Challenge!

Go to Gatherer and hit random card, and build a deck using 4 of those cards and having it as a central piece in the deck. If it's a basic land, skip it, if it's a piece of removal, you can skip it if you'd like. post results below! Just don't keep hitting random till a Tarmogoyf or a liliana comes up.

What's the incentive for doing so?

You become a better deckbuilder. Simple deckbuilding exercise.

This has been done in the past, but in a better manner - the person who issues the challenge issues a set of cards to play with, usually within a similar category - cards that are bad (Fasting), cards that pose restrictions on deckbuilding (Wall of Mulch), etc.

How is it a challenge/competition if I randomly select Fasting and someone randomly draws Abrupt Decay. There is no basis or premise behind this to justify it.

I think this is less of a challenge against others and more of a challenge against yourself to become a better deck builder.

I just did it twice. I will save the trouble for 2 people to go to gatherer and hit the random card button: Build a deck with Blinding Beam or Pentagram of the Ages. There is a difference between creating a deck with potential and refining it and creating something that will not achieve anything.

95%, if not more, of cards cannot be central cards for a deck.

Also, centering a deck around a single card makes the deck inherently bad - if you do not draw said card, what do you do? Do you include Infernal Tutor to find your central card Fasting and improve consistency?

Boza if you don't like the challenge don't participate. Both those cards can have interesting decks built around them. For example, with Blinding Beam, you can add a bunch of Inspired creatures and other tap engines to trigger their abilities (and Blinding Beam has the other benefit of slowing the opponent down). With Pentagram of the Ages you can put in creatures that are mana efficient but deal damage to you every turn.

Not every deck has to be tournament worthy. Building interesting decks is a creative exercise that can be really fun.

If you're not going to be nice, just leave. It was a random thought that I had, so I posted it. Don't be an asshole just because you don't like it. Now leave.

This probably came out a little snarky, but I do mean what I say - building decks that I will never be willing to sleeve and use, even on the kitchen table, is not a good exercise in deckbuilding (for me). All this time, I was challenging the notion that this can help your deckbuilding skills.

Taking a rough gem in the dirt and polishing it can bring great results. Taking the dirt on the gem and trying to do much with it is not that good of an idea (for deckbuilding skills).

This is the last snarky post from me on this topic, I promise.

As an apology for the snark, allow me to be the first one to actually post a deck with a random card Goatnapper:
