Playgroup Peculiarities
Commander (EDH) forum

Every now and then I'll hear someone give advice for EDH that seems entirely off-base to me... and then realize they're playing with different people who do different things.
Someone will say that Selvala, Explorer Returned is a commander that will discourage people from attacking you, and I'll think about how every time I see someone play her they get hated right off the table.
Or they'll talk about EDH games being about creatures attacking in big huge battles and I'll think about how often I do games where there will be several cycles around the table without anyone dealing any combat damage. We're all too busy trying to combo off or prevent others from getting their combos.
I'm curious what ways other people find their playgroup differs from what they've heard other players talking about on here. Anything weird that sets you apart from what seems to be the norm?

My playgroup is best described as "squeaky wheel gets the kick," with everyone in the pod savaging the perceived threat without any consideration for anything else going on or what will happen after they've been pounded into the dirt. I win maybe 70% of my games and nearly all of those wins are in the fashion of a mouse emerging from its burrow after the dinosaurs have been wiped out.
There are a handful of competitive players at league on any given week whose decks are on par with or better than my own, and being some of the better players in the pod they will go out of their way to keep me down, which makes me look harmless. I've spent 3+ turns where my only move was to Genesis up Novijen Sages and draw 2, or to play my commander for the 7th time that game, but being the most obvious threat the entire pod will throw everything they've got at them, and given that they're not the most competitively minded players there's usually just enough delay before when they have the opportunity to act that they can do a lot of damage.
I remember one game where all 5 of us were still in it because 4 of us were ruining each other every turn one way or another. It was Ixidron after Oblivion Stone after Prophet of Kruphix after Consecrated Sphinx and so on for 3 rounds. The 5th player was running Krenko, Mob Boss who'd been knocked out a few times early and just couldn't do anything for awhile, his only play for the longest time was Mind's Eye and he just sat there drawing while the rest of us committed everything we had to taking out the Threat Du Jour, and when we were all spent he stole the game away, killing everyone in 2 turns. Good times.
