Mythic Commander! (A thingy my playgroup did)

Mythic Commander is a variation of commander that only allows mythic creatures to be your commanders.
The twist is that the creature does not have to be legendary.
Me and my playgroup have been playing this for a while and have had a blast. The commander of my choice is Soulfire Grand Master.
It did get bonkers with crazy combos and playstyles you would never see in traditional Commander, which is what made our playtesting absolutely hilarious.
Another rule tweek is that there is no Commander Damage rule.
The rules are self governing among playgroups
It's Commander. Isn't it a relatively bonkers format anyway? This particular variant would likely require additional policing, but it seems far from broken.

My playgroup actually banned Craterhoof as we were coming up with the idea. We are only 5 people so we haven't thought of every possible outcome. And yes some decks could get out of hand but thats what rules and bannings are for.

Felidar Sovereign as a commander? I'm gonna say no
July 26, 2016 12:50 a.m.
Sorry but you gotta say yes, its a crazy variation that has way more interactions and things you have to anticipate than in traditional commander, which is why me and my playgroup like it.

@Zakass we don't have to say anything. the format seems broken. and If you don't find normal commander interesting enough, try building more interesting decks. set your goal to fucking u the rules of the game instead of winning.
seriously. you could also run Warren Instigator as the commander. or Phyrexian Obliterator
if commander damage is a thing in it, how about Malignus

Seems like an interesting spin-off to me! Would it pick up steam to rival commander? Probably not as it is pretty similar to commander, so there wouldn't really be an audience for it that isn't already satisfied by commander.

fuck man, Primeval Titan can be your commander!
by all means, please play. infact, please use some of these or the ones I mentioned earlier. just know how insane it is.
July 26, 2016 1:15 a.m.
Yeah some of my friends used a few of the mythics you mentioned, and it was a blast.
July 26, 2016 1:23 a.m.
I really don't think it will become something as large as Commander, its just a thing me and my playgroup have been playing for a while now so I figured that I would share it with the rest of the community.

Can you imagine the look on the guy running Phyrexian Obliterator as commander's face after you Control Magic it?
Here's a quick commander damage clock. Block it. I dare you.

logansullivan says... #18
so you want one Dark Depths with counters on it? because if you use Vesuva that's what you get

DERPLINGSUPREME: Primeval Titan would put both lands out at the same time, so Vesuva can't see Dark Depths and can't copy it. And, of course, as logansullivan pointed out, even if they came in separately, because Vesuva enters as a copy of Dark Depths, it enters with the 20 counters on it, and then you lose one to the legend rule. You need Thespian's Stage to copy without the counters, letting you lose both, one to the legend rule, and one to the Marit Lage trigger.

so you just answered one question I had about the format about from the vault product, but do mtgo only sets count for mythic? and what about promo cards do they count as mythics?
July 26, 2016 4 a.m.
No, only cards printed as mythic rare count as mythic rare. A promo of uncommon rarity is still an uncommon not a mythic.

DERPLINGSUPREME Dude I have been playing commander with my playgroup for about 3 years now. So of course we would want to mix things up a lot. I have built plenty of interesting decks and so has the rest of my playgroup. Yes we did get kinda bored of Vanilla Commander and decided to try something hilariously fun and new, there is nothing wrong with me sharing this idea with the rest of the community.

I could see this being super crazy and fun, also crazy and not so fun. I've had normal commander games both ways. I don't see why Derp had to hate on it, though I can understand what he's saying.
When my group wants to spice thing up, we pull out the Avatar and Planeschase cards, shit can go real quick or real slow. But it's always up and down. You're doing great one second, next second you're toast.
July 26, 2016 6:40 a.m.
That's exactly how it ended up.
The plane would be flying smoothly for a little bit and then I spontaneously combust and the plane starts crashing towards the ground. But befofore I hit the ground a friend would burst through the door with a fire extinguisher. After laughing it off we both scream in terror as he implodes through his anus... never to be seen again.
July 26, 2016 9:40 a.m.
Maelstrom Archangel sounds fun. Imagine all the cards you could play with this. Army of the Damned, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Plague Wind, Omniscience, Maelstrom Wanderer, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, Storm Herd, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. Free stuff everywhere.
July 26, 2016 9:50 a.m.
I totally forgot about that card, it would be sweet to build around.
July 26, 2016 10:23 a.m.
DERPLINGSUPREME Let's tone it down a little man. No need to be so negative and condescending.
Zakass This sounds like a blast! I have to agree with everyone though, there seem to be extremely broken commanders. I will keep an eye on this!
July 26, 2016 3:48 p.m.
logansullivan Im not very familiar with mtgo but I will bring it up the next time me and my friends meet up.

seeing someone go from Maelstrom Archangel into an Omniscience I would laugh so hard. The desire to scoop on the spot would be there, but man would it be funny to see what could happen
July 26, 2016 4:53 p.m.
This sounds like a really fun variant.
Thanks for brining it to the table.
July 28, 2016 9:25 a.m.
Well i dont expect this to be competitive, it just looks like the type of table top variant that isnt monitored by excessive rules and bannings. But as the type of format that is ruled by the players within a playgroup. Some playgroups might not allow Platinum Angel while others will. Think of it as a 'self governing format'.
July 28, 2016 11:17 a.m.
@ Zakass - This seems like so much fun.
I would want to play Consecrated Sphinx, Soulfire Grand Master, or Havengul Lich. Notice I want card advantage one way or another!
July 30, 2016 7:21 a.m.
It is super fun, what me and my friends do is add a budget of $50 dollars so that none of our decks get to much of an advantage over the others.
DERPLINGSUPREME says... #2
no offense but this seems like an awful idea. there are so many busted things to do.
Craterhoof Behemoth every turn in mono green? wonderful.
