What is Wrong With Ketchup?

I have recently been hearing much talk about some food connoisseurs saying that people over the age of eighteen should not have ketchup on their hot dogs and hamburgers, a declaration that seems to be very odd, to me. What is wrong with ketchup? Do those people believe that liking it is a sign of immaturity due to it being sweet? In my opinion, it is very close-minded to believe that a fondness for sweet foods is a sign of immaturity.

What does everyone else say about this? Why do some people oppose the usage of ketchup as a condiment for hot dogs and hamburgers?

Lol i can see it in front of me.. You standing besides some guy with a tophat and monocle. He is looking at your hotdog, then at you, then at your hotdog and says "Ketchup? What are you like 8?!". His hotdog is topped with various pickled things and the bun are made of wholewheat. He grins at you and walks away shaking his head. You stand there, left alone. You look at your hotdog, all red with ketchup that has started dripping on your hand. Suddenly you feel inadequate and throws your hotdog in a bush when no one sees you, then you pretend to scratch your nose while you like the ketchup off your hand. The sweet taste of tomato and sugar fills you with love and you say to yourself "oh, if only ketchup was as cool as mustard". The party is ruined and you walk home with a hole in your heart.

Is this accurate?

A lot of high class restaurants don't serve ketchup because part of good cooking is perfect flavouring. If the diner requests extra flavours then it's an insult to the chef. But like here I am talking about your kind of $200 per person dining experience, excluding wine.

9 times out of 10 there is nothing wrong with ketchup?

People can become snobby and elitist about anything. I would have to fight the urge to make outrageously decorative complements about other people's condiments - or make cartoons about this. Then I will have deemed it as having had more than sufficient attention paid to the notion.

I don't think it is the sweetness because of elite barbeque sauce or oriental style medleys. I think it is the Americana of it and it would stand alongside Kraft singles, easy Mac. PBJ, and kool-aid to this group - but I am guessing on this point.

As someone who works for a Heinz affiliated warehouse, I'd like to request that you encourage everyone you meet to continue to use ketchup, regardless of their age. I may be a little biased about the subject, but hey, I like what I do and I'd like to keep doing it. Plus, paycheck...kinda need it.

There could be a legit concern with processed foods or an interest in cooking from scratch using organic green garden stuff.

There could also be health issues with sugar and/or salt content.

It may not just be elitism now that I think about it (way more than I ever thought I might).

As for me, I don't have ketchup but I do eat it on a Chicago Style dog or a restaurant and depending on the rationale, my Sweet Baby Ray's may not pass either.

I rarely use ketchup, myself, but when I do, I try to avoid any brands with excessive sugar whenever it is possible to do so. One of my favorite brands is Sir Kensington's, which is all natural and contains far less sugar than most mainstream brands. I also feel that I should mention that I rarely ever eat hamburgers or hot dogs, instead preferring chicken wings and legs, ribs, or steak tips, which I often baste with barbecue sauce (again, all natural).

Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's good for you.

Just because it's synthetic doesn't mean it's bad for you.

Please don't believe in the organic hype.

In fact many studies suggest organic foods contain just as much of the bad stuff as non organic foods given the way soil and farming works. It's a long and boring subject but organic it's pretty much a scam.

Avoid flavourings and other chemicals that are measurably harmful but don't bother paying triple the money for some ketchup unless you really like it.

Ketchup never, under any circumstances, goes on a Chicago Dog. Other than that, it's fantastic on burgers!

I could see that if some contain too much sugar/corn syrup or red dyes, it could cause issues. Plus, it's fun to play pranks by putting it on tampons.

Personally I don't like ketchup, but I don't see why other people shouldn't eat it.
