This challenge is for two types of people: the Old Fogey that soothly misses the good olde days of Magic, before the mischievous age of Miracles, Infect, and Annihilator, and the Young Whippersnapper that wants to know what the game was like when artifacts were brown.

First, let me congratulate fluffybunnypants for winning Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #12- 2003 with his deck Midnight City.

Want to request a challenge? Visit the YODBC Request Page.

For this challenge, we shall be looking back at Mirage Block, the first sets specifically designed as a block of three.

What to do:

  • Build up to two 60-card decks (Thou shalt not count to 61, nor to 59).
  • At least 8 cards must be from Mirage.
  • At least 8 cards must be from Visions.
  • At least 8 cards must be from Weatherlight.
  • The rest may be from any of those three sets.
  • No Sideboard will be used.

Post your deck here by Sunday, August 1st, at which time I shall take all submissions and have a tournament to determine the superlative one. The tournament will be a few rounds of swiss, with the top 4 (or 8 if enough submissions are made) doing single-elimination afterwards.

Restricted List- Fie upon the miscreant to post hither a deck whereinsoever contains a quantity in excess of one copy of a card mentioned forthwith:

Good luck to all and may the best antiquarian win!

P.S. If anyone wants me to ping them when I post a new challenge so you don't miss out, let me know.

sewellius Freewind Falcon saw play in the first 3 rounds, but none of those matchups were against red. Against Mirage tempo, I never saw one in hand, though it would have turned the tables if I could have gotten one.

atreyujames that was a tough matchup. The Dreadnought just proved too hard to find. But no matter, on to Phase 2...

Oh I see, so it was a useful part of the deck, just tough luck on the applicable games. Thanks for letting me know.

Final Results

potatoedoughnut's YODBC13 CounterBurn vs. Azure124's Mirage tempo

G1: CounterBurn's reliance on Undiscovered Paradise for mana early on hinders him, but he still does a good job of disposing of Tempos early plays. Unfortunately, he's tapped out and unable to play counters when Tempo drops Firestorm Hellkite . A last ditch effort to Volcanic Geyser it gets Disrupt ed, and Tempo takes the first game.

G2: CounterBurn does much better this game mana-wise. He's once again tapped out when Firestorm Hellkite arrives, but is able to Boomerang it. When its replayed, a fierce counterwar lets it resolve. Further counterwars keep the dragon alive and prevent Incinerate from shortening CounterBurns lifespan. Ultimately, CounterBurn can't find what it takes to remove the Hellkiten in time, and Tempo takes the tourney.

Mirage tempo wins 2-0

Congratulations Azure124, you are the champion of Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #13!
