Calling All Standard Players Start!

Challenges and Articles forum

Posted on Oct. 21, 2013, 9:45 a.m. by Wabbbit

Seeing as it looks like the decks have stopped coming in, it's time to start! Below is the list of decks and their owners. I am also going to tag everyone who said they would help playtest. Seeding has been done by how good they did in the previous tourny. So decks that were in the previous tourny (even if they lost in round one) will be ranked higher then newcomers. Decks that were in the previous tourny and did well will be ranked highest of all, while new comers are randomly seeded, but all below the users/decks that competed in the first tourny.* Jp3ngu1nb0y's Post-Roast Esperanimator

Playtesters include: buffy, CW, blackmarker90, TrustyServantPatsy, infinitemana, sadiuh, Krayhaft, Denial048, BiggRedd54, bantam1234, flyguy.

We have eleven playtesters, thirty decks. Playtesters! Each player will playtest one round in round one, except me and CW will playtest one more each. This will finish round one. Play best two out of three, and here is the bracket. I believe that the playtesters can report the scores ON the bracket, but if not, just tell me on my profile who won. Thanks to everyone who entered and is playtesting, hopefully this will be a fun tourny! You may start playtesting whenever you wish, and you may NOT playtest your own deck if you have one in the tourny, unless it is impossible to avoid.

Happy playing!

vs. More Head Than You Can Handle

Game 1Tokens was able to remove all the early game creatures, basically just holding off the flow. Eventually Hydra's ran out of steam, and Tokens was able to drop an Elspeth with a Purphoros on the field. Hydra's got a good topdeck, and was able to bloodbrush a Ghor-Clan Rampager on its already 9/9 double striking Savageborn Hydra to get rid of the Elspeth. But next turn an Obzedat came down, and the ETB combined with a couple Young Pyromancer tokens finished off game one.

Game 2Hydra's got off to an insanely quick start, bloodrushing a Ghor-Clan Rampager on its Rakdos Cackler that was enchanted with an Ordeal of Purphoros . The Ordeal killed off Tokens only blocker, letting Hydra's swing for 8 early. Hydra's then closed out the game with a Mistcutter Hydra and a Kalonian Hydra . Tokens simply couldn't keep up.

Game 3Tokens was once again able to stem the flow of creatures, killing a huge Savageborn Hydra and crippling Hydra's offence. Also, Obzedat, Ghost Council + Purphoros, God of the Forge is nasty, as that is what eventually closed out the third and deciding game.

First match goes to Milling Grixis.

after Doom Blade ing the few threats and throwing out 5 swings with Deathcult Rogue grixis was left at 2 life throwing out a Wall of Frost and a Consuming Aberration for game dealing damage rather than milling.

match two was won by Cymophane

tossing out a bunch of attackers while grixis was getting mana skrewed then when cymo was left with one dude he tossed 2 Ordeal of Thassa s on it leaving grixis at one drawing 4 cards then Spark jolt ing for game

match three was won by grixis getting a ton of removal and a nice Rakdos's Return taking out the pump cards then tossing out an 18/18 consuming ab

for grixis I say consider Mind Grind and some keyrunes in the mb and Psychic Strike , Counterflux , and Mizzium Mortars in the sb.

for cymo I say choose which side to lean more towards between aggro or control then look into cards that would help in those colors Madcap Skills and rdw style cards for aggro and Counterflux , Izzet Charm and such for control, if you want I can help I just need to know how you want to play it.

Euthyphro vs. Take the stairs? Nah, I'll use the ramp

Game 1 A couple well-timed Detention Sphere s from Bant took out all of Ramps main threats, letting Bant swing with its fatties with out any opposition. This game was closed out by a Monstrous Polukranos and a Monstrous Fleecemane.

Game 2 This game was literally won by Medomai the Ageless . The fact that ramp couldn't touch him made him a HUGE advantage, giving Bant tons of extra turns, which eventually led into an unblockable 7/7 Polukranos for the ending swing.

infinitemana: I think your deck is really well built, but I would highly suggest Arbor Colossus . He deals nicely with a lot of your main weaknesses, and can be a huge bomb. That's not even including all the ramp you have that will let him come down even quicker!

KrazyCaley: I really like the deck, but a few choices surprised me. Like Divine Verdict . Why run it when you could be playing something like Azorius Charm or something better? Maybe Celestial Flare ? It just seems to me you could be running better cards in that slot. Oh, and Wasteland Viper . If your looking for some sort of green removal, I think Boon Satyr would be a much better choice. I really like the deck though!

