30 Deck Challenge: Deck #1 Mono Black

Challenges and Articles forum

Posted on Jan. 5, 2015, 7:21 p.m. by dbpunk

Earlier this month, I had posted the thirty deck challenge, where you design 30 edh decks, 2 of each monocolored combination, 1 of each dual colored combination and 1 of each tri colored combination. You will have a month to create each deck, with about a new challenge coming out every two weeks.

So here's the first deck in the 30 edh deck challenge: design a monoblack edh deck. You may choose any legal general and use any legal cards. You will be judged on:

Synergy

Creativity

Hand advantage

Viability

You have 1 month to do this (meaning it's due by 2/5/2015) The next challenge (I.e. Color combination) will come out in two weeks. Good luck! Post the deck list here for the judges to see.

New to challenges, so do I just put a link to it on here?

I don't think hand advantage is going to be possible or necessary in all combinations. Some decks get by with tempo instead of hand advantage because the nature of the deck.

Yeah just post the link to the deck here.

Ok well true but it's a fairly important part of edh generally. I'm just gonna errata that part of the post and say other utilities.

I think you should get a list of the people that wanna participate in the challenge and tag them every time you release the new challenge. Also, is it possible that the new challenges would be randomized, so we don't do all the mono, dual, and tricolored combinations in order, if you know what I mean?

So far I have a very small list of people interested but I'll be tagging people who comment on each challenge when the new one comes.

As for randomization, I'm literally doing a random number generator to decide which color were making each month (note: if anyone's interested, GU is the next challenge.)

Ah ok, good idea. Got it covered man, I like that. Are you gonna be participating yourself or just overlooking?

I'm judging. I can't participate. Also I've already have done the entire challenge by myself (twice) and I figured I should give others a chance.

Alright, a couple of other things... Say one of us already has a Jund deck posted on TappedOut... Can we submit that, or do we have to build a completely new deck? And is budget a thing with this? Realistically, I bet none of us have something like Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, or Sneak Attack. Can we utilize cards like that?

Ok you can't utilize Black Lotus or Ancestral Recall because they're both illegal in edh. But no budget limit (although be realistic). As for having a deck you already made, it's fine to submit that. For that part of the contest.

Oh yeah that's true, I forgot those were banned already. Thanks for clearing everything up man.

So, to participate must I do one for each challenge? I won't promise that. However, I'll go ahead and submit this for this one.

It's worth a try, and to be judged for each attempt is worth it though. Also props on your username.
