Hi all,
Brand new to MTG, just started playing with a few friends who are also brand new to the game. None of us really know what we're doing yet tbh. Just trying to make a deck that is a combo of a zombie army and sheoldred, the apocolypse. My concern is if I don't get Sheoldred out in time, all my cards that make others draw cards are kind of a waste? Any help would be appreciated!

First: welcome aboard! I’m always super-excited when new folks give magic a shot! Second: I’m a strong believer in building a deck so that it isn’t too reliant on one specific card, even the commander. I would look at how you want the deck to work overall, for starters. If you want a primarily “damage your opponents through card draw” then you might want to adjust the whole deck (looking at things like Nekusar, the Mindrazer). If you like zombies, which seems to be the case, I would recommend looking at all your zombies to see the different ways they work together (triggers when they die, triggers when they deal damage, bringing them back from the graveyard, etc). And don’t lose track of their easy strength: bulldozing your enemies under piles of zombies! One of the big challenges with magic, is there is a LOT going on; a million options. There is a ton of fun to be had in fine-tuning a specialized machine of a deck, but that comes with the risk of someone monkeywrenching it with a single card. I love the idea of “drawing sheoldred will be a wonderful, force-multiplier surprise”... I worry about the idea of “I have to draw sheoldred or else my deck won’t work”. This is a lot of typing, so I apologize for that. I always catch myself wishing I could talk to you folks at a LGS or restaurant or something for these threads. It would be so much easier lol.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you're saying (most of it anyways:)). I bought a few booster packs and got Sheoldred, being such a cool card it's just so tempting to add her to the deck. But as you say, I think my initial fears are correct: such a risk if I don't pull her early or she gets killed/removed before I can play all my forced draw cards. Thanks again for the help!

Regarding Sheoldred: She's a house even without any additional "forced card draw", so you could basically just leave her in as a powerhouse card that will help you deal damage.
Wilhelt is a really powerful commander, and I don't see an end to new support at any point in the future, so he'll just become and better. I'll ha mve a further look at the list to maybe suggest more.
