Eldrazi EDH Help
Commander Deck Help forum
Posted on Jan. 26, 2016, 8:10 a.m. by Hyrot
So i have all the Oath of the Gatewatch cards that came out, bought a shit ton of boxes to make sure. I was thinking of making an Eldrazi beater deck with just enough removal to help keep them on the field. Any help and ideas are welcomed.
i was thinking of using Kozilek, the Great Distortion
and yes it is focused on beat with big creatures.

kozilek seems like a good commander , but mabye run a 5 color commander that has all around good abilites so you can have access to all the eldrazi instead of just colorless but its up to you. oh and run Spawnsire of Ulamog and buy a huge box of eldrazi and say GG to you opponent :)

You realize about 75% of the new eldrazi are not legal in a Kozilek, the Great Distortion EDH deck right? There are exactly 24, including Kozilek, from BFZ block that can legally be run.

Yeah, what colors and what commander? Will you use Kozilek, the Great Distortion? He'll give you access to counterspells without blue in your deck.
If you don't run Kozilek, Child of Alara might be a good idea to run. When it dies, it won't destroy Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, leaving your board at a very good state.
Eye of Ugin is a must. So is All Is Dust + It That Betrays .
Titan's Presence is a nice bit of removal that fits well in the Eldrazi theme.
I can't really give you much more until I know who the commander is :/

but the new colorless symbol still means there technically colorless cards arent they?
January 26, 2016 8:37 a.m.
TheHelvault says... #8
euananddalesaccount Spawnsire of Ulamog will only bring in Eldrazi from your sideboard. I tried that with a huge box of Ulamog's Crusher and I wasn't allowed except the 15 in the sideboard.
January 26, 2016 8:38 a.m.
TheHelvault says... #9
Even then, in edh, you can only have 1 of any one Eldrazi in your sideboard. The rules still apply there, sadly :(
January 26, 2016 8:40 a.m.
Gidgetimer says... #11
Yes you can use ones with the colorless symbol, but not any with a colored symbol and Devoid. Color identity is different than color.
January 26, 2016 8:44 a.m.
euananddalesaccount says... #12
or at least 1 of each of the super OP eldrazi
January 26, 2016 8:44 a.m.
TheHelvault says... #13
euananddalesaccount they're "colorless", yes, but the color identity in the CMC is what defines its legal color in commander. A creature with CMC would be colorless, but a creature with CMC and Devoid is still "Blue".
January 26, 2016 8:48 a.m.
TheHelvault says... #14
In the EDH rulings, you can only produce mana in your commander's color identity. would turn to when an Island would be tapped.
January 26, 2016 8:49 a.m.
euananddalesaccount says... #15
yeah but what i was meaning was that the new colorless and generic mana are the same in color identity right?
January 26, 2016 8:51 a.m.
Gidgetimer says... #16
Small correction, CMC is converted mana cost. It is simply the numeric total of all they symbols in the mana cost. Mana cost is the number printed in the upper right hand corner of the card.
January 26, 2016 8:57 a.m.
TheHelvault says... #17
euananddalesaccount let's say the commander is Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. His color identity is in generic mana. This can be paid with any color, or Colorless mana, just like how you can tap Shimmering Grotto, aka Unknown Shores, for Colorless to play a Helm of the Gods or other colorless 1-drop. So yes, if a commander is colorless, then the symbol can be in the deck.
January 26, 2016 8:57 a.m. Edited.
As Gidgetimer stated, Kozilek is not legal in EDH.I'll look through my stacks and figure out a new commander.
January 26, 2016 8:59 a.m.
Gidgetimer says... #20
They changed the rule about mana outside your commander's color identity changing to colorless. You can now produce mana in colors outside your commander's color identity if you somehow acquire a card that produces it but you are still unable to include cards outside their color identity.

Deckologist says... #25
Ok after researching you can play the new kozilek in edh Hyrot however all of your creatures must be colorless. Devoid creatures don't count of course.
January 26, 2016 11:06 a.m.
Gidgetimer says... #26
He is, I only said that most of the new eldrazi are not legal in a Kozilek deck. IDK where the "he is not legal" came from.
January 26, 2016 11:23 a.m.
Deckologist - so you're saying that absolutely no Devoid creatures are allowed? Why is that?
So artifact creatures and older Eldrazi are playable, am i correct?
Again, I am new to this and want to learn everything I can.
January 26, 2016 11:24 a.m.
What if i want to play Mina and Denn, Wildborn as my commander. How can I make her work in my Eldrazi EDH?
January 26, 2016 11:26 a.m.
In my research, my understanding is this.... If you run a colorless General (Kozliek, Ulamog, Even Karn, the Silver Golem), all creatures and mana needs to be colorless. Not devoid. so every mana used has to be able to produce colorless mana. Therefore basic mana can not be used and devoid creatures cannot be used in a colorless general deck. You can use artifact creatures and artifacts since their CMC is colorless as well. Treat colorless as a 6th mana "color". That should help ease it up. If you are wanting to run some of the new Eldrazi cards that are devoid you will need to run a 5 color general.

