Hi people!" or "goodbye people!". If you want to announce your arrival or leaving, at least make it gaming-related.

5- Avoid posting a lot of pictures. It will help to keep things speedy. Try linking pictures by URL, instead of embedding them into the thread.

6- Respect the opinion of everyone and no flaming!

7- It is forbidden to post any links to copyrighted material, such as torrents, game ROM's or CD keys.

8- If your question is not answered, try again later! If no one can answer it at the moment, chances are there will be someone who is able to help you at another time! Are you stuck on a game and can't progress? Try GameFAQ's, they have FAQ's for most about every game ever made. If you are having hardware issues, Google is always your best bet. Someone else has probably had the same problem as you!

Gaming FAQ

What console should I get?!?!

The best thing you can do is to take a look at existing and upcoming EXCLUSIVE titles for both systems, and see which ones youd like to play more. At the end of the day, youre buying the console for your own enjoyment, and its a lot of money to spend, so spend it on what you want, not what might be perceived as cool!

If you are looking at getting a new console, but dont really know what to expect from each of them, just post in the thread for more in depth thoughts and opinions.

Is Game X Better Than Game Y?

Yes. And No. Depends on who you ask. Every game has its fans and its detractors, so theres no right answer (although if a lot of people are saying Game Y sucks, then the chances are Game X would be a better choice!). Gaming is subjective! One man's trash is another man's treasure!

Do I Need a HDTV To Play My New Console?

No, you certainly dont NEED a HDTV to enjoy your gaming console; they are both compatible with regular TVs. However, if you want to get the most out of the graphical capabilities of your console, you may want to consider investing in a monster telly! It really makes it look a whole lot better! You can also plug your console to a computer screen, if you have one that supports HD resolution, but you need the right cables and the right inputs on your graphics card for it.

Is This The Right Place To Talk About This?

If it has any relevance AT ALL to gaming, gaming platforms, games, gaming hardware, accessories etc, then this is the place to discuss it!

So come on in, youll find us a friendly bunch, eager to help and discuss all aspects of gaming! One word of warning though, if you get sucked in, you may find it hard to escape!

Any thoughts on the format and general idea Epochalyptik? Worth doing / not worth doing?

I thought Femme_Fatale might be interested in this endeavor!

Is it sad that the only question I have is just to ask how big the Pokemon games are outside the US and Japan?

August 16, 2014 6:17 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #5

Well they're massive in Europe. England and France regularly have competitive tournaments and the games sell well over here. Russia is apparently a big market too. In terms of gaming habits Europe is very similar to the US.

I can't answer for South America and Asia.

Did you enjoy x and y? I didn't so much. Black 2 is actually one of my favourites. I have a team of 6 that consists of starmie, scrafty, archeops, metagross, garchomp, ferrothorn.

August 16, 2014 6:27 a.m.

eienkizu says... #7

x and y were okay...the whole mega evolution thing is sort of amusing but i still keep my copy of soul silver around because i loved having my pokemon follow me around the map

August 16, 2014 6:47 a.m.

Thesaman says... #8

I didn't like White and Black 2. Black and White 1 were actually really fun, and so were Diamond, Pearl and Platinum.

Heartgold/Soulsilver were the best games imo, the format Nintendo used was awesome.

August 16, 2014 6:58 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #9

I did enjoy them very much. I was surprised how much I liked Mega Evolution; I honestly didn't think much of it before I started playing, and I played X, which has the "weaker" Mewtwo and Charizard. I also find it very interesting to go inside the head of Lysandre and your rival and try to figure out why they do what they do. I don't care for Xerneas but Yveltal seems awesome. I'm really looking forward to the third game.

I did enjoy the Generation V games, and B2W2 was much better than BW. My friend and I were also really pissed that Hoenn, his favorite region and my first, weren't remade that generation.

Speaking of Hoenn, are you looking forward to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire?

August 16, 2014 6:59 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #10

I'll have to try those. I didn't play them.

August 16, 2014 7 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

I don't know. Didn't play the originals. But I will pick up heartgold

August 16, 2014 7:01 a.m.

Thesaman says... #12

I can't wait for the Hoenn remakes. I just wish they had made a hoenn remake before the new X and Y format came along. At least this will add mega evolutions though.

I'm still hoping for an Emerald remake to go along with Sapphire and Ruby.

ChiefBell, heartgold is probably the best pokemon game :D

August 16, 2014 7:06 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #13

I didn't play ruby or sapphire but I did play gold and silver. I will pick up heartgold when I can. Then I can trade a ho-oh onto my black 2 game. We're ruby and sapphire good?

