DePietro and Channel?

The recent spoilage of new cards with the Channel ability has made me wonder about a Channel deck helmed by Ghost of Ramirez DePietro.

This leads to a few questions, though:

  1. Who would be the best partner in terms of abilities and/or colors for this strategy?

  2. What cards already exist to support this theme?

I would absolutely recommend Tormod, the Desecrator. I have a deck with him and Esior, Wardwing Familiar that I love. Some standout cards being Syr Konrad, the Grim, Desecrated Tomb, and anything with the mechanic Flashback. There are a few great mini black enchantments that can recur stuff but I forget the names at the moment.

Oh! Bone Miser, Lazotep Chancellor, Mystic Redaction and Feast of Sanity are great for the discard theme, too.

This has made me realize I’ve been reading Ghost of Ramirez DePietro wrong this entire time. I thought his trigger was tied to the player that was dealt damage.

Well anyways my top pick for a partner would be Tormod, the Desecrator for all the graveyard shenanigans (i.e Living Death) and discard value.

Some high synergy cards would be:

Looking at channel tho there seems to be a higher density in temur so you would have access to better ramp and can do wheel/card draw affects. So perhaps Tana, the Bloodsower with:

  • Rielle, the Everwise

  • Brallin, Skyshark Rider  Flip
  • The Locust God + Wheels
  • Conspiracy Theorist
  • Mizzix's Mastery + Lier, Disciple of the Drowned
  • Glint-Horn Buccaneer
  • Surly Badgersaur
    • Otherwise you can go for purate tribal in izzet with Breeches, Brazen Plunderer or monoblue with Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator

    Thanks for the input! I'm liking the look of Tormod so far, but I guess it kinda depends how many new Channel cards get printed and in what colors. If we don't get enough to function with just Dimir, a commander like Ravos, Soultender could be good ig.

    Partnering with Tana, the Bloodsower also opens up the opportunity to use cards with the Bloodrush ability, expanding on the theme you want to abuse with the Channel ability.

    Another option to give Pietro more evasion is Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa. But that will limit your pool of Bloodrush cards moreso.

    bushido_man96 That reminds me of an article I read on here about cards that give you affects without actually casting a card and i think that could be a janky premise for a cmdr deck.

    Try to use as many affects like channel, bloodrush, Simian Spirit Guide, etc. Then maybe also include epic cards like Eternal Dominion.
