Build the best EDH deck that abides by the most companion deck building rules.

All ten companions are finally spoiled:

1-9 companions, will soon be updated with 10

and the tenth one was spoiled today:

10th companion

Now, unfortunately, the 10th Azorius companion is disqualified, since you cannot run more or less than 100 cards, and you cannot include both the even and odd CMC companions, and Lutri is banned, so the maximum is 7 out of 10.

Here are all the restrictions:

  • An odd CMC-only deck or even CMC only deck.
  • No card in your starting deck has more than one of the same mana symbol in its mana cost.
  • Each creature card in your starting deck is a Cat, Elemental, Nightmare, Dinosaur, or Beast card.
  • Your starting deck contains only cards with converted mana cost 3 or greater and land cards.
  • Each permanent card in your starting deck has converted mana cost 2 or less.
  • Each nonland card in your starting deck shares a card type.
  • Each permanent card in your starting deck has an activated ability.
Very important note - The commander itself is excluded from the deckbuilding restrictions, since only a 5-color commander will be able to play all those cards.

So, can you build the best EDH deck that abides by the most companion deck building rules?

The real question is, how many companions can you fulfill the restrictions of while still making a functional deck?

"But Tom, your deck can only have one companion!"

"Well, good sir, I am the Johnny and I do not care. I'll bet I can get to 3- HOW MANY PEOPLE BET I CAN GET TO 3??"

You may exclude the Commander from the Companion restrictions as a rule of the challenge, but do note that according to the release notes, your Commander must still meet the Companion restriction as well.

Your starting deck contains only cards with converted mana cost 3 or greater and land cards. Each permanent card in your starting deck has converted mana cost 2 or less.

I'm pretty sure these pretty much compete for fulfillment.

The and the ones can't be companions for the same deck either, so you are sitting at 6 maximum

Ok... 99 lands allows for 8, but I think one could do 6 with an actual elemental tribal deck w cmc 3+, odd cmc, activated abilities on all permanents which are only creatures with only one of each colored pip on the cmc. It wont be great, but it is doable

seshiro_of_the_orochi The simic and Orzhov ones are not mutually exclusive - you have to just to play all cards with no cmc 3 or less and no non-land permanents. Probably the most difficult combination of restrictions, but otherwise, it would not be a challenge.

So you're playing a deck of all instants or all sorceries (plus lands), all of which must have no more than one color pip/color, and are either all odd or all even CMC of 3 or greater.

...

Sounds like fun TBH.
