Legacy Lands, but commander?
Commander (EDH) forum

Hi guys! I'm looking for a lands based deck in commander, I really like the idea of having a deck with a ton of utility lands and a lands payoff in the command zone. I really like the depths deck of legacy, but for various reasons, it doesn't translate well to commander. I was wondering if anyone could point me in that direction. To be clear, im not looking for just another landfall based deck and spamming landfall triggers, im more looking for lands that do things themselves. Thanks!

A friend of mine has a pretty OP Azusa, Lost but Seeking lands deck. I don't have his list, but it's got all the usual suspects, plus a bunch of mana dorks, and relies on Glacial Chasm to keep itself safe, while looking to Strip Mine people to slow them down, and eventually kills with Marit Lage/Manlands/Infinite mana combos.

Golos, Tireless Pilgrim Is a great commander to consider because it fetches whatever utility card you need, be it Cabal Coffers, Field of the Dead, Dark Depths, Thespian's Stage or Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.

It can be done in commander, but you will tend to have a few more effects from things like landfall creatures along with the usual land utilities, simply because of how many spots you need to fill. My recommendation is Lord Windgrace. When I built lands for commander, he was what I used and I’ve enjoyed the deck immensely.

May I offer an alternative. I have a friend that uses Titania, Protector of Argoth as a commander. Obviously it revolves around sacing lands to generate elementals. You can easily run all the utility lands you could want and recur them easily in mono green.

I like the idea of using Titania, Protector of Argoth but if you are going to do that and focus on elementals then you could consider going the Omnath route, either full 4 color for Omnath, Locus of Creation or at least 2 color for Omnath, Locus of Rage. It lets you include Titania and gives access to red which has a decent pool elemental focused cards in addition to the green good stuff.

Kodama of the East Tree + Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith
You play one land with both out, and you can play all your lands!
That said, this set of commanders might be better for a landfall deck....

A deck focused mainly on the abilities of it's lands doesn't really have a place in edh for the sole reason that there aren't many lands that will do much against three or more opponents that are doing crazy stuff. In legacy Lands doesn't perform well in a meta with a ton of combo decks, and in edh most decks are combo or can perform one. The best lands that work because of their abilities are Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Field of the Dead, then there are the big mana lands like Gaea's Cradle, but I don't think you're looking for big mana, then you have decks that revolve around certain lands, but are more about the synergy between a certain land and the rest of the deck, look to cards like Magosi, the Waterveil and Academy Ruins. Your best bet for a lands focused deck, aside from some weird brew, is to look at the high impact lands and build around those cards, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle can act as a good control card; however that's not going to stop many combos, so maybe you can run a commander that discourages combo, think Ruric Thar, the Unbowed.

I’d say this deck totally has a place, because literally any deck can be played in EDH. It might not be the most powerful, but that’s ok!

Titania is actually ideal for this type of strategy. Been playing my Titania deck since 2014 and it's great.

I just realized that the new legendary Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait could be perfect. You get green for a lot of great effects, blue for a bit of control, and the commander lets you play more cards and draw off all the extra utility lands you'd want to play.

I also don't mean "dont send me a deck if it has a single landfall card in it," I just want it to thematically tend to the side of utility lands as opposed to landfall
