Life totals for 1v1 commander games has officailly changed from 40 to 30. I personally like the change. Commanders lie Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest just got a little more OP'd.

As stated above, starting life for duel commander has always been 30 but recently it has been changed to 20. 30 life made sense but 20 life makes games end ridiculously fast, every shop I've went to still uses 30 life due to how boring 20 life duel commander games are.

Me too TheVectornaut, we will probably stick to 40 with the people I generally play with. I like how it is intentionally significantly different from a standard game.

You would have done well to mention that this was for MTGO only. WOTC doesn't manage any Commander variant as a format.

My friends mentioned this to me when I was hanging out with them this past weekend, and I was displeased by the change, but I shall be glad to inform them that it affects online play only.
Why did WotC change that rule? What reason could there have been for it? Were games lasting too long, and they wished to make them shorter?

I'm not 100% sure. There is speculation that WoTC will be taking control from the RC in regards to Commander. Which would mean official sanctioned tournaments. But again, it's speculative as of now.

Bless that this change is online only, although it could speed up games, I don't think it's fair to slower decks. When I was first told of this rule, I said to my friend, "Who even plays 1v1 Commander?"

Last I checked, Duel commander aka french commander (which has a different ban list) over at duelcommander.com had changed the starting life total from 30 to 20. That said, the WOTC site and the mtgcommander.net site that many of us prefer still has the starting life totals at 40 regardless of the number of players...Do you have a source for this recent change?
