I'm Starting to get Bored of EDH...

Commander (EDH) forum

... and have friends who want me to get into the format again. I used to play Edric, Spymaster of Trest but due to the negative feedback I've given up on playing him. What is a commander you guys recommend for someone who's bored of the format?

Zedruu the Greathearted. You will literally never play the same game twice.

The one that they enjoy playing the most?

Joking aside you need to have a commander you enjoy to enjoy the format. So it really all depends on your playstyle. If you could describe what you enjoy playing more then we would be able to be more helpful.

Empress Galina. You're always going to be as powerful as the rest of the group, never too strong, never too weak, because you use their deck to win. And you also never play the same game twice. Not to mention budget, if that's your thing.

Merieke Ri Berit combo steal yo shizz shenanigans is pretty funny. I loved playing it. Also, a real fun deck, similar to your U/G Edric build is the new Ezuri (U/G Commander Set with Experience counters), you can literally combo out by like turn 6 with infinite turns. It's pretty awesome. Or there is a sweet snake tribal U/G deck that just straight up hoses people FAST. Or you can just play good ol big fatty beat down with G/R using the new 4 drop from Oath. Or you could just play W/U Prison with Grand Arbiter, that's a deck that allows people to have a lot of fun (sarcasm). Or just play UWR Narset, she's real fun to build around, I made a superfriends deck with her and just let her triggers cast my planeswalkers for free. Or you could make a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant graveyard deck. Super fun, decently competitive and has great color combinations. Just some ideas.

TBH, the deck thats stayed around with me longest is Ashling the Pilgrim. its a red ramp/control deck with about 30 different ways of killing people, one of my favorites being Grafted Exoskeleton on ashling with lots of counters.

IDk, try out goblins. lots of things to do with them in many different ways. tribal is always fun.

and try spicing things up, for that matter! planechase, archenemy, vanguard, all great ways of enriching the experience!

Build a colorless edh. You think I'm joking. I am not. Or build Squee, Goblin Nabob.

I don't know, I want to build something completely unique and semi playable, I've considered bird tribal with Kangee, Aerie Keeper, but I haven't been able to find a good build yet.

mono red chaos. Just cause chaos and see if they invite you back.

Jalira, Master Polymorphist. Polymorph into giant scary monsters. You can either just fill the deck with random robots, sphinxes, and sea critters, or you can go spikey, and fill it with nothing but legendary creatures...and Blightsteel Colossus, therefore, paying 4 for a trampling, indestructible, infecting one shot machine. I built it (the first version, not the blightsteel version) recently and have had a ton of fun.

Kangee is cool, I wanted to cook up something for him for awhile now but could never truly figure out what I wanted to do with him.

A Humility or Godhead of Awe focused deck seems like it could be pretty cool with him, and then you can run the rest as bird tribal as you said.

As people have mentioned, Political, Group Hug, or Chaos decks are super fun to play. I played an Oloro, Ageless Ascetic deck for awhile that focused on being able to shut down the leading player(s) for as long as possible and making the game as insane as possible. Running such things as Omen Machine, Knowledge Pool, Braids, Conjurer Adept, and the best card Divine Intervention. I was going to switch the deck to actually be able to win but took it apart before I finished it. Regardless still making the game go on for 3+ hours was great.

As for general tips. Make something unique, you'll have a lot more fun piloting a deck that most people wouldn't think of than playing shit everyone plays like Damia or Derevi.

That is a difficult question without more background knowledge of your playstyle and your group. So, it depends. But in general I'd advice to play more casual oriented games if you played competitive before (and got tired of those), or vice versa (if you played casual, try playing competitive instead).

A thing I do to steer clear of boredom (I normally play casual) is to avoid 'the usual suspects'). By those I mean cards that are good in any deck you put them (and that can have them of course): the Swords (such as Sword of Fire and Ice), Lightning Greaves, certain coloured cards (Rhystic Study, Damnation, Wrath of God) are just a few from the top of my head. Working around those allows you to play new cards, and discover new combos. Our playgroup even agreed that a player with a deck that has the Swords , greaves and such notifies the other players up front. It gives a whole new angle to EDH.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker can actually be an interesting leader.

IF you want to have fun and get back into it, what you need are DRAGONS. There fun and eat everything in site. For a commander I recommend going for atarka, world render as commander. cos she can one bang with commander damage and your friends would have to deal with her fast

What about tribal commanders? In the past I've had a lot of fun with political and synergistic commanders.

Marath, Will of the Wild is like a swiss army knife commander but I run him in this deck Marath, Angelic Forestine
I am personally building and playtesting a Feldon of the Third Path deck right now Third Time is The Charm, haven't been able to playtest it yet.

I also think trying to build without the color blue is is generally more fun but that's just me.

Other Fun Commanders:
Balthor the Defiled
Starke of Rath
Sun Quan, Lord of Wu
Vela the Night-Clad
Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker

Personally I think toning Doran, the Siege Tower in an all defender deck would be hilarious! You basically drop 4/4 for 2 mana of less but everything is defender so you just flounder around behind an impregnable fortress Intel everyone else is dead or you chump shot the table with Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond or the like.

Alternatively you could build a deck that doesn't have a commander, Run singing really intimidating like Lord of Tresserhorn but build the deck so they you never need to play him and you only cat him to distract people from your real plan.

Do a giant tribal with Ruhan of the Fomori. You can buy the Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas commander deck and get a lot of the creatures you need. You can suit him up with artifacts and enchantments and build up other giants. Plus you have access to great political cards with the America colors.
