Competitive Golgari Commander help

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello everyone! I have a Golgari Commander deck with a sac/mill(tokens?) strategy (using Izoni as my commander). I however want to make the deck competitive, but I think I'll have to switch commanders. Does anyone have any ideas for a competitive commander? (I have Hapatra so I might make the deck around her, so changing the strategy).

TappedOut's generals by tier

I would say Meren of Clan Nel Toth for sac/mill/tokens. With things like Krosan Grip or whatever to deal with graveyard hate.

For a casual/competitive Golgari upgrade go with Meren of Clan Nel Toth or less expensive price The Gitrog Monster or Sultai with budget Muldrotha, the Gravetide .

With Muldrotha it's primarily a Golgari deck with a few blue cards. Can go Golgari colors with Muldrotha and only splash blue which is not difficult when playing green. You don't need blue for very many cards, only for Muldrotha if you wanted to.

Some good blue options that can give you repeatable value are: Mystic Remora , Mulldrifter , Coiling Oracle , Risen Reef . Brainstorm and Windfall are some staple blue cards. Blue adds to Golgari great low mana cost draw options that can be played from your graveyard. Wonder is powerful with self-mill.

A nice thing about splashing blue in Golgari is there's quite a few budget playable lands to choose from: Command Tower , Exotic Orchard , Opulent Palace , Evolving Wilds , Yavimaya Coast , Underground River , Ash Barrens , Sunken Hollow , Botanical Sanctum , Fetid Pools , Choked Estuary , etc. Of course there's lots of other more expensive lands, but it's nice to have the option to not break the bank to make a three color manabase.

The Gitrog Monster and Varolz, the Scar-Striped are the tried and true. Both act as always accessible combo pieces. Varolz runs as a Protean Hulk deck and gitrog is looking for Dakmor Salvage and a free discard outlet to dredge through the entire deck.

As far as the above suggestion for muldrotha, I have actually seen that he is much stronger in the 99 of a cedh deck than he can be as commander due to tutor and Reanimate effects being able to get him out and going much faster than from the command zone. I would actually suggest instead going for Tasigur, the Golden Fang or Thrasios, Triton Hero + tymna or vial smasher if you want to play muldrotha.

If you really want to incorporate tokens into your aristocrat deck, it’s gotta be Karador, Ghost Chieftain . Why? Cuz white. White means Intangible Virtue , it means some badass artifact/enchantment removal, and it means a lot of really solid B/W legends in the 99 ( Teysa Karlov , Athreos, God of Passage , Krav, the Unredeemed , Regna, the Redeemer , Elenda, the Dusk Rose , most of the Sorins, there’s more but whatever).

I've posted in your other thread. Here is my sac/recur based deck. I still need to make some cuts but it should give you an idea of what a deck in this archetype would look like. If you're looking for something that can't combo kill in the first few turns, don't play Hermit Druid , Angel of Glory's Rise , and the creatures that are mostly useless except to sac to recur angel with Dread Return like Narcomoeba , Fatestitcher , and Bloodghast

My favorite Golgari Commander is Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest . My list for it is surprisingly competitive, it's definitely a solid notch above the average EDH deck I run into at my LGS. It even could be tuned to consistently trigger infinite combos easily that's your thing, but my list is more of a fair midrange deck with an infinite combo for emergencies. Also Izoni is great in the 99 of the deck so she still gets to see play. The deck is just value engines and removal, and you only need to cast the commander when its time to pump the team and win. Its a fun very deck to play with.

I would actually like a only Golgari coloured deck, and so far my choices would probably be Hapatra, Meren, or Mazirek, I can't decide which ones though! (Even though Muldrotha looks interesting!)

Out of the choices you have in your above comment, Meren is by far the strongest. While not a combo piece like varolz or gitrog, meren is a solid value engine. Plus she is a relatively low cmc and has a thicc enough booty to survive a lot of combat.

I have just tested hapatra as my general, and it is pretty good with sacrifice, and is really fun! I don't know if it would be worth getting Meren, as I don't know how fun it is.

Sounds like you have already made your choice friend. No need to have made a thread if you wanted hapatra from the beginning. I will caution you that if you are trying to be competitive with any given deck it will be much harder with hapatra than with gitrog, varolz, tasigur, or even meren.

I do suppose that competitive for you may mean competitive in your playgroup rather than cEDH and if so hapatra may be the perfect choice.
