This challenge is for two types of people: the Old Fogey that soothly misses the good olde days of Magic, before the mischievous age of Miracles, Infect, and Annihilator, and the Young whippersnapper that wants to know what the game was like when artifacts were brown.

This is the deck which won the previous challenge, Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #14- Combo Winter:
Phyrexian Guys Doing Phyrexian Things
This challenge was suggested by truble.
What to do:
- Build up to two 60-card decks (Thou shalt not count to 61, nor to 59).
- 48 of the cards must be standard legal.
- 10 must be Legacy legal nonland cards that were first printed before 8th edition.
- The final 2 may be from either of those groups.
- No normal Sideboard will be used. However, if you run a card which would access the sideboard (Judgement Wishes, Ring of Ma'ruf ), then you may have a sideboard of up to 5 cards.
Post your deck here by Sunday, October 6th, at which time I shall take all submissions and have a tournament to determine the superlative one. The tournament will be a few rounds of swiss, with the top 4 (or 8 if enough submissions are made) doing single-elimination afterwards.
Banned List- Fie upon the miscreant to post hither a deck whereinsoever contains a card mentioned forthwith:
- Any card thats not allowed in either Standard or Legacy.
- Any land that isnt Standard legal.

in the 48 cards that must be standard legal, does this count the land???

yes I realize that. 48+10+2=60, we're only allowed to have a 60 card deck, so I was asking if the 48 cards of standard are including the land

The lands will have to be from standard abenz419 because the 10 have to be legacy non-lands.

You should post this in the standard forum doinitwrong, because of the nature of this challenge it will get people interested in legacy, though that is up to you if you want to potentially have a lot of decks to do in this match.
Apparently there isn't an easy method to search for legacy only cards before 8th edition potatoedoughnut, so I suggest clicking on the cards tab and then using that as a guide for which expansions were before and after 8th, and then just manually say "does not include" for each expansion 8th and after in the gatherer. Unless someone wants to refute what I couldn't find.

Femme_Fatale good call with the Standard forum, I'll do that sometime soon.
Okay, I didn't anticipate the nightmare searching would be. Here's a Gatherer search for all cards printed pre-8th edition. Legacy-banned cards aren't filtered out, but this will hopefully make a good template to search from.

Soooo many choices to make these decks work better ... I wonder what standard hybrid decks could be made if we base the decks off of the legacy cards instead of buffing existing standard decks. This will be really interesting to see. Ping me for these from now on, not a very heavy legacy player but always enjoyed the older cards.

Hey truble I think you misunderstood the challenge. The old cards have to be from BEFORE 8th. so Stoneforge Mystic and Batterskull for sure don't work

As well there has to be at least 10 but no more than 12 NON_LAND legacy cards.

Well the Reanimator deck is basically done. I think it falls within the guidelines. The Esper Control Deck is going to need to be completely redone. It is amazing how many good cards are from the newer sets!

truble Yeah, the Reanimator was all good when I checked. All you needed to work on was the Esper, so you're all set now.
As for good cards being new, yeah, power creep's a *****.

Damnit truble, I'm going to be making a GW aggro ... also, you can't use Cavern of Souls , it's post rotation with Theros, so nothing from the Innistrad block.

@truble only things from Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze, M14, and Theros are standard legal.

I only play EDH. So I dont know the symbols really well. And Tapped out is not updated yet. When I clicked on cavern it said standard legal... Just a mistake no biggy

I think I've gotten two challenge-legal decks put together, both pretty homebrew-y again. I really don't know ANY of these popular competitive templates that have been coming up.

Lots of playtesting for my first one, knew what I wanted right from the get-go. Works really nicely, and I'm quite proud of it.

This second one was a lot harder to choose, I went from selesnya aggro (which died every single time against truble's GW aggro) to pure azorious control, to RDW, to Gruul Aggro, to golgari shenanigans and then finally to a bant/5 colour sliver aggro deck.

I kinda have to sewellius, as I've never made a Standard deck before, and I don't make very many legacy decks. I playtest against other random decks, sometimes legacy decks sometimes standard decks, the works. I chose a few from the list here to playtest against just get a feel for how the combination of standard plus legacy would work.

Any suggestions on how to search for cards which meet these criteria? Not sure how to search by first printed.