Game 1: Epic Izzet

There couldn't be a worst match-up for Did Someone Say Enchantments?. Everything played was Immediately dealt with by instant speed burn. Heliod, God of the Sun helped by putting 2/1 clerics on the field, But by then Chandra's Pheonix and excess burn had put down Aerokid's life total to zero.

SB: Izzet -3 Ral Zarek +3 Skullcrack

SB: Mono-White: -4 Soldier of the Pantheon +4 Fiendslayer Paladin

Game 2: Did Someone Say Enchantments?

How do you neutralize a red burn deck? Simple...Fiendslayer Paladin enchanted with Gift of Orzhova and a couple of Ethereal Armor s. Aerokid took this one easy.

SB: Izzet: +3 Rapid Hybridization -3 Epic Experiment

SB: Mono-White: None

Game 3: Did Someone Say Enchantments?

Favored Hoplite got going after a couple of failed burn attempts thanks to Gods Willing . After a Gift of Orzhova the life total was becoming out of reach for Epic Izzet. Only hope was to draw a Rapid Hybridization or a mix of burn, He saw neither and a 5/6 Favored Hoplite and Heliod, God of the Sun got Omnilolo's life to zero.

Death By EXILE! vs A Dance With Deathrite

G1: A Dance With Deathrite took an early lead, but a Supreme Verdict followed by AEtherling on next turn for Death By EXILE! ended badly for A Dance With Deathrite, who quickly became mana flooded.

G2: A Dance With Deathrite managed to pull out a Whipped Ghost Daddy, and the lifelink allowed him to keep up with Death By EXILE!'s next turn Aetherling.

G3: A Dance With Deathrite kept a constant stream of Lifebane Zombie s going along with Whip of Erebos , creating too much of an early advantage.

Winner: A Dance With Deathrite (2-1)

First round went to Double Double Double Double... Counters!

tossing out a ton of little dudes that just got fatter and fatter, it was like a freakin innistrad vampire deck, the fact that both Kalonian Hydra and Corpsejack Menace were removed before they did anything didnt even matter.

though infinite got some good lifegain and some sweet swings with Horizon Chimera , the combo was nowhere to be seen.

Round two also went to double, after both decks sat at a stalemate drawing land turn after turn double threw out a lulzworthy Strionic Resonator , then dropped a menace that was left untouched even after an 8/8 hydra was dropped, he put an Alpha Authority on the now massive 48/48 Kalonian Hydra and attacked with it for game, Archangel of Thune was left to be squashed by the monsterous hydra.

for now I say double needs some protection from flyers they were soaring overhead and almost took you out.

and for infinite I say you have way too much mana/ramp I say drop the Chromatic Lantern for and a land for 4 Sylvan Caryatid and drop 2 more lands and a Judge's Familiar for the final 3 Archangel of Thune Horizon Chimera and Fathom Mage

im gonna +1 both decks since this was a really interesting and fun matchup.

Akroan Horse Doesn't Suck goes 2-0 against Master Thieves!

October 22, 2013 7:29 p.m.

infinitemana says... #23

Akroan Horse Doesn't Suck vs. Master Thieves: Horse beat Thieves 2-1
Game 1: Horse got stuck on two lands for the whole game, and despite doing it's best to survive with creature burn, it eventually got Overrun (not actually, but magic wordplay is fun!) by Thieves mass of card drawing creatures.
Game 2: This time it was Horse that came blazing out of the gates, and Thieves was forced to use it's Ophidian s to chump block.
Game 3: I think that this was the best game. Both decks were playing at their maximum capability, and it showed the most about the matchup. Most of Thieves creatures are either three or four drops, and so it wasn't able to cast enough creatures to successfully defend and draw.
My suggestions for the decks:
Horse: 20 land isn't nearly enough for a deck with Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Assemble the Legion . I would cut Firemane Avenger and Tajic, Blade of the Legion for some more land, and to make some more of the cards in your deck four-ofs for the sake of consistency.
Thieves: Sorry to burst your bubble if you didnt realize this at first, but it's not a very competitive deck. That being said, I think it is a very cool idea.

GoldGhost012 says... #24

Hmm, a double playtest... Well at least the result was the same! :D

Got anything to add to infinitemana's assessment of our decks Krayhaft?

