Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #16- Modern Splash

Challenges and Articles forum

Posted on Jan. 4, 2014, 10:02 a.m. by doinitwrong

This challenge is for two types of people: the Old Fogey that soothly misses the good olde days of Magic, before the mischievous age of Miracles, Infect, and Annihilator, and the Young whippersnapper that wants to know what the game was like when artifacts were brown.

This is the deck with which Femme_Fatale won the previous challenge, Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #15… Standard?:

Dr.Millington, How May I Help You? Playtest

Legacy Femme_Fatale

SCORE: 0 | 0 COMMENTS | 98 VIEWS

This challenge was requested by Dritz.

What to do:

  • Build 1 60-card deck (Thou shalt not count to 61, nor to 59).
  • 48 of the cards must be Legacy legal cards first printed prior to 8th edition (printed with the old card frame).
  • 10 must be Modern legal.
  • The final 2 may be from either of those groups.
  • No normal Sideboard will be used. However, if you run a card which would access the sideboard (Like the Judgment Wishes), then you may have a wishboard of up to 5 cards.

Post your deck here by Sunday, January 19th, at which time I shall take all submissions and have a tournament to determine the superlative one. The tournament will be a few rounds of swiss, with the top 4 (or 8 if enough submissions are made) doing single-elimination afterwards.

Good luck to all and may the best antiquarian win!

If anyone wants me to ping them when I post a new challenge so you don't miss out, let me know.

Help Wanted

If anyone would be willing to help out by playing a match or two each round and emailing me the writeup, let me know.

Next challenge should be "aggro decks only": no counterspells and no cards with a CMC cost higher then 3.

doinitwrong says... #3

Apoptosis I've got something like that in the works, but not until probably #19. The next challenge, however, is going to be utter hell.

cabal seems that you name the card and target the player at the same time im not 100% sure on this but i have had this ruling go for me at tourneys before as name a card comes before the targeting

Utter hell to play, utter hell fun, utter hell bad, or utter hell to build?

March 5, 2014 4:48 p.m.

doinitwrong says... #6

Utter hell to play, but utter hell (fun) to build and watch unfold.

Complete and utter chaos. I like the sound of it.

Absinthman says... #8

@Azure124: Then the ruling at the tourney was wrong. See Cabal Therapy on its Gatherer page: LINK

You name the card during resolution, then your opponent reveals their hand and discards if appropriate. There is no way for your opponent to do anything between you naming the card and them discarding.

March 27, 2014 4:26 p.m.

Who's teasing? I'm mad proud of the monstrosity that I created for this challenge and I'd like to see how it ends.

My bunny pants are wicked fluffy.

March 27, 2014 5:14 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #15

I would like to see how it ends too good sir. In the meantime can I interest you in taking a gander at a deck I'm working on? Hark the Herald , I'm building around a white core, and looking to fine tune it. Right now the deck is W/B/r, but I'm not sure whether it's the correct direction. As long as that white core is intact, I'm open to suggestions. Trying to satisfy my inner Johnny while maintaining that inner Spike and all that...

...perhaps someone else might "Do it right" in the meantime while we wait... looks in the direction of doinitwrong innocently

doinitwrong says... #23

Sorry guys. I suck. A lot. I guess I just fell off the radar without even finishing the match I was working on. I think I was expecting smash10101 to do a match, and was waiting for him it post it before I posted mine. After waiting for a while, I stopped checking the site as often, eventually stopping altogether. I'm really sorry. I'll try and finish this challenge as quickly as I can.

For the matches that had a game with mistakes, I decided to just redo the whole match:

Apoptosis's Flare, imprison, and burn YODBC#16 vs. GoldGhost012's YODC #16: Attack First, Ask Questions Never

G1: A T2 Peacekeeper thoroughly disgruntles Attack. Attack is stuck at 2 lands for a while, meaning his board is full of cheap goblins and his hand is full of expensive ones. Right after Attack finds Skirk Fire Marshal with Goblin Matron , Flare goes off. He Earthquake s for 3, clearing the board and preventing Fire Marshal from activating should he be played. Flare then throws down a Mana Flare and tutors for Candelabra of Tawnos . Next turn, he plays another Flare, the Candelabra, and Banefire s for 25.

G2: Attack laughs off Winter Orb with Goblin Lackey . The Orb hurts Flare more as he can't get enough mana to take out Krenko, Mob Boss , who continues the onslaught with the help of Goblin Lookout , soon getting the win.