August 16, 2014 7:07 a.m.

Thesaman says... #14

Yeah, but emerald was the best Hoenn game.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald were all very well done, so if you can get them, do it. The reason everyone wants a remake so much is because when the originals were made they were limited by the constricts of old gaming systems. Now, with consoles like the 3DS to play it on, it would be a lot of fun to experience the game you played and liked(hopefully) in a more modern fashion.

August 16, 2014 7:12 a.m.

I may still have Pokemon Emerald and Sapphire for the SP, with a Jorachi on there. I don't play the card game.

I picked up Chrono Trigger for the DS for around $17 a few years ago, which is awesome considering the SN version is around $100 plus. Square Soft added some features to the original, thus solidifying Chrono Trigger as my favorite console RPG of all time.

August 16, 2014 8:10 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #16

Yeh chromo trigger is supposed to be amazing but I never bought it. Would you recommend the ds version?

One of my favourite games is valkyria chronicles for the ps3. It's like a turn based rpg with guns. Pretty great.

August 16, 2014 8:18 a.m.

Chief, the DS Chrono Trigger is better than the original! They added some cut scenes, extras for the endings, and some side games to obtain never seen before items. Best $17 I ever spent!

Sweet! I have yet to obtain a PS3... Any good RPGs for the original Wii?

August 16, 2014 8:31 a.m.

quesobueno123 says... #18

aeonstoremyliver I loved xenoblade chronicles for original wii. Anyone have Fifa 14 for ps4 and wanna play a game?? I'm tastycheese123 on PSN

ChiefBell says... #19

If we could edit posts I would edit the first post so that it had everyone's Xbox live and play station network names in it. But I can't. Would also add steam names too.

I did ask yeago if we could have post editing as a thing because it would really help a thread like this.

Jak II is still my favorite non-Pokemon game ever. I'm legitly taking my PS2 to college pretty much just to play those games. I'm also really hoping to find the Lost Frontier to play too.

I haven't played Ratchet and Clank yet, but it's on my "games to play" list.

Well ... my choice of games are ...

  • Blaz Blue for the PS3, a fighting game made by the people who made Guilty Gear.
  • TF2 for pc, was probably one of the best and most balanced FPS's out there, until they decided to let user content in and made the Scout the most overpowered class.
  • Gotham City Imposters for PS3 (or pc if I can get more ram for my lappy), really well done, and challenging too. Think of, CoD Black Ops mixed with TF2.
  • Any of the Ratchet and Clank games, they have a remake edition of all of them for the PS3 I believe. These are also probably the only games I've ever actually completed.
  • The World Ends With You for the DS. By far one of the most difficult games you're ever gonna play on the DS.
  • Knights in the Nightmare for the DS, I think this one almost won game of the year.
  • Any of the Professor Layton games or Phoenix Wright games for the DS, generally if you like one, you'll like the other series.
  • Hotel Dusk Room 215: Sort of like Phoenix Wright in that it is a detective visual novel gameplay, but the main character is an ex-cop, and the setting is very Noir like.
  • The Lost Story for the Wii. Do you like Xenoblade Chronicles? Well this has a very similar acting style, it has british voice actors who really know how to act. And the combat is SUPERB. You really feel as if you are in the heat of battle, and teamwork with your AI teammates is essential. You don't feel as if you are the sole person doing all the work, rather, you feel as if you are the leader directing the group.

  • What do I want to start playing? Arche Age, the new mmo that just came out. The alpha package is $50, which I don't mind, I just need more ram.

You know you've been on T/O for too long when you start double square-bracketing everything with a name.

    August 16, 2014 11:24 p.m.

    ChiefBell says... #30

I recently completed assassins creed (the pirates one). That was really fun and we'll doneI've found previous AssCred games a bit full but this had enough character progression elements to keep me hooked.

I also recently completed wolfenstein for ps4. That was one of the best fps' s I've ever played. Fantastic atmosphere and we'll thought through. Honestly I hadn't played a good fps for ages before that Last one was probably like battlefield 3 which ended up being not great.

Me and my girlfriend are playing through Final Fantasy X together because it's cute. Also it's like literally the best rpg of all time. Literally.

I'm currently also playing the last of us but I really don't like it as much as I think I should. Loads of people said it was like the best game ever and so far I'm just finding it fine. It's certainly good - but it's not amazing.

    August 17, 2014 5:22 a.m.

    quesobueno123 says... #31

Femme_Fatale The world ends with you is by far my favorite ds game!

