Help optimizing my Wilhelt Precon
Commander Deck Help forum

Hello, I own a Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver precon, with some upgrades like Gravecrawler , Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Plague Belcher, Bastion of Remembrance and Noxious Ghoul.
I'm prob looking to make it mostly a combo deck but I'm not sure.
I normally play with another 3 friends that play Sigarda, Host of Herons that I can't deal with except with Noxious Ghoul, a full ramp/eldrazy enourmous monsters and extra turns and the 3rd one just bought the new spirit precon that just came out.
I really struggle being competitive with the first 2 players and I think that only by going for game winning combos I can deal with them.
Looking for new ideas or cards to exchange on my deck.
Thx u all
K1ngMars in the combo part I think the same, also using Acererak the Archlich. I was thinking of using some tutors if going the combo route.
I just don'y know how powerfull it is! I just think of using it because in theory I kinda don't care what my opponet does, I just go get my parts and win! Since I don't own board wipes I can deal with the Sygarda user.
I also tought about counters, just don't know that with using combo/tutor/counter, the zombie hoard aspect will be lost......
The creature route is what I like but I struggle so much atm against those 2 players that sometimes it can get frustrating to do everything your deck offers and allways lose. RIP
Not looking for smash them every game, but looking for a good fighting chance!

I've got a combo based Gisa and Geralf deck that might offer you some ideas:

Looks really interesting.
Has combos and also fighting potential.
I just don't know if it has around the same power level as the sygarda or the eldrazys deck.
What do you think bushido_man96?

In case you need a board wipe that is kind of inevitable and doesn't care about Indestructible, in-sacrificable and whatever else these decks might have as protection, maybe consider Massacre Girl? Not a zombie, but very powerful for sure.

MaxymuzGG, to be honest, I'm not really great at judging power levels. If you runs some tutors to get pieces, it could really be consistent in setting up a combo. But I've got so many potential combos in the deck, it probably doesn't need that many tutors.
Wihlelt would probably make the deck better, because his ability would allow the deck to sustain a board state while sacrificing for value, providing even more sac fodder for more value. Remember, when you are playing against annoying creatures that are hard to remove, player removal is creature removal....

Hey MaxymuzGG, feel free to check out my Wilhelt combo deck. I’ve optimized it as much as possible for a competitive EDH (cEDH). Maybe you can pick up some ideas.

Hey, zAzen7977 I knew most of your combos but I saw a lot of other interesting stuff in there.
There is a lot of really expensive things in there but there is also cheaper things I saw that I really liked.
I gotta find what would help my deck the most and get a few cards!!

When dealing with crap like Sigarda and Eldrazi, you may need some mass exile effects, or effects that give -1 counters. Massacre Girl may prove useful.

I was thinking of getting Damnation,Toxic Delugeand maybe Extinction Event I already have Noxious Ghoul and Aetherspouts...
I could use land/enchant that remove hexproof, or run a bit of counters?

If you can afford to swing it, Shadowspear would be a good piece of tech to run.

Other options for non-targeted removal besides the ones you have already mentioned are Cyclonic Rift and The Meathook Massacre. Less expensive options include Bontu's Last Reckoning or Black Sun's Zenith.
For targeted exile, Deadly Rollick is the most efficient with Wilhelt. Baleful Mastery or Oubliette are affordable options.
My favorite counterspells with Wilhelt are the ones that can be cast even when tapped out, including Pact of Negation and Fierce Guardianship.
Another strategy is increasing the speed that you can assemble a game-winning combo, with more efficient tutors or mana rocks, which unfortunately are expensive but necessary to be more competitive. If you can assemble an infinite combo, it doesn’t matter if your opponent casts Sigarda or Emrakul or whatever. And if you can’t stick the combo fast enough, tutors will increase your odds of finding a solution to a bad situation.

I forgot to mention Force of Despair, another budget removal option.

I've thought about the non target removal you mention.
I think I'm going to try and get combo and tutors piece by piece slowly....
Thinking of getting Phyrexian Altar, Poppet Stitcher Flip and some tutors...
For creatures maybe Necroduality, Champion of the Perished and Relentless Dead

Like K1ngMars mentioned in the first post, counterspells are great forms of non-targeted removal, as well, and most of them are relatively cheap in comparison to a lot of the other answers that have been presented here. A nice dose of both options should help improve your chances of winning in your meta.

I would definitely suggest you to include the recently printed Poppet Factory, as it allows Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver to generate a zombie every time you sacrifice a zombie, due to the fact that the Decayed ability gets overwritten. Besides, Gravecrawler too allows for infinite loops with Phyrexian Altar and a permanent dealing damage triggered by creature deaths, like Bastion of Remembrance.
To support the combo route, which could definitely help in keeping up your game, I would also suggest to add some tutors, to help you smooth out your hand and always find the right cards at the right time. Such cards could range from Lim-Dul's Vault to Scheming Symmetry or Demonic Tutor, mainly depending on your budget. Remember, tutors don't necessarily need to be 60 bucks to be good. They are always good.
Apart from that though, another proactive way to stop you opponents into their tracks is to simply use counterspells. Dimir offers some of the best control magic available, amongst which I'll recall: Counterspell, Countersquall, Arcane Denial, Wash Away, Disdainful Stroke... The choices are endless and should be suited to what are the main threats you wish to answer in your playgroup. Overall, 5 counterspells should be enough to step up your game a bit in terms of interaction, without making your deck a control-focused spellslinger deck.
As a last note, I'll link you the deck of one of my friends, which I've helped with in upgrading. It's a comboless Wilhelt with quite a strong presnece in games, hopefully it may be of some inspiration to you.
