Commander (EDH) forum

I am working on completing my first 4 edh decks and I have amassed almost all the affordable cards for all four. I am down to the $15-50 cards on my list and I am wondering what people recommend.

Option 1: Focus now on finishing one deck at a time and get the expensive cards as thats what I want.

Option 2: Find cheaper alternatives (higher mana cost /minor draw back) and finish all 4.

Option 3: Combonation of the first two. Pick a couple big dollar cards that are essential to the deck (most likely land cards as they are more versatile in other decks in the future) and substitute ones that are not as important. Then move on to other decks cause this is ridiculously addicting.

??? Thanks in advance.

Pick the deck that is most exciting and enticing and ready to use and get the more expensive cards for that deck as you continue to round out your other decks

My biggest suggestion as someone who has played commander for a very long time, is to try and pick up staple cards. Things that aren't just good in your deck, but good in nearly every deck in those colors. That way you have to spend less on future decks if you dismantle previous decks. Probably just focus on your favorite. If you want to upgrade the others while you are at it, I would suggest go extreme budget on any upgrades (less than .50 per card). That way you focus your cash on getting the most bang for your buck on the pricier things.

Yea I agree. Start from scratch and build it up.

Like what most people have said, I would recommen going with option 1. The problem with buying cheaper alternatives is that later on, they will just be less good if/when you want ot make your deck(s) stronger, they will just become chaff. You're better off picking up staples (as GhostChieftain said) as these will be more valueable in deckbuilding later on.

It's the same reason why when peopel set a budget of $200 to build a deck but then say no cards over $5 for example. It's just silly. You're better off getting a few decent cards and filling the rest of the deck with the stuff which can either be A) upgraded later or B) was cheap but fits the role well. But if you only get cheap stuff, then it just leaves you more cards to upgrade later.
