Third-Party Games on Nintendo Systems

This article here mentions that there have been fewer third-party games on Nintendo systems recently, which I find to be very bothersome, because I am certain that some third-party games on Nintendo systems have been awesome (although I am not certain if I can name any), and it also indicates that Nintendo is less willing to cooperate with other game companies by allowing them to have their games on its systems.
What does everyone else have to say about this situation? Is what the author of the article is saying true, or are they being excessively negative by exaggerating the situation? Will Nintendo allow more third-party games to be on its systems in the future?
It's no secret Nintendo has had very poor 3rd party system after the GameCube. The draw for Nintendo is their excellent first party titles and innovation. I hope it changes in the future but historically it won't. Both the Wii and Wii U struggled with 3rd party titles and I don't see it changing. The good news is that it doesn't matter because their AAA titles are amazing and worth it in my opinion.

Lame_Duck: how is Nintendo's hardware different from that of other consoles? And how is it that their consoles do not have a large market share? Nintendo is arguably the best-known video game company in the world, and their name is practically synonymous with video games.

Sure, Nintendo is the most well-known company but that's largely because it's been around for the longest and that doesn't necessarily translate to sales; if Wikipedia is to be believed, the Wii U has sold 13 million units as compared to 18 or 19 million for the Xbox One and 40 million for the PS4.
The hardware is just way less powerful than its competitors; Wikipedia has a comparison here if you're interested.

I have another question that is related to my first: why is it that Nintendo systems are so often excluded from major games? There have been countless games that have been on Sony and Microsoft systems and PC, but not on Nintendo systems; why do the game developers so often exclude Nintendo from their games?

Nintendo consoles haven't had great 3rd-party support since, like, the SNES and it's not really an issue of Nintendo not "allowing" more 3rd-party titles, it's just that their oddball hardware makes porting to and from their systems more difficult and more expensive and the rising cost of game development means that console-exclusives are very hard to justify financially. You're not going to get good 3rd-party support until Nintendo decide to make hardware that sticks more closely to the trends that their competitors are following, which will be never (or at least not under the current leadership), or they have a console that has a big enough market share to justify making exclusives for it like they do in the handheld market, which will also probably be never.
