Commander Deck Help forum
Posted on Feb. 15, 2016, 9 p.m. by Hon35tAb3
I want to make a commander deck that uses basic lands as tools and the win condition.. I have no clue which commander to use with this theme.. I definitely need suggestions for a commander, but I also want to add more cards to the deck.. Here is what I have so far:
Treasure Hunt will allow me to get most of my land cards.. With Excavation and Wheel of Sun and Moon I can cycle lands through my library and back to my hand.. Manabond can be used to put all the lands in my hand onto the battlefield.. Sterling Grove is for protection..
Some mechanics I think I want to focus on are:
Cumulative upkeep
Sacrifice
Discard
Landfall
Since I want a high land to spell ratio I have a few problems.. Early game my board is open so I need some protection or life gain.. I need ways to maximize Treasure Hunt or other cards like it.. Some reusable card draw will be needed.. I'm sure there are other issues to work out..
Any help is greatly appreciated!

The three cards you listed require a Bant general if you want to use all of them at the same time. Here's link to a gatherer search for all Bant legends
From what I can see, none of them really contribute to the theme you're looking for. The best thing I can suggest would be to get a commander that can either interact with lands, or do something with them.
Some examples include Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, Karametra, God of Harvests, and Titania, Protector of Argoth
I think one of the better routes for you to take is Titania land sacrifice. There are quite a few cards that came in 2014's green commander precon that can help your strategy, like Sylvan Safekeeper

Hon35tAb3,
+1 on Omnath, Locus of Rage.
A few others to consider though: Mina and Denn, Wildborn; Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Hazezon Tamar.
You can look to things like Abundance and Amulet of Vigor + Perilous Forays as kind of the Land version of Treasure Hunt.

You could do Mina and Denn, Wildborn and combo it with a Glacial Chasm for protection from things.

From experience Omnath, Locus of Rage is super fun. Many of the staples for it are just ramp spells, so it's a not overly expensive deck. It's also fun to punish players who wrath with the lighting bolt ability
If you're going for extreme land-to-spell ratio; try Maelstrom Wanderer... Consisting of Deceiver Exarch, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, and 97 lands lol

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I may not be able to do what I want with this since it does require a bant commander like scopesightzx mentioned.. Hazezon Tamar is probably the only commander that fits what I am trying to go for, thanks clayperce.. The other commanders look fun, but they don't quite fit my intentions.. Raging_Squiggle I will definitely have to use Glacial Chasm.. I will make sure to post a deck list when I figure it out

Hon35tAb3,
OK, I love Haz' but there are a bunch of other options too. Lemme do a little research ...
In the meantime though, here are some of my favorite Haz' decks here on T/O :-)

Go 5c so you're not limited by color. Use Child of Alara to clear the board if things aren't going your way

There's a girl that occasionally comes to our lgs for the Sunday commander tournaments and plays a $4k five-color land destruction deck. It's incredibly effective, winning pretty much every time she comes out.

greyninja, it's important to note that in order for the board wipe to occur from Child of Alara, you must allow your commander to go to the graveyard instead of the command zone in order for the "die" trigger to happen. So you will only get it off one time and will have to find a method of returning your commander to the command zone from the graveyard. Otherwise, the Child never touches the graveyard.

Hon35tAb3,
Going back to scopesightzx's original thoughts on Bant, I'm thinking Roon of the Hidden Realm is worth another look. You can run the cards you mentioned above, and also get powerful Flicker effects from Sad Robot and others like Sun Titan, Farhaven Elf, and Wood Elves.
For some examples, check out Abe Sargent's deck over at StarCityGames and Hugadarn's deck Roooons many realms here at T/O.
You could also do Derevi, Empyrial Tactician with Untap effects on cards like Skyward Eye Prophets and Knight of the Reliquary + Retreat to Coralhelm .
Or even Rafiq of the Many, using Landfall equipment like Adventuring Gear, Explorer's Scope, Slab Hammer, and Sword of the Animist :-)
Finally, though I'm sure I missed some, here's all the non-Bant options I can think of (many already mentioned above):
- U: Meloku the Clouded Mirror; Patron of the Moon
- B: Korlash, Heir to Blackblade; Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
- R: Maraxus of Keld
- G: Azusa, Lost but Seeking; Kamahl, Fist of Krosa; Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer; Nissa, Vastwood Seer Flip; Titania, Protector of Argoth
- WU: Brago, King Eternal
- WG: Karametra, God of Harvests
- RG: Borborygmos Enraged; Mina and Denn, Wildborn; Omnath, Locus of Rage
- WUB: Dakkon Blackblade
- WRG: Hazezon Tamar

Raging_Squiggle oh you're totally right, but with the color pie at your disposal there are a bazillion options. Footsteps of the Goryo is awesome w her
The deck is incredibly troll. It durdles around until it gets an infinite turn combo

The best card for her is Gift of Immortality. The board wipe happens then she returns to play and the Gift returns at end of turn.

clayperce I do like your idea for Roon of the Hidden Realm I could definitely work in some flicker effects.. That reminds me of a card that I never found a use for that should fit in this deck Trade Routes.. Thanks I think I found my commander!