Gidgetimer says... #30
Basic mana? I think you are confusing lands with mana.
January 26, 2016 11:56 a.m.
Deckologist says... #31
Hyrot in EDH you can only put spells in the deck that are in your commanders colors. so you could not run Fling in a deck that had Azami, Lady of Scrolls as the commander but you could run it in a Melek, Izzet Paragon edh deck. Kozilek, the Great Distortion is colorless so you cannot play any spells that have a colored mana symbol as part of the casting cost OR as an ability. and example of this would be Mystical Teachings. Its flashback cost involves black so you would have to run it in a deck where the commander has black and blue in its mana cost such as Sygg, River Cutthroat. With kozilek even though the creatures are considered colorless because of devoid (if they have it) they still have colored mana in their cost. Also note that artifacts like Obelisk of Esper cannot be used in kozilek because it has the mana symbols as part of the ability.
January 26, 2016 12:17 p.m.
DECKOLOGIST - thank you for clearing that up. This new info makes things a little more difficult to construct my eldrazi deck.
January 26, 2016 12:27 p.m.
Deckologist says... #33
until they release a 5 color eldrazi or a 5 color changling commander your best bet is to either run Progenitus or Child of Alara
January 26, 2016 12:34 p.m.
Deckologist - as long as i have child as my commander then i can have all the eldrazi i want in my deck as my creatures, right?
And what spells from the Oath Set can i use to compliment my creatures ability to stick. What kind of removal?
January 26, 2016 1:13 p.m.
nobu_the_bard says... #35
Yes; Child of Alara has all five colors in its color identity, so you effectively have no color restrictions.
I haven't played Oath real thoroughly so to suggest much from it directly. I know there's some counterspells; those will help you shut down the inevitable boardwipes people try on you.
January 26, 2016 2:16 p.m.
TheHelvault says... #36
From Oath, you can use Unnatural Endurance. It'll cost your creature and regenerate it, which is one of the best ways to protect it.
Spatial Contortion and Warping Wail are my favorite cards from the set. I suggest those. Mirrorpool too ;)
Spawnsire of Ulamog is fun, but be prepared to go on a hunt for the best ETB effect Eldrazi you can find.
Sounds like it's going to be a very flavorful deck to build!
January 26, 2016 3:16 p.m.
I saw an Eldrazi deck already built, Kozilek Commander.
Can i use this and just switch out some cards to make a beater deck??
January 26, 2016 3:23 p.m.
Hyrot Yes, but part of the fun is coming up with your own ideas. good luck.
January 26, 2016 7:32 p.m.
oh i know that but i like having starting points. helps me know the direction i like to go.

As far as Spawnsire of Ulamog is concerned the cards come from outside of the game. Not from exile basically eldrazi cards from your collection... the cards must not be on the ban list like emurakul and within the color identity of your commander. If your playing at a card shop you may be limited to a side board of 15... however you can go nits in casual... but good luck no one will want to play with you if you drop 50 eldrazi cards. If someone did that id scoop and not give them the satisfaction of owning me
January 28, 2016 8:38 p.m.
Deckologist says... #41
Scooping means they owned you hardest of them all. It means that they didn't beat you but instead made you beat yourself. Remember that. Scooping is never a good option. Play a game through to the end no matter the outcome.

Officially, Spawnsire's second ability does absolutely nothing in EDH. Unofficially, it's up to the playgroup to decide how it's handled.
Hyrot, I have a suggestion for you; same as I've told people who wanted to make a deck with one of the new titans. Run Oona, Queen of the Fae as your commander so you have access to tutors, counterspells, and all the devoid eldrazi in and . Your commander can help provide fuel for processors, and you can use tutors to go find your Ulamogs and Kozileks (and anything else you need) when it's appropriate.

ComradeJim270 says... #43
Oh, and if you drop Forerunner of Slaughter and Nettle Drone off of Spawnsire, give the Drone haste and drop a couple hundred eldrazi after that? Should ping everybody to death. Obviously it requires you to be in these colors if your playgroup won't let you cast ones outside your color identity.
January 29, 2016 12:23 a.m.
ComradeJim270 i might pick up Oona, Queen of the Fae for that utility. I always loved making people remove cards from their decks.
January 29, 2016 8:07 a.m.
Rakdos, Lord of Riots is a good one for eldrazi, using cards like Molten Nursery, Flayer Drone and Nettle Drone you can do some cool stuff like dumping consecutively larger eldrazi, if you're willing to run Cloudstone Curio you can go infinite though you might not want to do that.
otherwise cheat in large eldrazi for value sac and recycle using Pawn of Ulamog and Sifter of Skulls with Skullclamp and Smothering Abomination
anyway hope you got some ideas
January 29, 2016 11:25 p.m.
Hawko0313 your suggestions are pretty spot on with how i want to cast my eldrazi
euananddalesaccount says... #2
