Recommending a general

Commander (EDH) forum

After months of brewing, scraping an hair pulling I finally figured out what to play. A Mono-Black Aristocrat deck. I'm just one tiny step away from starting to brew my deck, picking my commander.

I'm hesitating a lot between Syr Konrad, the Grim who's just awesome and also he's enabling some combos in the deck and K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth with his ability to "reduce" the cost of cards to get my stuff out quickly.

Which one should I use as my general? Yes the loser is still getting in the deck as one of the 99.

don't play mono black. it will make it too hard to use artifact removal, which every commander deck needs. every deck plays artifacts. mono color in commander is a huge no-no, except maybe blue since counterspells can answer just about anything.

I have found Yahenni, Undying Partisan to be very fun as an aristocrats commander. Free sac outlet from the command zone is an excellent thing to have available. As far as the two you are currently looking at go, my suggestion would be syr konrad. He is a stupid good mana sink and just outright wins the game with infinite black mana. Not that krrik isn't good by any means, but konrad is my preference

Sarkhan421X mono color is not a no-no, only mono white. There are very competitive decks in each other color that can win just fine.

Konrad has a ton of potential to close out games! He's my recommendation. I like monocolored EDH decks myself, you save so much on the manabase.

I personally am impartial to Ayara, First of Locthwain for a mono black commander. But honestly if you're planning on running aristocrats you probably want Syr KonRAD

Konrad is better as a commander for aristocrats than Krrick. If built correctly Konrad can be the BEST aristocrat commander because he can double up the damage, but Ayara, First of Locthwain is also pretty legit.

I'd go with Syria conrad between the two of them. But if I can make a suggestion Yawgmoth, Thran Physician seems like hed be a great option to be at the helm. He has a free sac ability and removal

I'll second shadow63 papa Yawg is the best mono black Aristocrats general and has a high ceiling for high powered play with upgrades.

It's okay to play mono black in EDH. It has been proven by my Yawgmoth deck. Artifacts are a major part in the format, yes, but as long as yopu stick to your gameplan, artifacts do not become that big of an issue. Yawgmoth, Thran Physician offers you the ability to put -1/-1 counter on your opponents' creatures, AND you can even proliferate the counters with him. He is insane! It's also kind of a tool box deck, so you can tutor for all your pieces.

Mono-colored does have its pros and cons like everything else. On one hand, they require far less fuss over the mana base, as fixing becomes almost irrelevant, and they can be relatively more focused. The downside, as others mentioned already, is that certain things can really only be done efficiently by other colors. Black's removal focuses primarily on creatures, for instance, and while it can get pretty decent advantage and ramp it's designed so that you must be willing to pay a price for it. There are ways to remove things like artifacts by using other artifacts, though many are either very mana-intensive or may hit you as well. One of the more cost-effective methods would be Sword of Sinew and Steel , though in mono-black this means you'll have a harder time if you need to target the equipped creature with a black spell/ability due to the protection. There's also Argentum Armor and Spine of Ish Sah , but they can take a lot to cast. Nevinyrral's Disk will take care of all creatures, artifacts, and enchantments once you crack it, but this also includes your own. Since you want to do an aristocrats deck, even this might give you some value however.

As for commanders, Syr Konrad is probably better suited for the aristocrats style, since you get repeated value every time something goes to the grave. He is, however, rather expensive to cast. I also think Ayara, First of Locthwain has some potential. While she may not be as powerful as Konrad, she is also only a three-drop, making her much easier to bring to the field quickly. Either way, they make for pretty solid commanders in their own ways. K'rrik is potentially very powerful still, but I also don't think he would be ideal if you're set on the aristocrats style. Even so, he would be a great support in the 99. Good luck, and have fun!
