The Eight Rare Challenge Part 3. Modern
Challenges and Articles forum

So, at a PTQ I went to a couple months ago, they had an option where you could participate in the Eight Rare Challenge. And, I feel like it is very self explanatory. Create a Modern Legal deck, with only Eight Rares! This includes lands. No more! And also, sideboards will not be included.
Now, to keep this interesting, don't use the same deck as someone already did. If someone submitted a Twin deck, no one else submit Twin! As soon as we reach eight more players, I will fire a tournament! Good luck to all and Happy Deckbuilding

here is my 8 rare modern deck for the challenge, i realize that its only 5 rares, but i wanted to keep it exactly as my physical deck is to see how it would fare against the other decks in the challenge. i could add a few extra rares if i have to bump it up to 8.looks like an awesome idea!

ektoe253: The deck is fine with just 5 rares, you only need a max of 8.

also, @thegamer, how is this going to work exactly? are you going to put all of our decks together and play them at your local tournament center and show us the results at the end or something? as we dont live in the same place?

Right now we have six people, and everyone's decks are legal. We will wait for the last two players to enter before we start.

If you need some explanation let me know. Just by looking at the deck it can be hard to see the end goal.

tooTimid: I hate to sound like a noob, but I don't know how Restore Balance wins. I've seen the deck a bunch of times but still don't understand it.
And that makes eight players! Here's the bracket:
Storm VS RDW
Living End VS Vampires
Eight Rack VS RUG
Tron VS Restore Balance
Matches will start soon, but I will wait on the Tron VS Restore balance deck, since I don't know how it wins XD
November 15, 2014 4:31 p.m.
Storm VS RDW: RDW wins 2-0. Game 1 was taken by RDW. Storm was searching for a Blistercoil Weird, but couldn't find one. Game 2 RDW takes down Storm again, after Eidolon of the Great Revel stops Storm in its tracks.
Living End VS Vampires: Vampires win 2-0. Game 1 Vampires wins after Living End cant find a Cascade card fast enough, and lost to multiple Blood Artist triggers. Game 2 the endless flow of Vampires wins again, after a Vampire Nocturnus made all the weenies huge.
Eight Rack VS RUG: RUG wins 2-0. Eight rack tore apart the hand of RUG, but RUG was able to stabilize with 3 Treasure Cruises. Game 2 was very close. RUG was mana screwed for a while, but all the cards he discarded fueled Treasure Cruise which found him lands.
Tron VS Restore Balance: 0-0.

No prob. I'm sure you can find a primer somewhere, but the general idea is to cascade into Restore Balance, with one of the three:
A planeswalker in play,
Greater Gargadon suspended,
Or
Multiple Borderposts and 1-2 lands.
In the first senario is fairly easy to take over the game. Pretty self explanatory. An Ajani on 4, when your opponent has 1 land, and no creatures, is pretty safe.
If you have a Gargadon suspended when you cast Restore Balance you need to instantly sac all lands/creatures, so when it resolves your opponents will have nothing and you have a 9/7.
Finally if all you can manage is a Restore Balance with lands/Borderposts in play, you will probably stay at 1 land, and your opponent will lose everything but one land. From there you can cast a Beast Within/http://static.tappedout.net/None_medium.jpgSpirit Guide/Any thing power greater than 0, and get on the old control and beat down plan.
Also remember that, unlike Living End, it's not terrible to just suspend it.
Hope this helps. I don't want to derail this thread so if you have any questions put them on my wall. Thanks! Good luck!

That's how I thought it would work tooTimid, just wanted to make sure...
Tron VS Restore Balance: Game 1 restore balance takes the win after he resolves a Restore Balance and wipes the whole field of the opponent. Greater Gargadon wins after a few turns. Again, game 2 was won by restore Balance after Restore Balance wiped the board, and Greater gargadon took the game.
Here's the next bracket:
RDW VS Vampires
RUG VS Restore Balance
November 15, 2014 5:34 p.m.
RDW VS Vampires: Vampires win 2-1. Game 1 RDW takes it. Vampires started to stabilize, but then Eidolon of the Great Revel made every spell Vampires cast, a 2 damage burn spell. Game 2 Vampires was very aggressive, and quickly swung for lethal against RDW. In Gamee 3, Vampire Nighthawk just started getting out of hand, and RDW's Goblin Guide actually accelerated vampires a lot, which ended with a turn 2 Vampire Nighthawk.
RUG VS Restore Balance: Might I just say before we get to the match, the mana base for RUG was pretty terrible. I didnt have the right color barely ever. Anyway, game 1 RUG was blue and green screwed the whole game. Balance was unable to draw a Garagadon and Cascade card in time, and when RUG finally drew a mana source, he won with Tarmogoyf. game 2 same occurrence, except he won with a few Elemental tokens.
So in the finals, its going to be ektoe253 with vampires VS laughingman123 with RUG.

I'm not surprised the manabase is bad i made it about 5 minutes before i had to go to work then forgot to tweak it.
November 16, 2014 10:15 a.m.
The Finals, Vampires VS RUG: Vampires wins 2-0. Game 1 was taken by Vampires after Vampire Nighthawk gained a huge amount of life, and kept on the early aggression. Game 2 RUG was flooded, and didn't flip Delver of Secrets Flip, and all the small vampires were able to take game 2.
So, that makes ektoe253 your winner! Congrats to him and laughingman123 for being our finalists, and thanks everyone for joining the event!
