Zero Wing: the 30th Anniversary

This year is the 30th anniversary of Zero Wing, a side-scrolling space shooter game for the Sega Genesis that was fairly unremarkable in video game history, but is remembered for one very special reason; while its gameplay was typical of its time, the North American version of the game had an opening cutscene that was translated poorly yet hilariously, containing lines that have now been immortalized as internet memes, including "in A.D. 2101, war was beginning," "somebody set up us the bomb," "we get signal," "main screen turn on," "take of every zig," "for great justice," and, of course, "all your base are belong to us."

Amazingly, I have never actually played this game, at the time that I am making this post, as my favorite games in my childhood were DOS and Nintendo games over those of any other system, but I certainly have seen the opening cutscene and its countless parodies and references in popular culture. I am sorry for being so late with this thread, but I had completely forgotten about this anniversary until recently.

What does everyone else say about this? How do you feel about this year being the 30th anniversary of Zero Wing?

It makes me feel old...

None of my co-workers (most of whom are about half my age) have any idea WTF I’m talking about when I yell “somebody set up us the bomb!” Or the infamous “ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!!!”

That being said: it’s interesting to see the meteoric rise (and fall) of various generations of meme culture(s) over the past two decades or so..

All your 3/3 Elks are belong to us.

The meme never gets old.

It's strange to think this was 30 years ago. Feels like yesterday.

Argy, I know that feeling; I cannot believe that The Iron Giant and The Mummy (1999) are now twenty years old, or that Home Alone shall be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year.
