This challenge is for the Ancient Hellkite that soothly misses the good olde days of Magic, before the mischievous age of Miracles, Infect, and Annihilator.

First, let me congratulate TheLameSauce for winning Ye Olde Deckbuilding Challenge #3 with his deck Clever Named Deck. Will this be the week someone finally dethrones him?

For this challenge, we shall be using the first set to feature multicolored cards, Legends.

What to do:

  • Build up to two 60-card decks (Thou shalt not count to 61, nor to 59).
  • With the exception of basic lands, use only cards from Legends.
  • No Sideboard will be used.

Post your deck(s) here by Friday, May 17th, at which time I'll take all submissions and have a tournament to determine the superlative one. He or she who submits the champion deck will receive a +1 to each of his or her decks.

Banned List- Fie upon the miscreant to post hither a deck whereinsoever contains a card mentioned forthwith:

Good luck and may the best antiquarian win.

Alright, here are my submissions. I'm glad we can have up to two submissions, because I have such a hard time going with just one strategy... I also think more decks makes the challenge more interesting.

Submission #1: Gravity Burn

Submission #2: Legion of the Master

Due to real-life stuff, I won't be able to do the tournament on friday, so the deadline for all decklists is now Sunday the 19th.

Round 1 Results

Azure124's Angus Mackenzie stall gets a Bye.

sewellius's Legion of the Master vs. herob33t's Three color run

G1: In this battle of the Bants, Killer Bees give Color an early advantage before Winter Blast subdues them for good. The beating isn't over, however, as Whirling Dervish goes to work on Legion while Karakas and Boomerang keep his board devoid of creatures.

G2: Clergy of the Holy Nimbus and Kismet give Color an early advantage. Legion can't get the right mana colors, and what few creatures he plays are greeted with Remove Soul . Again, Whirling Dervish provides the finishing beats.

Three color run wins 2-0

Dritz's Old as Dirt vs. sewellius's Gravity Burn

G1: Wall of Earth and Darkness keep Dirt from getting attackers through with creatures early on. However, out of Darkness and lacking the white for Holy Day or Moat , Gravity falls prey to Mountain Yeti and Ivory Guardians , both of which are wielding Spirit Link . With one turn left, Gravity finally topdecks a Plains and stalls with Holy Day . Unfortunately, he is unable to find a second Plains for Moat before running out of fog effects and succumbing to the onslaught.

G2: Dirt takes an early advantage with Thunder Spirit s and Crimson Manticore s, and Gravity can only find 1 blocker which proves insufficient. The game ends, like the previous, with Gravity 1 Plains shy of a saving Moat .

Old as Dirt wins 2-0

Round 2 Results

Dritz's Old as Dirt gets a Bye.

Azure124's Angus Mackenzie stall vs. herob33t's Three color run

G1: In yet another Bant-Bant matchup, Color's early assaults are met by Angus Mackenzie himself. With the game at a stalemate, Mackenzie builds up a creature base to prepare for a lethal Sword of the Ages . Eventually the Sword goes off in lethal fashion, fueled primarily by Killer Bees and Arcades Sabboth .

G2: An early swarm of Emerald Dragonfly s meets Winter Blast . Mackenzie's inability to get a Plains, however, prevents him from playing his namesake card before a renewed offensive kills him.

G3: Both players build early board presences. Sylvan Library helps Mackenzie fish out the right lands for Moat , though the presence of multiple flyers on both sides makes it somewhat moot. During the stalemate that follows, Mackenzie manages to kill and capture all of Color's flyers with Winter Blast and Rubinia Soulsinger . This allows Mac to swing for half of Color's life total and Sword of the Ages the other half.

Angus Mackenzie stall wins 2-1

Finals Result

Azure124's Angus Mackenzie stall vs. Dritz's Old as Dirt

G1: Dirt seems to have answers to whatever Mackenzie throws at him in the form of Arena of the Ancients , Spinal Villain , and Chain Lightning . Mackenzie can't find an answer to multiple Mountain Yeti s and succumbs.

G2: A lot of Defender prevents major combats early on. Eventually, Pyrotechnics and Disharmony clear Mackenzie's board. Mac is unfortunately unable to rebuild his board presence before Ivory Guardians and Crimson Manticore overwhelm him.

Old as Dirt wins 2-0