October 22, 2013 7:58 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #25

I agree with infinitemana about there not being enough lands in the Horse deck. The land count should be upped to 24, 23 minimum. There are simply too many high cost spells in that deck, although I got really lucky with those mulligans.

Purphoros is a very strong card in this deck, and I was very happy to draw him. Doubles of him, not so much.

I actually really like Tajic here. He's a great wall when you're on the defensive, and massive on the offensive. Firemane Avenger is great too, but I would cut her out just because the 4-drop slot is clogged.

Master Thieves is a pretty cool deck concept, although the "dies to removal" argument is very strong against this deck. If you happen to not draw creatures many of the cards in hand are dead. I'm not really sure why Prowler's Helm and Glaring Spotlight are here, other than to make your guys harder to block. But, if you have guys to stick them on, there's no point. Both games I got really land flooded, 24 lands isn't so helpful here. I would stick more aggressive creatures in here, this deck looks like it's only a few steps off from being a mono-blue devotion deck.

One point of note: Stolen Identity onto the opponent's Akroan Horse , then doing it again with a cipher copy, to get two, is hilarious. That came about in my Game 2, and it helped MT on the defensive. However, AH has too many threats, to MT's too few.

The Gorgon in the Fog vs. Rise from the Grave

Game 1Junk started off well, landing mana dorks that eventually led into multiple copies of Desecration Demon and Dreg Mangler . TurboFog had an opening hand of 3x Fog , but literally could NOT draw any other fog effects. It played a Jace and 2x Urban Evolution trying to dig for one, but couldn't come up with one. Eventually all of the heavy beaters on Junks side of the board did their duty, only facing down a couple of defenders and a 1/1 assassin from Vraska.

Game 2Even with 3x Dissolve , Junk has so many threats that you can never have too many counterspells. Eventually on Obzedat broke through the counterspells, and TurboFog could do nothing about it the rest of the game, and with no clear cut way to win, it basically was just sitting there as obzedat drained fog all the way from 14 to 0.

MindAblaze!: having Reap Intellect as your win con is tough in the best of times. It's even harder when you only have 1x. You don't really have a way to win, even IF you cast a Reap Intellect . It's basically just fog and defenders that don't seem to really have a purpose. I suggest upping your count on Reap Intellect up to three, adding some kill spells, getting rid of Vraska, and maybe adding in even more ways to win. Like AEtherling . Some more fogs could be nice too. Suggested swaps: -3 Vraska -1 Omenspeaker -1 Cyclonic Rift -1 Returned Phalanx +2 Reap Intellect +2 AEtherling +2 Hero's Downfall . Vraska, now that I think about it, could be good at one or two, but no more then that. I think these edits alone could smooth out the deck, but I'd still like to get more fog effects in there.

Denial048: your deck is really well made, it's ridiculous how many threats you can pump out! I don't really have anything to suggest so far, so just good job!

October 23, 2013 11:12 a.m.

Denial048 says... #29

G1: Double Double Double Double... Counters! got a quick 16/16 Kalonian Hydra thanks to a Vorel of the Hull Clade , taking A Dance With Deathrite to 12 after needed chumps. Next turn deathrite got Obzedat, Ghost Council out and after a Selesnya Charm on the kalonian, counters couldn't keep up. Win for Deathrite

G2:Counters gets off to a quick start but holds off knowing that Deathrite might have a charm. After getting a couple of hydras to 12/12 + counters swings into a charm and Hero's Downfall on the two massive hydras. After top decking a second charm Deathrite passes turn, and counters plays a 14/14 Mistcutter Hydra (x for 7 and Corpsejack Menace ) and swings into a second charm. Boardstate saty pretty even until Deathride brings out Obdezat again doing damage and gaining life, but a timely downfall from counters stops ghost daddy and on the folloing turn counters swings for fatal with a 6/6 Experiment One . Win for Counters

