I need a super cheap commander decklist

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Oct. 25, 2015, 11:04 p.m. by That_Guy_You_Know

I was playing commander at my local game store and was using one of my friends decks and had a lot of fun. I really need a deck for myself so I don't need to rely on my friend to come. I would love to find a decent commander build that is within 20 dollars. I know what I'm asking is outrageous, but I'm an unemployed high school junior and really want to get more involved in this wonderful format.

you CANNOT make commander for 20 bucks. seriously, its impossible unless you make a "land list" and those tend to be a tad boring.

try 100.

DERPLINGSUPREME you can. It just has to be a mono coloured list. I've seen a super budget list for 20-30 bucks on the site. I'll try and find it.

$20 is a bit low to set a price point. Depending on your collection you may be able to put one together for under $20 additional. The cheapest deck I built on here is Xenagos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?" which is $56 total. It works pretty well imo for the low price tag. There is only one card in it over $5 (why in the hell is Birds of Paradise $5.56 btw). The list is a bit old and not too well tuned, but it is a good jumping off point.

If you give a strategy or color combo you like I may be able to help with an extreme budget build. I like trying to make stuff work on a budget.

i recommend just getting a commander that has your fave color combo, and just fill it with other cool stuff. if you think commander is fun, then have fun don't bother making a competitive deck, you can refine your deck and de-budgetize it later.

About the cheapest deck I have found is to take Talrand, Sky Summoner, and then 99 bounce, draw, and counter spells. Maybe one or two cards to make your spells cheaper, but that is it. You probably have most of it in a small collection anyway, and it is pretty fun. Haha. Sol Ring is really gonna be your most expensive card. Surprisingly resilient too. But once people figure out your strategy, they will try to murder Talrand as quickly as possible...so the bounce can be used as tempo disruption, or save ass for your Talrand.

Edric, Purphoros, Zur, and the new Omnath can be built quite effectively for very cheap. 20-30$

That_Guy_You_Know,

It's AWESOME that you're getting into Commander! What color(s) or type of deck are you looking for?

Here's a link to the Commander decks under $20 here at TappedOut.

As PlattBonnay said, Wizards' pre-constructed Commander decks are super for new players. Though none of the pre-cons are great, they're all playable out of the box. Each allows you to try out three different commanders, practice your politics (because the decks are weak, you really have to work the table to win), and figure out a lot about what actually works and doesn't work for you in EDH. You also get a decent mana-base and a bunch of staple cards for once you figure out what direction you want to go. All-in-all, they're just a super way to explore the format. As I type this, the least expensive are Evasive Maneuvers (green/white/blue), Power Hungry (black/red/green), and Peer Through Time (blue)

You might also check out Abe Sargent's budget commander series over at gatheringmagic. His decks are all around $35, but they'll give you some ideas anyway.

Is it doable? Sure. But depending on your meta, this kind of budget will likely end up with you on the losing end a lot.

However, it also depends on cards you already have. If you have a lot of decent multiplayer cards, legendary creatures and/or lands, the job is a lot easier.

You can also just save up until the new commander precons arrive. The precons aren't great, but they're absolutely playable and can be upgraded a card at the time as a fun project during the coming months.

You can build a deck for $20. Will it be fun for you? A little. Will it be spectacular to play? Probably not. Will it be fun to play against? Probably not. Will it be the way you got to know Commander? No.

Unless you really want to build one of those Sub-$20-Decks that are usually very one-sided, you'll want to spend more than $20. Find a way to make your budget $100 and you'll be on a very good way. Believe me, it's just so much more fun, especially if you don't want to limit yourself on mono-colour.

I honestly don't want to tag everyone in this thread, but I will tag DERPLINGSUPREME. Here you go, mister "you CANNOT make commander for 20 bucks".

That_Guy_You_Know, don't even worry about the folks here who are pushing for $100+ decks. You can play good Commander for $20, great Commander for $35 easy, and insanely great Commander for $50.

October 26, 2015 8:57 a.m.

I'm aware that you can make a commander for less than 100 dollars, I've seen this 12 dollar Isamaru voltron that my friend told me about. I've considered melek but I don't want to spend a hundred dollars on a format i'm new to.

Cool!

If you're looking at Melek, check out Budget Melek, Izzet Paragon - EDH / Commander . As I type this, it clocks in at $43.27, but with some swaps and cards you probably already have, you can drive that down quickly.

There are a bunch of other similarly-priced Commander decks too, at BudgetMTGDecks.

Looking at the list there ... Budget Rakdos, Lord of Riots - EDH / Commander would be a good budget option if you've been cracking any BFZ packs. He plays really well with any big Eldrazi you may have laying around.

One more thought on Melek too: The Commander 2015 precons come out on Nov 13th. They're enemy colors this year, so we'll be getting a red-blue deck for sure, and it may even include Melek as one of the reprint commanders. Spoilers should start any day now ...

Indigoindigo,

Anything by Tomer Abramovici over at mtggoldfish = Insanely great. Most are under $50.

Shameless self-promotion: Jeleva, a heleva good Commander (super-budget) = Insanely great. Under $50 with just a couple minor changes.

Also, above I mentioned Abe Sargent's budget commander series at gatheringmagic. His decks range between great and insanely great, all for around $35.

RoarMaster I mean they're no $20 Mikaeus deck, but they're pretty fun (I actually own all three of those decks IRL) and they all have respectable win percentages.

I'd say increasing your budget to $40~50 will allow for more freedom in choosing a deck.

I've decided on a Talrand, Sky Summoner commander deck, and have found a couple of interesting decklists, but because I am new to the format, and how different EDH is from other formats, could you guys find some talrand decks that you think would be good for someone new to EDH?
