Should Every Commander Set Be Related to the “Main” Set of the Year?

The past several Commander sets have been related to the "main" sets of the years in which they were released (i.e., by having the face cards of each deck be legendary creatures from the plane of the set), which is an interesting idea, but I hope that it does not become a regular practice for this series, since I prefer it when the Commander sets stand on their own.
What does everyone else say about this? Will every Commander set from now on be related to the "main" set of that year, or will WotC do this only on occasion?

MagicMarc, I like the idea, but I do not wish for every Commander set to do that, because it prevents WotC from introducing legendary creatures from planes other than the "main" plane of that year.

On the fence really. On one hand it offers an opportunity for more story and characters there were no room for in the main set. It also seems the slipped a new keyword into the latest ones too that was not in the main set. On the other I was hoping they would pull.more obscure characters from MTG history and/or new versions of popular characters as they have in the past seeing as its not feasible in your typical standard set.

I agree with both of you from a personal level. Since they do not have a lot of product that lets them stray from the main then it would be nice for stuff like what you talk about to appear in the commander product.
I just think from a purely marketing perspective it makes sense to stick with the main set guiding the builds for the commander decks.

I think that they shouldn't be part of it. I like when we get the super old caracters like
Edgar Markov
or
Volrath, the Shapestealer

I don’t like how the commanders are related to the set.

I’m torn on the concept of commander in general. On the one hand, I feel as though EDH was something of a grab at playing magic “the old way” which largely involved terrible cards, strange house rules, and a complete lack of formality (especially from WotC). Formalizing it with Commander sort of deflated that balloon, but it also changed the format into something that a brand new player could jump right into. More players is better (I’ve had to re-orient myself with that a lot recently) so I’m general I think it’s better to have the commander precons match up to all the rest of the printed materials and whatever. I really like the idea of strange characters popping up from unseen planes, though. Totally unconnected oddballs could be a blast, and I don’t just mean characters like that mysterious anime stranger planeswalker from that recent set (who I guess was “obviously” some other planeswalker we were expecting) I mean characters that don’t have any connection to current stories and simply refer to backgrounds. I truly wish that kIDs ThESe DayS could experience an almost completely open-ended scenario like we got to play in, giving your imagination acres of running room. I think that’s probably another thread for later, though.

Another player clearly had the same concern as me, since they asked Mark Rosewater about it, and Rosewater responded by saying that he believes that WotC can focus on both types of products, which pleases me.

I think it's a smart idea to have them be related to the main set of the year. I think that new players will relate better if their introduction to the game may be with the same set. Or sets recent enough that this makes them familiar with the cards in the commander sets and more likely to spend and get a deck.
