Best Boros Soldier Tribal Commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Hey guys,

So I'm wanting to make a Boros commander deck to round out my collection of decks. No idea who just yet, which is why I'm coming to you lovely people. I've got a TON of tribal support for soldiers, so I wanted to keep the commander in line with that (so no Gisela or Aurelia, even though I intend to have them in the deck), just to take advantage of the perks that go with it. Iroas is about the only non-soldier I would be tempted to make the commander, but if not, I'm basically between Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran, Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas, Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer, or Tajic, Blade of the Legion.

If I go with Agrus, it pretty much has to be weenie swarm aggro, I'd imagine. If I'm doing any of the other three, Voltron equipment builds seem the best way to go. Between those three, I'm leaning towards Tajic, just because that indestructibility really can go a long way in my local meta, and I'd imagine I can pretty easily get two other creatures out and attacking.

Sooo, what works for you, dear reader? Agrus Aggro Soldier Swarm? Voltron equipment? Both? Neither? You decide!

When you say you have lots of tribal soldiers stuff, what cards do you have for tribal? I can only think of white cards for that, so Brimaz, King of Oreskos would be my suggestion for a soldier deck.

@ M a g i c a l H a c k e r: True, most of the tribal soldier support is white, so mono-white COULD work, but I want to splash red so I can use stuff like Legion's Initiative, Assemble the Legion, Purphoros, God of the Forge, or even just practical shenanigans like using Sunforger to pull out Boros Charm or whatever protection spell I need once I get my army large enough.

Thanks for the suggestions, EddCrawley! I've got the majority of those prepped to use/in the mail!

If you want to go voltron I'd go Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer.

If indestructible is what you want you can still make a soldiers deck with Iroas, God of Victory at the helm of your army.

HOWEVER: you clearly state that you want to go the soldiers way, so to be in line flavorwise I'd put Tajic, Blade of the Legion as commander.

Sometimes when I have an idea like yours I build the deck then I pick the commander. Sometimes when you have a deck idea it's best to pick your commander after you build your deck. Also you can probably build your deck with all those legendary guys in it. If so then it would be cool to have a deck where you can switch up your commander to one of the 4 you mentioned and get a different play experience each time you play

Huh, I didn't even realize Jor Kadeen wasn't actually a soldier. D'oh! Aaanyway, I've got all of them in mind for the deck anyway. I might just go back and forth with them for a few matches. I've more or less got the deck ready anyway, save for which commander to use. I think I'll go with Tajic for now, but maybe swap out to Iroas at some point. Should be fun, I think.

The thing I would say is your best bet is Agrus. With Kalemne, there's not a whole lotta soldier type creatures at 5+ mana cost, and there's not many who are great with soldier tribal, which is all about token armies and creatures interacting. As for Tajic, he doesn't do much for your other creatures except becomes bigger when you attack with a team.

But, consider it like this: soldiers have a commander who isn't just another soldier, but more powerful. That's how Iroas or Jor Kadeen would fit into the theme and they'd both make great captains for small soldiers packing big punches.

I run Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas as my commander, and she is a monster. Double strike and vigilance is a brutal combo. My deck isn't soldier tribal, however, it's voltron. Sometimes I forget about her ability, and she's still big enough to swing for game anyway, so you don't REALLY need to build around that ability. Heck, you're probably going to be running EDH staples like Sun Titan, Reveillark, and Stonehewer Giant anyway, AND you said you were running Gisela and Aurelia too! Getting her experience counters has never been a problem for me. If you want, you can check out my deck: The Kalemne and Iroas Tapdance Extravaganza

If Kalemne still isn't going to be your general, I'd say you should still at least make her a part of the 99. 4 for a 3/3 soldier with double strike and vigilance ALONE is so worth it. Some more examples of cards that level her up: Karmic Guide, Godo, Bandit Warlord, and Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Again, all creatures that you were probably going to be running anyway.

I have a Tajic soldier deck... Might have some good ideas for you to pilfer.