G3: Deathrite mulls to 5 on the open, then gets an early Deathrite Shaman to get Counters to 14 with spell exile. After counters downfall's the shaman both players get mana flooded for a few turns. Counters finally gets a Kalonian out, and hoping that Deathrite is not hold a charm taps Vorel to get the hydra to 8 then 16/16 as he swings; into yet another Charm. evening the boardstate again. Deathrite top decks Obzedat, Ghost Council and play him immediately. Passing and exiling ghost daddy. Counters draws a downfall and passes. on Deathrite's next turn he draws a Desecration Demon and as he brings obdezat back Counters downfalls it. Deathrite plays the demon and passes. Drawing an experiment one he plays it then a corpsejack putting two menaces on the field making One a 5/5, the following turn he taps Vorel again and makes Experiment a 21/21 sacs Vorel and swings hitting a Selesnya Charm and getting exiled. Deathrite tops a Whip of Erebos and brings back Ob for 2 taking counters to 8, then swings for 12 with Desecration and Ob. Counters blocks Ob with a corpsejack. Hoping for a Putrefy Counters draws a Watery Grave and concedes. Win for Deathrite

Game 1: Dega midrange

Rise from the grave got off to a hot start with Lotleth Troll and Dreg Mangler taking Dega down to 10 early. But an open Boros Reckoner halted the turn for attacks. Rise not getting very good draws played land go. Dega played Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Rise followed with 2x Grisly Salvage getting him a Forest and a Sylvan Caryatid . Dega eventually stabalized and started the beatdown. With no response Rise conceded.

Game 2: Dega midrange

A lot closer this time. Early game had seen Rise take an early lead with 2x Sylvan Caryatid s out and Obzedat, Ghost Council . But Dega killed Obby with a Hero's Downfall . Rise played Desecration Demon and passed. Dega responded with a Chained to the Rocks and a rakdos return for 2 killing Rise's hand. Next turn Rise played Temple of Silence ..pass. Dega played Desecration Demon . Next draw for rise was a Grisly Salvage into a Lotleth Troll . Rise sacrificed his sylvan caryatid to tap dessi, and Dega played Obby. Next turn Rise drew Angel of Serenity . But couldn't play it. Hoping for land next turn Rise drew Whip of Erebos and conceded.

The Mighty Thune | Meat 'n Potatoes (10-0) vs. Complete Darkness (2-1)

Game 1The brute force of selesnya beat out the brute force of mono-black, as not even a Desecration Demon on Mono-Black's side of the board could stop Archangel of Thune and multiple Advent of the Wurm tokens, all getting bigger with Archangel and a Trostani. Selesnya keeps up its reign of terror, making it to 11-0 over the two combined tournaments.

Game 2Selesnya, yet again, got off to a great start. Leading off with an Archangel of Thune , Voice of Resurgence , a knight token from Selesnya Charm , and Advent of the Wurm , it looked like it was over for Mono-Black. But it was not to be. Mono-Black then played a Agent of the Fates which ended up getting targeted by 2x Boon of Erebos , making Selesnya sac some of its attack force. Those two sacs were then followed up by 2x Doom Blade and 1x Hero's Downfall , resulting in only a monstrous Fleecemane Lion on Selesnya's board. Mono-Black was able to land a Desecration Demon , which paired up with Selesnya drawing three straight lands, spelled Selesnya's first loss in two combined tournaments!

Game 3Wow. What a game. Selesnya, as usual, got off to a good start that ended up, like last game, getting killed off. But this time when the Demon came down, Selesnya was ready with a Selesnya Charm . Unluckily, though, Mono-Black simply top decked another one and played it, followed up by a Whip of Erebos . It looked bad for Selesnya, but it bounced back and was able to sustain enough creatures to sac to the demon to stay alive. Selesnya was then able to drop an Archangel of Thune followed up by 2x Trostani, Selesnya's Voice which quickly boosted the Archangels power. Then the second Archangel came down, and the life started to be gained, and the angels got past 10 power. The once giant Demon now looked like a kitten compared to the might of angels! Eventually, even with Mono-Black gaining tons of life from Whip, Selesnya was able to beat through for 19 damage in one swing from both Archangels to end the game.

TrustyServantPatsy: again, your deck is just as good as before not much to say but good work!

abenz419: wow, great job in defeating Selesnya for the first time in history, and almost doing it a second time! Great job on the deck, it played really well. Decks were really even. Great work.

One problem. You can't have two Trostani, Selesnya's Voice on the field at one time as it is a legendary creature

Yeah, I know. I meant after the first one died, I didn't specify that I played one that died, then played another. Sorry about that!

damn, those sound like some really good games. Glad to see my deck is actually performing well even if I did lose in the second round. At least I was able to accomplish something that hadn't been done yet throughout the tourneys.
