Has anyone read the series or parts of it? I've read a bit about it and think the story sounds interesting, but wanted to hear some opinions.
I recently started playing the video game (third, The Witcher 3) and enjoy the story thus far,so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and read up on the story in the first two games and get my eyes away from Excel sheets (summer internship).

In the middle of Blood of Elves for similar reasons you are. Enjoying it thoroughly and will complete the series while playing the game. Definitely recommend.

I just started 3 a couple days ago. I haven't had experiences with the books, but I love 2 and 3. Especially gwent. I like taking money from merchants.

Thanks guys. Of course the local library network has two copies with five people waiting for them already, so I just ordered the first book off of Amazon.
@ Unforgivn_II - I'm so bad at gwent. I've only played twice, first time I didn't realize that you didn't draw more cards after each round.. oops.

Its real simple after your first game. I did the same thing. But then its easy. I was able to get my Siege master Foltest really quick, so now I win probably 80 percent of my games. Just apply your MTG skills. Obviously its very different, but some of the same principles apply. Card advantage is the best thing you can do, so spies are very good. Also, the medic card is super strong, allowing you to replay a card from your graveyard. Northern realms also has a great faction ability, drawing you a card when you win. The rest is just building a focused deck. Run the least amount of cards possible (22 units, and whatever specials you see necessary). I only run weather (aside from clear skies) when I get thrashed by a deck that's particularly heavy on one unit type. And there is a removal card, which I still haven't managed to get my hands on, but is always very strong against me

I read the american versions of The Last Wish and The Blood of Elves (the others hadn't been published yet when I read them). While they weren't groundbreaking in any particular area, I found the darker, almost fable-like quality of the stories to be refreshing. The interactions with Dandelion and Geralt are memorable, but the best part was fleshing out the world beyond what was established in The Witcher. Overall I'd suggest giving them a go since you're playing the games :)
