Gleeock Instead of buying a Tropical Island, I paid $10 for a Serra Angel at the Maplewood Shinders back in the day. Why would I pay good money for a land when I could have that sweet 5-mana angel?

Haha... Touche & solid. The things I would trade away for Leviathon or Craw wurm

I remember for some reason thinking "wurm" meant worm and not wyrm. But I knew Craw Wurm wasn't that good; everyone had a bunch of them, so it had to be printed at a higher frequency or something. (We hadn't figured out that rarity involved multiple sheets.)

One thing I was thinking about with all this was, I wonder if a good split in the format would be combat damage vs alternate wincon, rather than necessarily cEDH and commander. Just as much as Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus are broken when everyone is swinging Serra Angels High damage commanders like Slicer kind of play weird in cEDH because they generally knock out one or two players and then lose.

Back to the topic at hand, I do wonder what red'll do now that Dockside Extortionist is banned.

As announced here, the Rules Committee is suspending operations as a result of the threats they have been receiving and turning over control of Commander to Wizards.

Here is the full text of their tweet:

As a result of the threats last week against RC members, it has become impossible for us to continue operating as an independent entity. Given that, we have asked WotC to assume responsibility for Commander and they will be making decisions and announcements going forward.

Wizards of the Coast’s statement can be found here.

That's just tragic... as far as to wheter or not it is a good or bad thing for EDH/the game in general I have no clue... but those circumstances for how we got here is just sad.

Even though I do not believe they were completely independent, they were at least mostly independent. This is bad news. We were better off without the greed machine in complete control.

I think a "onion layer" about this decision that troubles me is those that would interpret this as an act of cowardice or some sort of concession or victory in the aftermath of the ban announcement... its all just frustrating... it kinda makes me want WOTC to hold firm on the last RC decision.

This isn't directed at anybody here. I'm just venting.

Good job, internet. You bullied and threatened another group of fans and volunteers into turning their back on something they loved. And for what? A few hundred dollars? The privilege of doing something that was never supposed to be done?

I want you to know that this

  • was completely unnecessary.

  • is criminal harassment.

  • probably won't change anything.

But what do you care? You destroyed people's happiness, and possibly lives, for a petty, vindictive, and pointless victory. You won. Good work. I hope you're proud of being so whiny, self-centered, and toxic that other people's happiness and safety means literally nothing to you. I hope you're proud of the reputation you're giving our community, like you have so many others. Because I'm not.

I know that not everybody in this community is like you. I know that there are far more people who know how to disagree respectfully, who know how to take a loss, than there are people like you. You aren't as many as you think you are. Nobody likes you. Your only power comes through demanding submission, and I hate that it works. I hate that you're so dedicated to your selfishness that people literally have to run for their lives. You don't deserve anything you "fought" for.

But I'm staying to support the people who care. We try to keep our community's reputation good. We help each other, we teach and learn from each other, we support each other, and we're stronger than ever. Yeah, you won a round. You might even get away with it. But we're still here.

For the actual consequences of this, it looks like WotC is working on some sort of power ranking "bracket" system.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/on-the-future-of-commander

It's still vague, so send them your (constructive!) feedback, but I can't say I'm sold on this just yet. It looks like an even more simplified version of the 1-10 ranking system, and it seems like it's going to try to apply a lot of objectivity to a very subjective process of deck comparison.

Well! I'll have to see what comes about in the next year. This might be the perfect stopping point for me as far as MtG is concerned anyway. I have more fun spending less money on DnD (& liquor) & partying more anyway. We have a house rule where I have to go shirtless if I score a crit, it makes for a lot of shirtless time.

Nerds are awful, what else is new

Disgusting.

The bracket system as-is seems way too imprecise. Like, my "Omar' and the Counters" has Mishra's Workshop, is it really accurate to lump it in with the CEDH crowd because of that? The basic idea is fine though.

We are on the worst timeline.

I'm disgusted with the small minority (and I do believe it is only a small minority) our community who let the anonymity of the internet get them and abused and threatened people.

I think this will be worse for Commander over the long term. Wizards is in this for the money. Whatever you felt about the RC, they were volunteers who did this for the love of the game and the community.

I'm not sure that Wizards would have done those bans (well, maybe Nadu...) not because of game play reasons, but because of reprint equity reasons.

I don't believe that we'll see the bans reversed though. Doing so would make Wizards look weak, and I don't think they want that.

Pauper Commander RC is not ready for what is about to come at them... I guess a lot of people will change formats for $ derisking and rules independence. Are they even around anymore? I actually used to go to uni with one of them (not knowing he was involved at that time) but completely lost track of the guy.

(Also, not that it matters, but "called it" @ page 2 #44)

September 30, 2024 4:24 p.m.

Gleeock says... #17

Oh yeah! This could be interesting with Pauper

September 30, 2024 4:31 p.m.

Mostly it was because these cards were so high in price, and now, as I said, Jeweled Lotus is literally worthless (from $90), so, no, I don't think Pauper will attract this particular madness.

Death threats, man, that's when it stops being fun;]. I always liked what Hideaki Anno did when he received death threats for the ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion by showing them in the sequel? (Really, what is the word for what End of Evangelion is?) So, until (if) the RC ever returns, I trust WotC to be good caretakers of the format. (And have many lawyers in case anyone pulls this kind of stunt again.)

October 1, 2024 4 p.m.

Oh, that ;] isn't winking; it's just a typo.
