Quick Mistform Ultimus question.

Commander (EDH) forum

So in doing my research I've noticed a lot of mistform decks run Springjack Pastures. Is it really worth it? One mana and 1 life as trade off for sacking your general? Or am I totally missing something?

Springjack Pasture is just a good land in it's own right. Sure you can sac your commander (which can actually be relevant at times) but the ability for a land to both tap for mana and produce creatures (which you can then also sac for mana) is extremely powerful. Especially if you have a low creature count, being able to produce chump blockers at instant speed is awesome.

I like Springjack Pasture and I see the potential, but to make a goat cost 4 mana. Rarely is spending 4 mana on an 0/1 goat better than casting a spell from my hand and I found that the only time I could afford to take the time off to make a goat was when I had nothing in my hand. In which case they were nothing more than chump blockers (assuming I was lucky my opponent had no flying) because I didn't need the ramp if I was top decking late in the game.

Like I said, I understand the appeal especially in a blue deck where ramp is limited, but personally I never found it worth it to take a turn off just to make a goat. Maybe because blue tends to be more controlly, they're leaving mana open more often so they can be reactive with counterspells. In that case it may be easier because they can just make a goat whenever they don't have to respond to their opponents since they are leaving the mana up regardless. Other than that though, there are better options for utility lands in basically every archetype imaginable.

I am playing Mistform Ultimus as a commander myself (Mistform Ultimus - Smashing Faces EDH) and I don't use Springjack Pasture in my deck. I can understand that the card can be good sometimes, like when you have a Coat of Arms and use the goats to grow your Mistform Ultimus +1/+1 for every goat you make with it. Or, as has been already said, if your deck is very light on creatures and you want to have chump blockers available. But I don't think a Mistform Ultimus EDH deck desperately needs the card to be good.

If your question does not necessitate looking at a particular deck in question then it may safely be placed in a format forum rather than deck help. For example, questions about the value of a generic interaction do not require reference to your own deck and therefore may be placed in other places besides deck help.
