The Obscure Tribe Challenge 2: Annihilation

Challenges and Articles forum

The Obscure Tribe Challenge official contest may have come to an Utter End, but it turns out the end was only an Utter Beginning! Coming from tons of support from the competitors, plenty of users wishing to join in the fun and the number of tribes that have been left untouched, I propose a freeform challenge-based brawl!

Here's how this wiil work! For our 16 competitors, you can challenge any other competitor in the comments section, regardless of their division. I will then battle your two decks together and write the results of the matchuo with my normal descriptive aplomb.

For users without a tribal deck, build one according to the deckbuilding rules (see The Obscure Tribe Challenge 2: Electric Boogaloo for details) and then challenge one of our sixteen competitors. These competitors again can be found in the above forum thread. Pay attention to which of the sixteen creature types has been taken so you can make a tribal deck that hasn't been taken yet. REMEMBER, IT HAS TO BE OBSCURE AND AWESOME! Again, post your challenge in the comments with your decklist linked and I will fight your tribe against your chosen poison from our sixteen competitors, or if you fancy, my own example/reserve deck for the challenge (Horses).

Should I repost mine here?

pookypuppy6 says... #4

No need quesobueno123. For those not in the know of the competitors of this challenge, the links I have provided should give plenty of information as to the tribes that can be challenged and their owners. Just don't delete the decks, guys!

You are also officially free to edit the decks now.

Also, once a challenger with a new deck has posted, anyone can challenge THAT user and that deck, just to clarify. Once you've submitted and challenged, you are part of the neverending brawl!

A plague approaches as well as a new challenger. For my first battle, I would like to give some dogs rabies. Place me against the hounds.

HOUNDS (Kizmetto) vs GERMS (luther)

Armored germ cohorts versus a pack of rabid Alsatians. Game One was a total wash as the blasted bacteria drew nought but land and creature enhancements without ever applying any thought to disease despite a mulligan to six. This allowed the Hounds to woof their way to an easy 1-0 lead with Jackal Familiar and a Beast token with 26 life left. Game Two saw the gruesome Germs get off much better, fixing a Cranial Plating to a Flayer Husk and germing in. But when it traded with a Mongrel Pack, a surprise Coat of Arms meant the four Hound tokens became mighty 4/4 hunters of HounDoom and launched an overwhelming counterattack, leaving the Germs unable to defend and winning the match 2-0 with 14 life remaining!

Keep t one deck if you can guys, and only because that means more peeps can jump in with original tribes. Seeing as we've had two Scarecrow decks jump in (they wouldn't score highly on obscurity I tell you now), t's admittedly hard to avoid that happening anyway, but it's just the principle of giving other peeps a chance to build the obscure tribe they want to without someone taking it up along with three others for themselves.

Scarecrow matchups today..

It helps me write matchups if peeps actually issued a specific challenge rather than just voice one's enthusiasm to be challenged! :p Kudos still.

How about this: Infral's Frogs versus Femme_Fatale's Horrors? (I picked Horrors because Kor may be low on numbers, but have a pretty decent tribal identity and arguably a Lord, aren't that ancient and had had a high profile Commanderwalker made recently)

SCARECROWS (Arctic) vs PHOENIXES (Rocknj06)

Game One was a dud as the Scarecrows mulled to six and got land stuck quickly, giving the Phoenixes plenty of time to roll out their flaming chickens of doom in the form of Chandra's Phoenix and Flame-Wreath Phoenix. Despite a Banefire wiping Chandras wingman (hehehe), the Scarecrows were steamrolled and the birds of rebirth took a 1-0 lead with 20 life left. Game Two saw the Scarecrows start better and attempt to set up Pili-Pala shenanigans, but with a successive spray of Magma Jets and even Red Sun's Zenith, the Scarecrow board was frequently incinerated long enough for three Valakuts to rain volcanic death with each Mountain dealing 9 damage; with a Chandra, the Firebrand pinging for one as well, the Scarecrows were beaten in the least Phoenix-y manner yet for a 2-0 win with 20 life left.