    August 17, 2014 6:41 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #32

Have you played Knights in the Nightmare, quesobueno123? It is really good, the story is superb and the gameplay and execution is very unique. I never got to finish it as I quit it when I hit a really difficult boss, however I would play it numerous times over if I ever decide to get my DS back from my mom. I left every video game related thing with her to prevent distraction at uni. My laptop is all I really need.

    August 17, 2014 6:48 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #35

I have Bastion, I've watched people play Bastion, I loved the style of Bastion, I have the soundtrack of Bastion, I've played the soundtrack of Bastion on Audiosurf ...

But I have not actually played Bastion yet.

A girl's gotta keep her priorities straight, as we speak I have about 9 more cards to fix, and then the ENTIRE M15 set will be done. I swear, this set alone upped me in the cards addition section about 350.

    August 17, 2014 6:50 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #36

I don't really follow releases quesobueno123, I buy games when they become 25%+ on sale on steam. I saved like, some $4,000 on steam purchases because I was able to get massive packs for 75% off and the likes.

    August 17, 2014 6:52 a.m.

    quesobueno123 says... #37

Femme_Fatale It's not even coming out on pc just consoles but I can't wait.

    August 17, 2014 6:56 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #38

Also, I can't even play over half of my games because I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge, that has a intel Core i3.

I can add more ram and that is it. But this little guy is quite the beast for a 7 (or 9?) year old business laptop. I can play Gotham City Imposters on it without it overheating, my only problem is the amount of frames per second I get because of low ram.

    August 18, 2014 6:27 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #43

No consoles here anymore. But my parents have a history of buying consoles the moment they come out, even if they are over priced or have no games yet. The PS4 they have has been used to play, one game, before DOTA took over my mother's boyfriend's life. That is literally all he plays, from dusk till dawn.

    August 18, 2014 9:45 a.m.

    ChiefBell says... #44

Dota is amazing though. I had to stop playing because it just screwed with my life too much. Like I stopped going to lectures and doing revision etc which was bad - so I just gave it up completely.

    August 18, 2014 9:54 a.m.

    ChiefBell says... #45

I was going to ask if the remastered version of the last of us is worth getting if you already have the ps3 version.

    August 18, 2014 10:02 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #46

No idea. I never thought The Last of Us was really worth it. Want a really good story? Go buy a book. Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy is superb in every way, lush with a vivid universe and wonderful character development, and truly, 100% unexpected plot twists and turns.

My thing with games, and one of the main reasons why I really enjoy indie games and rogue-likes, is that it has to be FUN. The gameplay has to be WELL-MADE. Not this shit stuff that most games are following now where visuals and story-line come first, instead of the gameplay. Sure I like a good story or good graphics in games, but they are not important.

I also think advertisement has to do with a lot of it. Games like Resident Evil and CoD get advertised, games like Portal and Ookami, don't.

    August 18, 2014 11:12 a.m.

    Femme_Fatale says... #49

    Actually no.

The number one reason why the best and innovative games don't sell, is because of casual gamers.

A large majority of the world's gamers are casual gamers. People who just buy one or two games to play on occasion. What do these people like? They like the classics. They like the stuff that has been around for years. And when you are a little teenager and your mother buys you your first game, what is she going to get you? She is going to get a game from a franchise that has been around for a long time. For the simple reason that we think that if something has been around for a long time, it must be good. Because good games are successful.

    August 18, 2014 11:20 a.m.

    ChiefBell says... #50

Agreed. Innovation doesn't occur because there are more casual gamers that would rather go for a 'safe' franchise than an adventurous buy. Much like magic players. Wizards make more money designing sets for the young kid whose parents buy them cards than they do off the hardcore magic fans. Its simply because they outnumber us like hundreds to one.

Femme_Fatale - I play games for the complete opposite reason you do. I look for in games, the same thing I do in books - a strong and consistent narrative drive. I emphasise that over actual gameplay. Old Resident Evil games have awful camera work and clunky controls but I like them because the story is great. Similarly I hate Call of Duty because whilst it plays quite nicely, it has absolutely no substance or grounding.

This is probably why I'm a massive fan of rpgs in general because they're more absorbing. Even ones with clunky combat like Oblivion are great because they suck you in - describing a lush world that you can become a part of. In comparison a lot of games now don't bother with that and just make you shoot stuff just cos' lolz.

I enjoyed Wolfenstein for this reason. It's a dumb shooter but the portrayal of Nazi England and Germany is spot on from great pop-culture references to extrapolation based on the kind of research they actually did in real life (super soldiers etc). In this way it gives you a reason WHY you should be shooting things.

    That's why I play anyway.