G3: Peacekeeper holds the goblins at bay until Moat arrives. Skirk Fire Marshal blows the field, trading 4 pacified goblins for a Sylvan Caryatid . Flare throws down a Candelabra and Mana Flare , with a second Flare in hand, but is 1 mana shy of getting the win. Attack topdecks a second Goblin Grenade , plays a goblin, and double Grenades for the victory.

YODC #16: Attack First, Ask Questions Never wins 2-1

fluffybunnypants's turbo-bloom vs. Azure124's U/W delver yodbc 16

G1: Bloom gets the mana for Dream Halls relatively quickly. Delver gets stuck with 1 land, preventing him from winning the counter war with Counterspell . Bloom promptly Banefire s for lethal.

G2: Wasteland wreaks havoc on Bloom's mana base, but Bloom topdecks enough Islands to play Show and Tell . Again, Delver loses the counter war and the match.

turbo-bloom wins 2-0

Apoptosis The Fire Marshal went off during GoldGhost's turn; it wouldn't have helped you.

GoldGhost012 It was really close. I was about to go Goblin Chieftain -> Krenko, Mob Boss -> make tokens-> Blow Fire Marshal again to force a draw, but then I realized I could just win with the Grenades.

Top 4 Results:

heuertag's YODC#16 - HeuerTag vs. fluffybunnypants's turbo-bloom

G1: T2 Iona, Shield of Emeria naming blue makes Bloom cry.

G2: Bloom fails to topdeck the third mana needed to combo off on turn 2. Heuer gets another T2 Iona.

YODC#16 - HeuerTag wins 2-0. Of the 11 games this deck has played, Iona has singlehandedly won 8 of them.

truble's UBG_CHALLENGE vs. GoldGhost012's YODC #16: Attack First, Ask Questions Never

G1: Goblin Lackey quickly gets out Krenko, Mob Boss . UBG can't find a way to overcome Attack's ever-growing board presence and succumbs.

G2: UBG is able to deal with every early threat Attack throws at him. When Blood Moon gets cast for a third time and finally resolves, however, the responses end, allowing Krenko, Mob Boss and Goblin Piledriver take UBG down.

YODC #16: Attack First, Ask Questions Never wins 2-0

Final Result

GoldGhost012's YODC #16: Attack First, Ask Questions Never vs. heuertag's YODC#16 - HeuerTag

G1: Attacks early onslaught is swiftly quelled by Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite . Iona, Shield of Emeria also arrives to hasten the beating, though this doesn't count as one of her singlehanded wins.

G2: T2 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite doesnt let Attack do anything. Sphinx of the Steel Wind arrives to accelerate the endgame.

YODC#16 - HeuerTag wins 2-0

Was wondering if I would be called out on that... Well, I called the result. Meh. I kinda feel like trying to argue that they're similar, but I'm tired and that'd make me sound too much like an idiot. At the end of the day, I knew I could not win.

Apoptosis says... #47

So what's the next challenge going to be?

June 1, 2014 9:56 a.m.

doinitwrong says... #48

Apoptosis I'm not sure yet. There was a request I was planning on doing, but I think I'll instead do a simpler one while I get back in the swing of doing these challenges. Maybe that "aggro decks only" you said earlier this thread, or something similar.

June 1, 2014 10:38 a.m.

Apoptosis says... #49

doinitwrong I can probably help run some of the matches as long as decks using older card sets that I'm not familiar with are not too difficult to pilot.

What was the other idea? I can't remember anything that I said before, but here are two suggestions:

  1. "When worlds collide." Decks can be built from any block, but can only contain cards from that block (e.g. Innistrad, Theros, etc.)
  2. Tribal. Deck has to have a tribal theme (goblin, elf, zombie, angel, demon, etc.) I'm not sure what the rules would have to be in regards to the use of Lords, how many non-tribal cards would be allowed, etc.
June 1, 2014 11:29 a.m.

Absinthman says... #50

Here're a few a suggestions of my own:

"Enemies of Old": Only pre-8th cards allowed (no modern or other splash), decks must be of two enemy colors (U/R, B/W, etc.).
"Sophie's Choice": Only pre-8th cards allowed (no modern or other splash). Players must choose wisely when building their decks, because they are only allowed three nonland cards of which there must be 4-of-a-kind in their decks (4 is mandatory). Other nonland cards can only be there once (or maybe up to twice if that seems too strict).
