4 Color Commanders

With the release of Commander 2016 we will be getting 4 Color Commanders.

I know I have seen some people say that they want 4 colors, but personally, I find the idea stupid. I don't see why anyone would want to play 4 Color.

The jump from 3 to 5 is reasonable in my opinion. I don't see much purpose in running 4 colors, simply excluding one color.

Short of the Commanders themselves having great abilities, I don't see much use for 4 color.

How do you feel? Do you like the idea? Would you have rather had something else this year?

It strongly depends on the new commanders. If their abilities are strong it makes sense to play them. Personally I'd not play 4 colours because it offers me a lot of problems with the expensive mana base that comes along with so many colours. To me even 3 colours is annoying sometimes (I don't own abur duals :/)

I've always had four color Commanders because I haven't met the people who wouldn't allow me to run the Nephilim as my Commanders.

And being That Guy who runs Nephilim decks, for me it's a combination of the novelty of four colors and their goofy, fun abilities, which is what I want to see out of whatever comes in these decks.

Also an official announcement errataing the Nephilim to be Legendary.

They announced that they would NEVER Erratic through nephilim to be legendary

Im guessing that he knows that, notice how he said people allow him to use the Nephilim as his commander.

While they cannot errata the current nephilim, there's no reason why they couldn't print new versions of them that happen to be legendary (that are different, of course, but they could be the same nephilim lore wise).

For me personally, the main draw will be artifact decks. It's pretty much a given that for EDH, the strongest artifacts are either Esper, or Monored. Esper probably has an advantage due to more options, but cards like Daretti, Scrap Savant, Goblin Welder and Scrap Mastery are easily worth adding a new color just for those 3 cards since they are just so resilient and add so much to a deck.

But it highly depends on whether or not the new 4-color commanders have any decent abilities or useful synergies with what you're planning. But short of printing more archetypal 5-color commanders, I think this is a great idea. It will add more variety to EDH as there are no 4 color legendaries, and most of the 5-color legendary creatures really don't lend themselves to one strategy or another, they just have generic effects that people use as a backup. If the 4-color commanders have useful abilities, they could be a nice alternative to just picking the least useless 5-color commander to lead your deck.

Hey, don't knock it 'til you rock it!

I like Necrotize's second thought. The 5c legendaries are either too specific or two generic; so having good 4c legendaries with fresh strategies would be nice. With 20 new legends as the base to the release we should see some cool decks popping up

I've already built a deck and have been playing it for the past month or two. I literally just play with no commander, just to see how the decks runs without it. It's a semi-goodstuff draw-cards deck with infinite combat phases as the primary wincon (besides beatdown). Ultimately I'll transform it to synergize with my commander of choice, but how often do you see Maelstrom Wanderer in a deck with something like Damia, Sage of Stone? Or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker with ramp like Tempt with Discovery? (Head to my profile if you'd like to see it, no shameless plug here!)

Depending on the revealed commanders, I may switch to , but at that point I'll either need to decimate other decks or purchase the correct shocks and buddy lands