SCARECROWS (Psyloarchy) vs ASSEMBLY-WORKERS (BMpatrol)

A Scarecrow double-feature! Game One started lightning-fast for the stickpeople as the Loci lands powered out a Scarecrone, a Wingrattle Scarecrow and then Reaper King by Turn 5 while the Assembly-Workers struggled to Assembly-Assemble a defense. With Reaper King blowing up permanents next round, the robots in the mill couldnt stop a Scarecrow smackdown as they took the lead 1-0 with 31 life left. Game Two was a fantastic arms race as while the Scarecrows built up their forces with Door of Destinies, the robots built up an army of Adaptive Automatons with Soul Foundry. With a well-timed Coat of Arms and superior numbers, the mechanimaniacs smashed the straw out of the Scarecrows to level up to 1-1 with 20 life left. Game Three was a close one as the Assembly-Workers formed a quick Urzatron and Urza's Factory combo, but couldnt outrace the Scarecrows who threw out Adaptive Automatons and Scarecrones like they were going out of style. The swarm of high-powered creatures was too much for the BearBots and they capitulated, the Scarecrows reigning supreme 2-1 with 30 life left.

Oh wow... That is the first match where my Phoenixs didn't do much but rely on hidden fireballs. Glad to see Chandra had a bit to do with a win.

I'd like to see my Fiery Cuddly Feathery Birdies pitted against either the Licids or Ooze.

The Pheonixes are definitely tough to beat, and they had pretty even match-ups against my kor deck during playtests, but just outright lost to a turn 1 Hypnox~

Rocknj06 says... #25

That's why they won the Battle Award :).

Femme_Fatale you tested them against your Kor deck? I feel honored. I know it isn't your main deck which is just outright mean, but this version you submitted is downright scary. Me no likey the 8 1cost exile spells in your deck. My fiery birds don't mind dying but exiling is just mean. :D I'm glad they were about evenly matched when you tested. :)

I want to see my lammasu against your horses. Or not really lammasu vs horses. more like Moat vs horses. That one card sort of sums up my entire deck.

Also my satyrs against my moat would be interesting.

FROGS (Infral) vs HORRORS (Femme_Fatale)

Psychofrog 3: Death In The Pond. Game One saw both sides build up forces with a Phyrexian Revoker expertly cancelling a Spore Frog. While the Frogs got stuck on three land however, the Horrors rolled up in a Phyrexian Obliterator with a Spellskite in da trunk, which conducted an dangerous Rapid Hybridization. While the lilypad-lolling Frogs mana screwed of options, they still sent the Obliterator packing before the Horrors hardcast Hypnox and went to town on their froggy faces, taking the lead 1-0 with 16 life remaining. Game Two was a short one, as while a Spore Frog picked away at the Horrors early, his shining frog glory was haunted somewhat by a Reanimated Hypnox on Turn 2, exiling the Frogs hand and then swinging for 8 each round. The little heroic Spore Frog kept poking however in a glorious bout of defiance before sacrificing itself as a martyr to save from a killer blow, which was then further halted by a Crocanura the following round. The mean bad Hypnox was not to be stopped however, carrying the horrible Horrors to a 2-0 win with 10 life left. Amen Spore Frog.

LAMMASU (biggestmtgnerd) vs HORSES (pookypuppy6)

Friendly neigh-bours versus aerial douchenuts, with unbiased commentary from Yours Truly. While the fantastic horses got off to a decently rocket start with a Turn 4 reanimated Thundermare, all hope was lost when the dirty, cheating birds of Moat-buggery utilized their ultimate weapon and drew the thundering steeds of glorious angels to a total standstill. The game from there was your typical Moat standoff until the Lammasu built up enough weird-faced bird backstabbers to stamp past a lone, brave Nightmare for a terrible 1-0 lead with 16 life left. Game Two started with a cheapened Thundermare racing out of the traps in a blaze, but was unjustly sunk down by a stupendously awesome TRIPLE Ghostly Prison played on Turns 3, 4 and 5 respectively. While the horses struggled to wade through the crap, a Hunted Lammasu came pounding in and, with two Norn's Annex added to the mix, the stallions of victory were not victorious but rather committing equine seppuku. The smelly Lammasu buttfarts win 2-0 with 6 life remaining, all told with my brilliant unbiased report.

There was a misplay. Hypnox only exiles their hand if you cast it from your hand. Not if you Reanimate it.

pookypuppy6 says... #39

@Femme_Fatale: Ah whoopsie, I guess the Frogs deserve froggy compensation. Mind you, I really don't think their hand offered much in the way of Hypnox removal at the time, even though the deck certainly has some.
