Spooty Decks: Modern?
Challenges and Articles forum

Hey all, Spooty here.
I've actually been having a desire to build some modern brews lately. However I got started and found myself having a very hard time trying to balance creating something that was unique and fun/interesting while also being remotely competitive. It kind of ruined a little bit of the spark.
So, a question: Do you guys even care if the deck I make an article for is competitive? I'm not saying it won't try to win and be a tight list, but not having to worry about all the strict ins and outs of "how does this match up versus Siege Rhino, Lightning Bolt, Splinter Twin, etc" all the time would be nice. I don't play Modern very often so I'm not really aware if there are people who play the format semi-casually by playing with decks that can win but not against a strict competitive metagame.
Thanks

CanadianShinobi is already making a modern article, I believe. The first thing to consider is your comfort zone though. Play whatever you feel best with.

non competitive modern decks are amazing so long as they're well put together.
aka I'd rather see mono green mill or Hellcarver Demon glass cannon than some cruddy pile of bulk rares.
with that said, regardless of the deck you use, I have no doubt that your article will be a good read... all of your articles have been to this date.

I love reading about weird and wacky decks more than tiered decks. Janky combo decks are what I love about Modern, and so I'd much prefer reading about them than another Twin/Junk article.
Happy brewing!

We're writing modern articles right now about CanadianShinobi's new deck.

ChiefBell, is there not enough room here for more than one person to talk about and brew modern lists? CanadianShinobi is more than welcome to continue with his series and pretty much anything else he wishes to make. People have been expressing an intrest and desire for me to delve into Modern so im considering doing so in my own new series that began last week. Or am I misinterprefing your comment?
Other people: As a johnny-spike, its nearly impossible for me not to at least put some competitive effort into decks I make, and I think I see what people are saying. Ill do my best! Just cut me a little slack since its my first time :P

Spootyone I think the problem we're going to run into is that you and I have stumbled upon the same idea. And by stumbled, I mean I decided to blatantly take your original Showdown idea for Modern. Take something half way decent and play against various submitted decks.

@CanadianShinobi Is it really an issue that two people are running showdown articles using different decks? As long as the decks aren't identical, it shouldn't be an issue whatsoever.

I dont know. The site could get a bit 'moderned out'. Though if we alternated it it would be perfect. You publish every 4 weeks, we publish every 4 weeks - 2 weeks between each article.
For example
Us (week 1), You (week 3), Us (week 5), You (week 9) etc.

That or Spooty and I team up.
Spootyone has the article writing down pat and I have the Modern know how. The original idea was to bring other users in, but that seems less than ideal after this write up because unless I pick well known users like ChiefBell the feedback and writing assistance would probably be lack luster.

sorry busy at the moment. I will give a good response in a sec here

Alright so first off, CanadianShinobi:
As soon as I read your first episode of your series (And I did read them), I recognized that you had created a "modern showdown". And that's totally fine! I don't have a right to the content I make being unexplored by others. And furthermore, people were asking me for a modern showdown at the time to which I said "no". At the time, I had no intention of getting into Modern.
I consider the fact that you took an idea I had and improved upon it an honor. I certainly hold no bad feelings towards you. And if you want me to work with you on an article or anything in the future all you have to do is hit me up on my wall or if you'd prefer, my email: '[email protected]' (no apostrophes).
It was never my intention to begin making a "modern showdown". I still vastly prefer standard to Modern. I find the fact that modern's metagame is NOT ever-shifting with rotations, etc to be pretty boring and the reason why I always enjoyed standard and limited was because I got to play with all the new cards when they came out. So, let this be clear: I am not at this time (or possibly ever) going to be making an exclusively modern showdown or even more than an episode or two with modern decks.
Now, to everyone:
I haven't yet brought back Showdown. And to be honest, I can't say for certainty that I will bring it back. I really don't know yet. What I do know is that I have a good time making content for you all no matter what it is, and if making a Showdown is too much work for me at the moment than I simply cannot do it. What I have been able to do, however, is make these small, silly deck techs in my new series "Spooty Decks".
THAT is what I was making this thread about. I recognize from my comments that people are interested to see me brew with nearly any format -- including Modern. On a whim, I decided to maybe brew some modern but asked the questions above to make for some clarification. It was not my intention to cause any sort of drama -- minor or otherwise -- involving who can create what. You are free to make the content you want to make. Anyone is. It's a free market! If people like my content more than someone else than that's cool. If they don't then I should do better or just be okay with it.
Additionally (and I've expressed this opinion before), there is certainly enough demand that people would enjoy more than one article every 3 weeks or 2 weeks or 1 week....Hell, I know there are people who would read daily content on here. The problem is that we don't have enough people making things and while I'd love to produce daily content for everyone to enjoy, I'm not getting paid to do so. And I can't afford to spend that kind of time doing so without the knowledge that I will be able to put food on the table and pay my rent, you know?
So since that can't be the case, I encourage any and all people to create the content they want to create on this site. We could fill the demand and make this site greater than it already is -- I know it. But the only way is to allow more influx of content - even if it means people working under the same umbrellas.
Oh and if there's anyone out there who wants to pay me to make daily content, you should also contact me :P I could use another part-time job.

Spootyone well that clears that up. Likewise if you need any feedback or you just want to bounce ideas around for a brew.

I guess we just keep going with modern showdowns then.

CanadianShinobi, ChiefBell: If at any point you're down a man and need a fill-in or just want me there, Don't hesitate to let me know :)

Darn. Left out again.
I promise, I have ideas to contribute!
The others walked away, and slowly the young man began to plot and scheme. No more would he be ignored by humanity.

Lol. Glistener, do you want to do something by chance? :P

I mean, if something is needed. I just think I could be helpful is all.

I will absolutely add you to my list of people who I can contact for ideas and opinions et cetera, then. And if you have any ideas for content that you want to run by me or if you want to co-lab, let me know at [email protected] !

I do appreciate when you keep competitive stuff in mind when doing your thing. For instance, I have a friend who recently fell in love with pixie stix. We've been reworking the original list quite a bit with stuff like Ancient Stirrings, mainboarding green sources, and moving Pithing Needles into the SB. It's vastly increased the deck's consistency. The deck's not truly competitive but it does surprisingly well vs some common decks.
