I don't understand how Rienne, Angel of Rebirth interacts with the mutate mechanic. If you mutate onto a multicolored creature does the entire stack return to your hand at the end step or only the Base creature?

Nothing died, nothing comes back.

Unless, of course, it dies later. Whichever was on top(you can sort of choose) is the one who determines colors and such. So if the current top creature is multicolored, then I presume the whole stack would return to your hand as they are all one creature. But then again, I'm not reading the 20 page Mutate rules PDF anytime soon.

According to online sources and a brief look at rules only the top card determines color, so if it is multicolored you return the creature (being the whole stack) to your hand.

Awesome, thank you both so much. I tried to look it up myself, but I couldn't find anything on the ruling. If that works, then I think this is going to be a cool deck.

So the trick here is that Mutate is very easy to understand when there's only one zone change - all the cards go to the same place, so when the creature dies, all cards go to the graveyard. However, Rienne adds a second zone change, which happens after the cards are no longer a merged creature, and are instead just a bunch of cards in the yard.

Fortunately, there's another similar mechanic that the mutate rules talk specifically about - blinking. If a mutated stack is exiled, then brought back, by an effect, the creature is exiled and the cards separate in the exile zone - then ALL the cards are returned to the battlefield, now separated. That makes me think that the same logic will apply here - the creature dies, the cards go to grave, then Rienne brings back all of those cards to hand.

Oh jeez.... so by that logic, in the MtG universe, winking at a giant godzilla being makes it turn into a bunch of tinier things from shame.
