I was reading Scythe Specter and was just trying think of the most effective way to maximize his ability and Blade of Selves felt like the number 1 way of doing this then I just started thinking. How good is blade of selves and what new Blade of Selves combos have you used in CMDR that really stood out or was just WOW this is good! Tell me your stories
I need a copy of Blade for my BR deck, because Blade of Selves+Chancellor of the Forge+Purphoros, God of the Forge would be a great flavor win.

It's great in Gonti, Lord of Luxury or Vela the Night-Clad and Gray Merchant of Asphodel

Any enchantment that doubles the number of tokens made makes Blade of Selves doubly hilarious. Also, Cathars' Crusade means you throw down even more power as all the tokens "see" each other entering, if I remember the ruling correctly.

Blade of Selves and Kokusho, the Evening Star. You equip and attack a player without blockers. You create 2 copies of Kokusho, which you then sacrifice to the legend rule. Each opponent gets drained for 10. Repeat next turn.

Seems really good with Angel of Despair, Archon of Justice, Ashen Rider and any of the titans, primordials, and gearhulks.

BoS with Giant Adephage in my Trostani deck make me laugh.
July 24, 2017 5:03 p.m.
Blightsteel Colossus is pretty busted. Prime Speaker Zegana targeting any p/t = number of cards in your hand creature will pretty much draw your whole deck.

Nacatl War-Pride wouldn't work, the "Whenever ~ attacks" wouldn't trigger because the tokens are created attacking, you don't declare them as attacking.
I have an Iroas, God of Victory commander deck, and Knight of the White Orchid is sweet ramp in colors that don't normally have it

Omnath, Locus of Rage. In a five-player game, I swing, make three copies, all of which die due to the legend rule. Four Omnath's see three Omnath's die, and before blocks can be declared I get twelve lightning bolts. The more players, the more disgusting it gets. I once swung in an eight player game. Forty-two lightning bolts, 126 damage. Insta-killed two players, greatly damaged two more, cleared the blockers for my original Omnath to hit.
This works with all five of the legendary spirit dragons from Kamigawa, like Kokusho, the Evening Star as well.

Does the creature say "ETB do a degenerate thing?" If it does, then it techs with the blade. XD
I've equipped it to an Acidic Slime because someone was getting on my last nerve. They wanted to be obnoxious, so they had a lot of their lands wiped. I took the blade out of the deck shortly after because it started getting blown up before I could use it. :p
July 25, 2017 12:45 p.m.
I had it in my Merendipity (Unfocused, but Deadly) Meren Toolbox deck, but never got to really use it. My meta has grown, so I'll try again I guess.
Possibilities are endless though

@PhotogenicParasympathetic that combo doesnt work either, the legend rule doesn't destroy or sac the legend rule stops the death trigger or the put into the graveyard trigger
July 25, 2017 5:50 p.m.
griffstick says... #16
The legend rule will put all but one legend into your graveyard but without the trigger so only etb works here for instanc Reaper King works with the Blade of Selves great but if you have a Dictate of Erebos or Grave Pact in play, when these copies of the Reaper King are put into the graveyard do to the legend rule, you get no triggers for your Dictate of Erebos or Grave Pact

However, the legend rule is a state-based action. If you are the active player and have a sacrifice outlet, you can sacrifice the copies after they enter the battlefield and before you would pass priority.
Ex. Kokusho, the Evening Star has the Blade of Selves equipped. You declare attacks on person A with Kokusho. Myriad triggers, making copies attacking person B and C. If you let the legend rule occur, the copies do not 'die', they are placed in the graveyard. However, before passing priority when changing phases, you could sacrifice copies B and C to Ashnod's Altar. You would get the death triggers from the sacrifices (since the sacrifice is a cost, it would happen before you ever pass priority), and 4 colorless mana. You will need to specify you are holding priority though.

Things being put into a graveyard as a state-based action still triggers "put into the graveyard from the battlefield" aka "dies." Its not a sacrifice though, and its not destroyed but the things still "die."
State-based actions do not use the stack (Rule 704.1) so they cannot be responded to.

griffstick says... #19
The legend rule states that no two legendary creatures of the same name can exist on your side of the battlefield. If two would be in play one must be chosen and moved to the graveyard, this happens immediately as a state based action and does not use the stack. The even though the creature is moved from the battlefield to the graveyard it is not considered to "die" and therefore won't trigger any dying effects that you may have on the board.

Now that that is cleared up please no more rules stuff about the legend rule

Two legends have to be on the battlefield for the Legend rule to come into effect in the first place?
Moving from the battlefield to the graveyard is the definition of dying.
I just want to clarify it because it's very important for Blade of Selves interactions. That's the point of the OP isn't it?

04/11/2015 If the equipped creature is legendary, the tokens will all enter the battlefield. Then youll choose one of them to remain on the battlefield. The others will be put into your graveyard. Any enters-the-battlefield or dies triggers of the tokens will work.

PhotogenicParasympathetic says... #23
MindAblaze is correct. When the legend rule forces a player to put one of the permanents into their graveyard, that permanent DIES. It triggers "dies" effects and "put into a graveyard from play" effects. It is NOT destroyed, so legendary enchantments wouldn't trigger something similar to Karmic Justice.

Anyway, I would like to continue exploring ways to bust this sword. I've been liking Purphoros, God of the Forge + BoS + anything that makes lots of tokens when it comes in. Myr Battlesphere maybe?
July 26, 2017 12:21 p.m.
@MindAblaze: what about Avenger of Zendikar, Hornet Queen, and Chancellor of the Forge?
July 26, 2017 3:07 p.m.
griffstick says... #27
That's cool, but Yosei, the Morning Star seems stupid strong with the Blade of Selves
July 26, 2017 5:32 p.m.
MindAblaze says... #28
Yeah, Blade + Purphoros seems like a game plan in itself.
Yosei, Keiga, the Tide Star or any of the Kamidragons seem good.
General Tazri could lead an ally deck to a preposterous Blade of Selves experience.
July 26, 2017 5:54 p.m.
Equip Grenzo's Ruffians with Blade of Selves in a dedicated melee deck (Adriana, Captain of the Guard comes to mind), Blade triggers melee for each opponent on each copy, as well as any other melee creatures. Once any of them hit, deal that much damage to all (have Blade of Selves trigger before melee if possible, someone tell me if it isn't). Pretty stupid while maybe not as broken as the Kamigawa dragon spirits.
July 26, 2017 9:44 p.m.
griffstick says... #30
Creatures put into the battlefield attacking don't trigger melee, if that wasn't the case then the myriad mechanic works great with melee,

You guys keep saying Purphoros but what about Warstorm Surge and or Stalking Vengeance or both together with the Blade of Selves attached to it 35 damage with combat damage included or we could use Vicious Shadows here
July 26, 2017 10:51 p.m.
MindAblaze says... #32
I'm on board for Stalking Vengeance and Vicious Shadows but you need a sac outlet too because the blade exiles the tokens. No shortage of them but you need something that fits and optimally is useful.
Warstorm Surge+Blightsteel Colossus+Blade of Selves seems pretty preposterous if you want people to hate you. j05h already suggested Blightsteel, but not like this (never like this...)
July 27, 2017 12:04 a.m.
Hamletback Goliath gets 6 counters per opponent and Harvester of Souls draws a bunch of cards, even if you use another creature.
Roon of the Hidden Realm and Brago, King Eternal can EASILY abuse this, but any etb or death ability worth running is worth abusing

I remember one time, I copied Avenger of Zendikar to make a ton of tokens, and then overloaded Cyclonic Rift into Windfall happened (guy had Leyline of Anticipation out).
