Modern to Commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi, everyone! I'm doing a deck series that analyzes some of the most popular Modern decks, and tries to make them Commander viable. Can you guys give me any suggestions for deck arch-types you'd like to see? Some on my shortlist are Lands, Burn, and Death's Shadow. Here's my decklist with ideas for Humans: Modern to Commander | Humans. Thanks for any suggestions!

Tron, Control, Ponza, Storm, and Jund.

Control, storm, and land destruction are already pretty well represented , but Tron and Jund sound really cool. Thanks so much!

Ad Nauseam is already a common combo for the cEDH community, it'd seem fun to build an Esper, all-in version!

Also, make a humans deck. Seems fun to rather than try a dumb human tribal EDH deck, run the modern tempo deck that just uses a tribal backbone, fully based on humans with interactive qualities!

I like the idea of humans! Do you have any suggestions for a commander? I looked at some decklists, and the majority seem to be 4-color. Thanks for your input!

I tested a 4c pile, with no green, but I think that a 4c no red pile is better, and I have a plan. I'll get on it after work!

I'm actually going Bant with Chulane, just to dump a bunch of Hatebearers on the ground super fast. The only notable cards Black and Red add in terms of humans are Harsh Mentor, Imperial Recruiter, and Kitesail Freebooter. I'll have it posted today!

Souls Sisters is easy to port over from modern to commander. You could go monowhite but my own build is G/W helmed by Rhys the Redeemed

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm trying to port over archtypes that aren't as well represented in EDH from modern, like Tron or non-aggro humans, but Soul Sisters are already pretty popular in the form of lifegain strategies.

bChulane doesn't really go with any of the tempo disruption strategies that Modern Humans has. It really feels like a normal edh creature deck, which just happens to use the same creature type.

Modern Humans is entirely based on Kitesail Freebooter's ability with Meddling Mage to shut out combo decks, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben's ability to slow them down and protect your board, and the Champion of the Parish, Mantis Rider, Thalia's Lieutenant setup to end the game at fast speeds with the otherwise weak hatebears. Adding in the rest of the deck you see that the goal of Humans isn't to combo with humans, but to be an anti-noncreature deck with hatebears, which use Aether Vial to get around counterspells, and then use Cavern of Souls as well as a tribal base just to pump out a bit more damage and consistency in the Modern format.

Drawing cards and playing additional lands as you speed through your deck of creatures isn't Humans, it's much more akin to Legacy Elves.

Thank you. This is why I started this series. I know almost nothing about Modern metagame, and I created this deck to learn more about it. Thank you so much for this response. I learned more in these two paragraphs then I learned reading a 10-page article about Humans in modern. Anyway, thank you so much.

Now, onto your suggestions. I'm going to have to change my commander to Witch-Maw colors, but what commander should I do? I was worried Chulane was a bit to much of a "goodstuff" commander, but I didn't see any other commanders that fit the bill.

Najeela Tempo decks using humans and cheap interactive creatures could still do well.

I'll look more into it. Sadly a 1-1 creature based DnT deck with tribal synergies based on a super efficient 5c manabase wouldn't work the same in a 4 player deck.
