The Eight Rare Challenge Part 2. Modern

Challenges and Articles forum

Posted on Nov. 11, 2014, 5:12 p.m. by TheGamer

So, at a PTQ I went to a couple months ago, they had an option where you could participate in the Eight Rare Challenge. And, I feel like it is very self explanatory. Create a Modern Legal deck, with only Eight Rares! This includes lands. No more!

Now, to keep this interesting, don't use the same deck as someone already did. If someone submitted a Twin deck, no one else submit Twin! As soon as we reach seven more players, I will fire a tournament! Good luck to all and Happy Deckbuilding!

Being the first one to post on your own challenge is a strike against it. Winning it is another one. :)

That's what I was talking about.

People might get suspicious. It also looks kinda childish.

Maybe this will have more success than Delver :)

Probably not. Scapeshift itself and lands is already all the rares xD

There are ten decks, but I don't need to participate. Sorry KingSorin, but you were a little late to the party. Here is the bracket, matches will start soon:

Soul Sisters VS Scapeshift

Delver VS Illusions (really excited about this match, lol)

Affinity VS Burn

Stompy Ramp VS Twin

Good luck to all players!

rorofat says... #23

Poor Scapeshift :( with only 27 possible damage through mountains, I think he needs a nut draw to beat soul sisters...

At least I got an OK matchup... I still doubt I'm going to win...

Also for future reference, TheGamer, if you want to run more of these challenges, you should tag everybody by putting our names in parens ((rorofat)) with [s instead of (s produces rorofat which tags me.

If you ever don't have the time, but want to run one, I'd be happy to help :)

Race! Race! Race! I'm excited. I'm just hoping I don't get paired against Soul Sisters...lol.

Soul Sisters VS Scapeshift: Sisters 2-0. ighly in Soul Sisters favor, because of Aven Mindcensor and all the lifegain, it is almost unwinnable for Scapeshift. Game one was taken by Soul Sisters because of lifegain and the destroying of Valakut made Sisters the winner. Game 2 with the lifegain, even a trigger for 18 damage couldn't kill the opponent, so sisters wins!

Delver VS Illusions: Delver wins 2-1. Game 1 Delver was able to beat down Illusions, and was eventually able to overrun him with elementals, even after he was building back a board state. Game 2 Illusions win after overpowering a 1/2 with 4 4/4 flying. Game 3 Delver takes it away after every threat played by Illusions died, and the small 1/2 was swinging for 3 damage every turn.

Affinity VS Burn: Game 1 Burn was able to kill every threat played, but that didn't stop an endless flow of threats, and a 5/5 indestructible with double Cranial Plating. Game 2 a simple Bolt from Burn mana screwed Affinity, since he had a Mox Opal out with exactly three artifacts on board, and then one died. He was screwed for a few turns, and that was time for burn to take the game.

After that, my computer crashed. I don't have match details, but all I know is Affinity beat Burn 2-1 and Green Stompy beat Twin 2-0.

The next bracket will be as followed:

Soul Sisters VS Delver

Affinity VS Green Stompy

Thanks to everyone who entered the tournament, and sorry it took so long. I had something to do today :P

TheGamer says... #26

Soul Sisters VS Delver: Delver wins 2-1. Game 1 Delver kept putting on pressure with Swiftspear always becoming huge numbers in power and 2 flipped Delvers. Also, burn and a few cruises kept him in the game. Game 2 Delver was relatively flooded. But other than that, Sisters had 5 2/2 fliers, and delver doesn't have many answers to that. Game 3 Delver landed a turn 1 Monastery Swiftspear and turn 2 double Swiftspear. Lots of burn later and Delver beats Sisters 2-1.

Affinity VS Stompy: Affinity wins 2-0. Game 1 a 10/1 flier with lifelink was too much for stompy, even with 2 4/5's. Game 2, an explosive turn 1 led to a swing for 11 in the air on turn 3, so Affinity takes down Stompy 2-0.

So now in the finals, it will be laughingman123 with Affinity VS nighthawk101 with Delver!

IKR TheHroth? I kinda felt bad when I saw the bracket, Scapeshift does not appreciate lifegain one bit.

November 13, 2014 8:21 p.m.

rorofat says... #29

XD gg I hope you run another one soon :)

November 13, 2014 8:32 p.m.

TheGamer says... #30

Lol TheHroth, its almost unwinnable. Now, to the finals.

Delver VS Affinity. Game 1 Delver takes the win after being able to finally beat down Affinity with his 3/2 Insect, even though Affinity had some huge power creatures, the insect takes down the robots. Game 2 Delver is again able to take down robots with 2 3/2 fliers.

So in the end, the Scary Insect Aberrations take down the endless onslaught of Robots. Congrats to nighthawk101 for winning the tournament! And congrats to laughingman123 for making it this far in the tournament. Thanks everyone for joining! If you're interested in partipating in the next one, check out the Challenges and Articles section, and it should be there in the next few minutes!

I'm curious: how strong was Treasure Cruise in the games?

November 14, 2014 7:12 a.m.

TheHroth says... #34

Strictly worse than Ancestral Recall? But almost the same.

November 14, 2014 7:14 a.m.

TheGamer says... #35

Lol TheHroth :P

nighthawk101: They're basically the reason you won. Eventually, you ran out of cards and Treasure Cruise refilled your hand. Also, with all the spells going to the graveyard, i was able to cast 3 Treasure Cruise one game!
