Ever try out any of these recently popular TCGs? I'm looking to try maybe one of these with a friend:

Force of Will
Cardfight!! Vanguard
Dragoborn
Exodus

I chose another LCG instead - legend of the five rings (2017). It is a very cool but complex game with gorgeous art. And I play Eternal which is a CCG that is app/PC only, made by LSV.

Of those mentioned I have played only Cardfight!! Vanguard. It was OK, but deckbuilding was way too restrictive (build in your tribe or your deck sucks) and the art style is too YGO for me - a lot dudes in armor, a lot of dragons, and a lot of dragons in armor too.

I have played Xena, but a looooong time ago. Probably over ten years.

I think it was also made by Wizards.

@Boza, these LCG are interesting. I'd like to hear your experience deckbuilding Legend of the Five Rings. And I have Eternal downloaded on Steam, I just haven't tried it yet! The art of YGO is what turned me off of it, so hearing that about Cardfight ehhh. It's the same reason I avoid the horrible art MTG had long ago (and sometimes still has). And I have Eternal downloaded on Steam. I just haven't tried it yet!

@StardustDragon11, I hope your introduction to MTG went well?

@shadow63, how do you like Ascension?

I played Pokemon when my little brothers and college roommates were playing it back in the early 2000s. I always wished it was MTG instead and the lil bros did eventually graduate to MTG albeit at widely different intensity levels. I find Pokemon to have too much narrow focus on two creatures facing each other. I'd play Pokemon if I had the chance but I wouldn't buy into it.

I currently play Star Wars Destiny cards+dice. This game plays out more like chess and I don't wish I was playing MTG instead for that reason.

I started with Pokemon, then YGO in middle school and then magic in high school. I've also played Harry Potter and dragon Ball Z. Still nothing like seeing just legendary brolly is on paper lol

Magic is still number one though, nothing comes close in the amount of complex thought involved and the sheer scope of decks and styles is mind blowing

@cloudsol I played every FNM from like August 2010-January 2014 and then sporadically from there for a year or two. Now I'm slowly getting back into modern with elves.

@cloudsol in terms of play, with tons of branching decisions that are daunting at first is a very complex. In terms of deckbuilding, it is a bit more restricted. You have a clan (one of 7 for now) and a role (keeper or seeker + particular element). After you choose your clan, you add up to 5 cards from 1 single other clan (or 8 if you are a seeker).

The coolest thing about deckbuilding is that the results of the world championship determine your role. The best performing Scorpion player will get to choose what role + element all players from that clan will use in tournaments for the rest of the year.

I played Pokemon before magic. I came to a card store every sunday because my mom worked there that day. There was a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. By watching people play, I got a basic understanding of the game. I played with a friend's deck during school once or twice. I don't play anymore, though. When the dragon ball Z game came out, I played 1 game. It was simple, but I didn't like it.
